The following study reports the findings of two surveys given to graduate teacher consultants (n=30) and graduate student teachers (n=59) who completed Video-Teacher Consultations at the University of XXX. The surveys assessed the overall effectiveness of the process for both sides and identified the factors that influenced those assessments. We found that the level of comfort expressed by consultants and graduate teachers during their first consultations had the greatest impact on their perceived level of effectiveness. The time between consultants' training and their first consultation also affected their assessments. Other factors that did and did not influence the consultation are also discussed, along with recommendations and best practices learned from our surveys.

This mixed-form essay examines the graduate student teacher (GST) by utilizing Augusto Boal’s concept of the spect-actor. This theatre concept is used to illuminate two distinct aspects of the graduate student-teachers’ persona: first their initiation into theoretical literacy, and second, their opportunity for vigorous critical, even revolutionary activism.  An embedded graduate student essay explores the author’s personal GST experience within a larger frame of current U.S. university employment trends and against the author’s current university experiences and performances.  This work asks: What kinds of power do GSTs command? What kinds of power are they bound by, in their simultaneous, hybrid performance of students and teachers? And, in light of the growing numbers of part-time and temporary faculty teaching at U.S. institutions, what are the ramifications of a shrinking minority of university faculty (the tenured) wielding primacy in institutional policy making and the creation and maintenance of the social and workplace culture?  The essay concludes by exploring these issues at the author’s institution, the University of Guam.

As a graduate student at the University of Chicago in the mid-1950s, Edwin McClellan (1925–2009) translated into English the most famous novel of modern Japan, Kokoro (1914), by Natsume Sōseki. This essay tells the story of how the translation emerged from and appealed to a nascent neoliberal movement that was led by Friedrich Hayek (1899–1992), the Austrian economist who had been McClellan’s dissertation advisor.

To assess the progressive teaching practicums included in an English Teaching Programme at a Chilean university, 60 former student-teachers answered a questionnaire with both Likert-scale and open-ended questions. The issues assessed included the relationship between the progressive teaching practicums and the curriculum’s modules and sequence, and the skills developed while implementing innovation projects during the student-teachers’ two final practicums. Quantitative and qualitative data analyses allowed us to identify both strengths and weaknesses. The participants highlighted strengths in the areas of teaching strategies, critical thinking skills and professional and pedagogical knowledge. Among the weaknesses, they identified limited supervision and feedback, and diverging views on teaching education between the university and the schools as the most difficult to deal with. These findings may be useful for introducing improvements in Initial Teacher Education aimed at reducing problems and discrepancies and devising suitable induction processes.

The aim of the present study was to examine the impact of microteaching on professional competence among four pre-service student teachers enrolled in the program of special education for students of learning disabilities in the Faculty of Education. The researchers indicated the theoretical conceptions of professional competencies, pre-service training, practicum in learning disabilities, and microteaching. The study conducted through three stages: baseline, intervention, and follow up. The researchers used a checklist as the tool of the study. The study was conducted during the field training of the subjects as they were asked to prepare and carry out the entire individual teaching lesson in the resource rooms affiliated to the public education schools. Microteaching sessions were also administrated at the university campus in Najran. The results of the study indicated significant improvements in the professional competencies among the four pre- service students as it was moderate at baseline (68%) for the four participating pre-service students. The subjects maintained the targeted skills in one measurement and after two weeks of the study (89%) indicating the significance of the microteaching in developing pre- service teachers required skills.

The authors of this paper are two teacher researchers, one situated at the university and one situated as principal of an elementary school. Through narrative inquiry (Clandinin and Connelly, 2000) two main themes of belonging and becoming were illuminated. The work suggests trusting relationships evolving from dialogue sustained over two field placements at the same school offer student teachers the possibilities of connecting their life experiences with their new experiences at the school; a connected knowing that enables them to develop their identifies as beginning teachers.

This study is framed in the context of the pre-service masters degrees in the teaching of languages (Spanish as a foreign language + Portuguese as a mother tongue, and Spanish + English as foreign languages) given at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto. This training is preparation for the teaching of languages in lower and upper secondary education in Portugal.During the second year of these masters degrees, trainees conduct a teaching practicum in secondary schools and prepare a reflective portfolio related to this experience. One of the sections of this document is based on the descriptors of the European Portfolio for Student Teachers of Languages (EPOSTL).In this study, seventy-five trainee portfolios were collected from 2014 to 2019 and the written reflections related to the EPOSTL descriptors associated with “Culture” were selected for analysis. The objective was to analyse trainees’ concerns, interests and perceptions about culture and its didactics in Spanish classroom, and in light of this, consider how to improve the training offered.

Drilling through hard rock to explore for underground oil and gas is especially complicated in geographic areas where the sub-layer is full of dense and impenetrable rock. Charlie Scent, an Engineering Professor working at a university, undertook research to solve this dilemma and developed a solution after approximately 20 years of effort. To commercialize the technology, Scent collaborated with one of his PhD students and formed a company. Through the commercialization process, friction developed among the participants—Scent, the graduate student, and the university. This discord brought to light several important questions regarding intellectual property that is created in a university setting. This case is about who owns intellectual property and decreasing the probability that there will be friction between the individuals who are at the heart of an invention.
