Four different corn oil samples including stripped (SCO, Control), refined (RCO), stripped corn oil enriched with rosemary extract (SCO+ROS) and ascorbyl palmitate (SCO+AP) were exposed to microwave (MWH) and conventional heating (CVH). For both heating methods, peroxide value (PV) and conjugated dienes increased at up to 230 °C, at which temperature hexanal (HEX) and conjugated trienes started to increase instead. Kinetic analysis revealed that PV and HEX formation were first ordered and the reaction rate among the samples was as follows: Control > SCO+ROS > RCO > SCO + AP for PV and SCO + ROS > RCO > SCO+AP > Control for HEX. The unsaturated fatty acid contents of CVH and MWH treated samples showed 9.5 and 12.9% reduction in SCO, while they were 2.9 and 7.7% in RCO, 3.6 and 6.1% in SCO + ROS, and finally 4.0 and 4.8% in SCO + AP. It was concluded that MWH led to a more severe deterioration and that the antioxidant activity of ROS was superior to that of AP for both heating methods.

The present study was aimed to analyze the antioxidant activity of spinach (Spinacia oleracea) extract in oxidative stabilization of refined, bleached and de-odorized (RBD) corn oil (CO). Corn oil was supplemented with three different concentrations 600, 1200 and 1800 ppm of methanolic spinach extract and then stored at 25oC and 60oC. Different oxidation measuring parameters such as peroxide value (PV), free fatty acid (FFA) value, iodine value (IV), conjugated dienes (CD), conjugated trienes (CT) and para-anisidine value (PAV) were examined. The potency of spinach extract as natural antioxidant was found to be as effective as the synthetic antioxidants BHA and BHT used as standards and highest stabilization was observed in the order CO-1800>CO-1200>CO-BHT> CO-BHA>CO-600>CO-control. The oxidation stability of extra virgin and refined olive oils produced in different countries were studied under different conditions of microwave heating (microwave oven Electrolux, 2450 MHz, 500 W) and conventional heating (200°C). Oils were heated in a microwave oven and in a conventional oven for 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 20, 25, and 30 minutes. The evaluated parameters were peroxide value, content of conjugated dienes, conjugated trienes (determined by absorbance at 233 nm and 274 nm, respectively), and fatty acid composition by GC. During microwave and conventional heating peroxide values and contents of dienoic compounds differed significantly between control and the heated samples. The microwave treatment did not produce significantly greater amount of oxidation products than traditional heating.

Background: Tetrahydroindazole, a member of the fused-pyrazole system, is a least studied class of heterocyclic compounds owing to its scarcity in nature. However, a large number of synthetically prepared tetrahydroindazoles are known to show a variety of biological activities such as interleukin- 2 inducible T-Cell kinase inhibitors, AMPA receptor positive allosteric modulators, antitumor, antituberculosis, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities. Vilsmeier-Haack reaction is one of the most important chemical reactions used for formylation of electron rich arenes. Even though Vilsmeier- Haack reaction was studied on a wide variety of hydrazones derived from active methylene compounds, literature lacks the examples of the use of 4-substituted cyclohexanones as a substrate for the synthesis of 4,5,6,7-tetrahydroindazoles. The study of the reaction of Vilsmeier-Haack reagent with hydrazones derived from cyclic keto compounds having active methylene has been considered the interested topic of investigation. In the present study, ethyl cyclohexanone-4-carboxylate was treated with one equivalent of various hydrazines for two hours and the resulted hydrazones were further treated with an OPC-VH reagent (Vilsmeier-Haack reagent isolated from phthaloyl dichloride and N,Ndimethylformamide) afforded 4,5,6,7-tetrahydroindazoles in excellent yields. The synthesized compounds 4a-f and 5a-f were screened for their antioxidant activities using the DPPH radical scavenging assay. The target compounds were synthesized regioselectively using 4+1 approach in excellent yields. A number of experiments using both conventional heating as well as microwave irradiation methods were tried and on comparison, microwave irradiation method was found excellent in terms of easy work up, high chemical yields, shortened reaction times, clean and, no by-products formation. Some of the synthesized compounds showed significant antioxidant activity. The microwave assisted synthesis of 4,5,6,7-tetrahydroindazoles from ethyl cyclohexanone-4-carboxylate has been reported under mild conditions in excellent yield. Easy work up, high chemical yield, shortened reaction times, clean and no by-products formation are the major advantages of this protocol. These advantages may make this method useful for chemists who are interested in developing novel 4,5,6,7-tetrahydroindazole based drugs.

Current paper reveals the impact of thermal treatment on the quality of two seed oils – pumpkin and melon compared to the quality of the most used oil – sunflower oil. Conventional and microwave heating were used for processing the oils. The duration of the thermal treatment was 9, 12 and 18 min for the conventional heating. The microwave heating was performed with two microwave powers of the equipment (600 W and 900 W) for 3, 6, 9 and 12 min. At every stage of the thermal processing were determined acid and peroxide value, the absorbance of the oils at 232 and 268 nm, tocopherol and fatty acid composition. It was observed that the degree of oxidation of the examined oils during microwave and conventional heating increased with the duration of the thermal process and the power of the microwaves. Also, the two methods of heating had a little impact on the processes leading to the formation of free fatty acids. Total tocopherols of the melon seed oil were more stable to thermal treatment. The amount of linoleic acid decreased in the pumpkin and sunflower oils during microwave treatment, while that of oleic and palmitic acid relatively increased. The biggest change in the fatty acid composition of both oils was found during microwave heating at 900W. The changes in fatty acid composition of thermally treated melon seed oil were insignificant. Overall, melon seed oil was observed to be more thermally stable than pumpkin and sunflower oils.

The specific activities of acetyl-CoA carboxylase and fatty acid synthetase were measured in the cytosol fraction of livers from chicks fed various levels of corn oil, cottonseed oil, corn-oil free fatty acids, or crude (79%) oleic acid. Activities of both enzymes were depressed by the addition of fat to a fat-free basal diet. The ratios of synthetase to carboxylase activity were greater than unity when up to 4% fat was fed, but less than unity when 8% or higher levels of fat were fed. The depressions of the activities of these enzymes appeared to be unrelated to the dietary level of linoleate. In in vitro experiments, 2 μM concentrations of palmityl-CoA or oleoyl-CoA depressed acetyl-CoA carboxylase activity. Concentrations of 20 μM of these acyl-CoA esters did not affect the activity of fatty acid synthetase.

Four treatments were used in this experiment; first, <em>Daphnia</em> sp. without encrichment, second <em>Daphnia</em> sp. enriched with fish oil, third <em>Daphnia</em> sp. enriched with corn oil and the fourth <em>Daphnia</em> sp. enriched with coconut oil. Three days old larvae fed on <em>Daphnia</em> sp. with size of </span><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Symbol;" lang="in" xml:lang="in"><span>£</span></span><span style="font-size: 11pt;" lang="in" xml:lang="in"> 0,5 mm at the first week and 0,6 – 1,0 mm as the second week of this experiment. Larvae fed on <em>Daphnia</em> sp. 5 times daily, <em>ad libitum</em>, for 14 days. Larvae was reared in the small cages (2,25 l), and all cages was placed in the aquarium. Larvae density was 48 larvae/l. This experiment showed that the lipid level in <em>Daphnia</em> sp. enriched with oil was higher than that of no enrichment <em>Daphnia</em> sp. The highest n3- fatty acid level was found in <em>Daphnia</em> sp. enriched with fish oil, and the highest n6- fatty acid level was found in <em>Daphnia</em> sp. enriched with corn oil. Larvae fed on <em>Daphnia</em> sp. enriched with oil have a higher relative growth rate than that fed on <em>Daphnia</em> sp. without enrichment. Larva ikan nila, <em>Oreochromis niloticus </em>berumur 3 hari ditebar dalam hapa kecil (volume 2,25 l) sebanyak 48 ekor/l, dan seluruh hapa diletakkan dalam akuarium berukuran 100x50x40 cm. <em>Daphnia</em> sp. diperkaya terlebih dahulu dengan minyak sesuai perlakuan sebelum diberikan ke larva. Pada minggu pertama pemeliharaan larva, ukuran <em>Daphnia</em> sp. yang digunakan adalah </span><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Symbol;" lang="in" xml:lang="in"><span>£</span></span><span style="font-size: 11pt;" lang="in" xml:lang="in"> 0,5 mm dan pada minggu ke dua 0.6 – 1.0 mm. <em>Daphnia</em> sp. diberikan sebanyak 5 kali dalam sehari secara <em>ad libitum</em> dan pemberian pakan dilakukan selama 14 hari. Hasil penelitian ini memperlihatkan bahwa kadar lemak <em>Daphnia</em> sp. yang diperkaya minyak lebih tinggi dari <em>Daphnia</em> sp. yang tidak diperkaya, dan hal ini berpengaruh pula pada kadar lemak tubuh larva. Kadar asam lemak –n3 tertinggi terdapat pada <em>Daphnia</em> sp. yang diperkaya minyak ikan dan kadar asam lemak –n6 tertinggi terdapat pada <em>Daphnia</em> sp. yang diperkaya minyak jagung. Larva yang diberi <em>Daphnia</em> sp. yang diperkaya dengan minyak mempunyai pertambahan bobot relatif dan tingkat kelangsungan hidup yang lebih tinggi dari larva yang diberi <em>Daphnia</em> sp. yang tidak diperkaya; dan tingkat kelangsungan hidup larva yang tertinggi dihasilkan oleh perlakuan pemberian <em>Daphnia</em> sp. yang diperkaya minyak jagung (P &lt; 0,05), walaupun pertumbuhan bobot relatifnya sama dengan perlakuan lainnya (<em>p</em> &gt; 0,05).</span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 11pt;" lang="in" xml:lang="in">Kata kunci : <em>Daphnia</em> sp., pengkayaan, larva, <em>Oreochromis niloticus</em></span></p>
