Utility of Flying Shapes In The Development of offwind Sail Design Databases

Abstract Versioning has been one of the important requirements for engineering design databases and is of increasing interest to database system designers. While there exist many object-oriented DBMS’s that support various versioning facilities, these systems consider the versioning problems as two separate domains: object versioning and schema versioning. In this paper, we consider both domains together and propose a unifying version model for both objects and schema. In particular, we present how we unify version controls for schema and objects, and describe issues in implementation.

As with briefs, one can also make databases that collect and organize information on designs – one’s own, precedents one studies, or types one explores. In addition to the general benefits for information and project management, such databases can help one with the development of a brief by providing precedents that can serve either as sources of new designs or as comparison material at all stages of briefing. In this chapter one sees how design databases can be structured and how they can be used in briefing, from the derivation of data for a new brief to the evaluation of designs with respect to the brief.

The Impact

Engineering infrastructures require regular maintenance and/or repair activities that have important social, environmental, and economic impacts. Despite their growing importance, few studies have focused on fully integrated analyses. This work presents a general methodological approach to design databases of engineering maintenance activities for their assessment. This methodology was applied to the case of dredging projects in the ports managed by the Andalusian Regional Government (Spain). The resulting database contains 87 fields of information obtained from the analysis of 70 activities performed between 1993 and 2015. This database is free, public, and available to the scientific community, and it was implemented in PostgreSQL using the PostGIS extension for spatial data; therefore, it can be integrated in a GIS. The assessment of deviations from the initial projects and the comparison between locations enhanced our methodology, which represents a valuable tool not only for scientists and managers to improve the decision-making process when planning future strategies, but also to evaluate the environmental impacts.
