Creative responses to the DC Comics character Harley Quinn, sometime girlfriend and assistant to the Joker and established favorite among female fans, are considered. By means of examples from an array of media (fan fiction, short film, and comics), I observe how the character's trait of submissiveness is read and (re)constructed. First acknowledging the antifeminist possibilities of the submissive female and masochism's portrayal within medical and psychoanalytic discourses, I then move on to explore the ways in which fans use the Harley character to overcome these negative stereotypes of sexual submission. I show that fan works exhibit evidence of familiarity with concepts of the Jungian shadow self and with real-life BDSM practices and philosophies. The central thesis is that we can understand the masochist as potentially Machiavellian—that is, creative and manipulative. Fan fiction echoes postmodernism's concern with ambiguous subjectivity and employs strategies that shift the responsibility for character construction from creator to reader.

Background/Objectives: The Virtual Reality realistic image content is a technology to enable building imaginary space by synthesizing both real and graphic images so as to provide the sensation of immersion without the distinction between real and virtual world. In addition, this is a realm with strong growth potential requiring the raise of technological maturity in the medium to longer term.Methods/Statistical analysis: This research is an attempt to study the time and structure to acquire multi-view components beyond the degree of simple technological experience of delivering the already constructed information unilaterally. In addition, the direction to selectively solve the key problems in VR image grammar is explored by considering the pipeline of production technology including time control, etc.Findings: In this study, we have examined the necessary element for production such as the actor’s movement, lighting, space set for postproduction stitching and issues that arise in direction by actually producing the VR 360 image in real life. We realized that in the view point of VR 360 image, more than the camera angles, the mise-en-scene and space coordination according to the actor’s movement is more important.Improvements/Applications: VR visual grammar’s liberal point of view has the potential to become a specialized genre where it can extend as a new genre by breaking free from the square frame and specialized format

Purpose: At present, transformative learning is one of the most important issues in medical education, since a conventional learning environment is prone to failure due to changing patterns among students. Ethnographic edutainment is a concept that consists of reward, competition, and motivation strategies that be used to effectively engage with learners. Methods: A total 321 first-year medical students took part in ethnographic edutainment sessions in 2011. We defined four preset learning objectives and assigned a term group project using clouding technologies. Participatory evaluation was conducted to assess the delivery of and attitudes towards this method. Results: Career lifestyles in the general population and expected real-life utilization of the final product were used as motivating factors, with competition and rewards provided through a short film contest. Nineteen out of twenty groups (95%) achieved all learning objectives. Females were more satisfied with this activity than males (P<0.001). We found statistically significant differences between lecture-based sessions and field visit sessions, as well as ethnographic edutainment activity sessions and other instructional approaches (P<0.01). The results were consistent in male and female groups. Conclusion: Ethnographic edutainment is well accepted, with higher satisfaction rates than other types of teaching. The concepts of health promotion and the social determinants of health can be learned through ethnographic edutainment activities, which might help train more humanized health professionals.

In this article, I examine how my visibly pregnant body influenced my experience as a field researcher at a fan convention, interviewing amateur fan fiction authors who write Harry Potter male-pregnancy fan fiction. Despite my efforts at carefully cultivating an identity as an acafan (a researcher who identifies as both a fan and a scholar of fandom), my identity as a pregnant woman was most salient throughout my fieldwork. I argue that because of the particular genre of fan fiction, male pregnancy (mpreg), which my participants engaged with, my status as a normative, heterosexual, publicly pregnant woman negatively affected the research process: my interactions with my interviewees deviated from my expectations in ways that shaped the data I collected. When I analyzed my field notes, I found a strong correlation between interviewees' recognition of my pregnancy and interviewees' experience of stigma associated with authors of mpreg. This research contributes to several bodies of work: the interplay between online and real-life identities, the role of the researcher in field research, and the role of pregnant researchers.

ABROAD is a short film, which tells a story of an Indonesian student, Priyo (23) who lived in Brisbane. He had to live in his yellow car, after finding out that his scholarship had been corrupted. Priyo began his new journey when he met Pamela (17), a runaway musician who was stuck in Brisbane for a night during her trip to Sydney. Their friendship grows stronger when they played music and performed together at Brisbane streets. Unfortunately, Priyo’s car was vandalized due to his religion. Later on, their friendship was tested as they explore the city for the first time. The film explores the journey to find the meanings of passion, dream, and faith. Depicted by the main character who is an Indonesian student, the film attempts to share the experience of students who chose to travel outside their home country, in search of better education for better life. Although most part of the story is fiction, the main character (Priyo) is inspired by the real life experience of an Indonesia student in Canberra. He lived in his car for two year while trying to complete his master degree. Dramas that were presented in the storyline were based on the writer’s observation toward his surroundings, friends, and communities. Living and studying in another country could bring great experiences to international students, but at the same time, living through differences in values and beliefs could be a challenging task. The meaning of ‘abroad’ is not just about people who live outside their home country. But, it could also depict people’s experience when they try to get out of their comfort zone in order to achieve a higher goal in their life. Based on these reasons, the main targeted audiences of the film are people from the age of 25 and above. Additionally, the film also attempts to target local audiences, especially parents, as a bridge between parents and children. Hopefully it could prevent the rising number of runaway’s children. The outline of the production begins with the script development, which will be completed by the end of November. As soon as the final script is done, the production will proceed with the pre-production from December until early January. This process includes assembling the crew, finding cast, art design, and composing music. The crew will consist of GFS students for the production crew and some Indonesian students who voluntarily want to help in funding and marketing. There are some challenges in this project. Firstly, the project has to combine two different cultures between Indonesia and Australia through out the process. However, having an Australian as the director and an Indonesian as the producer can solve these. The other problem is related to the sensitive issue around religion, especially Islam. Recently, the religion feels being judged in Australia because of the action of ISIS (Islamic State in Iraq and Syria) and ISIL (Islamic State in Iraq and Levant). This paper is the result of a three-month monitoring of Serbian television commercials which aimed to study the way elderly people are represented in the media. Elderly people appear in only six commercials, more often as a functional part of a series than as protagonists. Yet in spite of the small number of commercials in which they appear, it is easy to identify the stereotypes which are translated from a social paradigm into the sphere of the media. The stereotypes on which commercials are based belong for the most part to the corpus of negative stereotypes of elderly people as hopelessly behind the times, feeble, lonely, irritating, cantankerous, etc. Some positive stereotypes are also evident, but they are mostly limited to a perception of elderly people as kindly givers of useful advice. It is interesting to note that the "cantankerous people next door" are as a rule anonymous elderly people, as are those "lost in time and space", who are mostly elderly women. In contrast, those who let their careers and images be associated with a certain product, in order to pass on their great experience and knowledge, are as a rule famous persons. Just as it is possible to make a distinction between commercials depending on whether or not the products advertised are targeted at the elderly – which they rarely are – and whether elderly people appear in leading or supporting roles, in order to make viewers laugh or annoy them, so it is possible to distinguish between the "real-life principle", which involves the translation of the society’s dominant attitudes into commercials, and "commercial reality", which either makes old age invisible or "masks" it so that it is pleasant to the eye. The reason that old people are absent from television commercials or are mostly represented in a negative light is to be found in the low purchasing power of this age group, but also in the fact that advertising in Serbia developed practically overnight, and therefore has not always been able to follow foreign advertising trends, which treat the elderly as a worthy target audience for commercials.

Fan fiction can be a way to explore emotional fallout after events in canon. It is not a stretch to use fan fiction to process real-life events. This small collection of observations is of some changes I have seen in the few fandoms I belong to in the wake of a few events in the early months of the Trump administration. The work fandom is doing has become a necessary part of how some people process these moments.

Microbial communities drive diverse processes that impact nearly everything on this planet, from global biogeochemical cycles to human health. Harnessing the power of these microorganisms could provide solutions to many of the challenges that face society. However, naturally occurring microbial communities are not optimized for anthropogenic use. An emerging area of research is focusing on engineering synthetic microbial communities to carry out predefined functions. Microbial community engineers are applying design principles like top-down and bottom-up approaches to create synthetic microbial communities having a myriad of real-life applications in health care, disease prevention, and environmental remediation. Multiple genetic engineering tools and delivery approaches can be used to ‘knock-in' new gene functions into microbial communities. A systematic study of the microbial interactions, community assembling principles, and engineering tools are necessary for us to understand the microbial community and to better utilize them. Continued analysis and effort are required to further the current and potential applications of synthetic microbial communities.

Abstract The speech-language pathologist (SLP) working in the public schools has a wide variety of tasks. Educational preparation is not all that is needed to be an effective school-based SLP. As a SLP currently working in the capacity of a program coordinator, the author describes the skills required to fulfill the job requirements and responsibilities of the SLP in the school setting and advises the new graduate regarding the interview process and beginning a career in the public schools.
