Abstract The theory of boundary regularity for p-harmonic functions is extended to unbounded open sets in complete metric spaces with a doubling measure supporting a p-Poincaré inequality, 1 < p < ∞. The barrier classification of regular boundary points is established, and it is shown that regularity is a local property of the boundary. We also obtain boundary regularity results for solutions of the obstacle problem on open sets, and characterize regularity further in several other ways.

An optimal rearrangement problem in a cylindrical domainΩ=D× (0, 1) is considered, under the constraint that the force function does not depend on thexnvariable of the cylindrical axis. This leads to a new type of obstacle problem in the cylindrical domain     Δu(x′,xn) =χ{v>0}(x′) +χ{v=0}(x′) [∂νu(x′,0) +∂νu(x′, 1)]arising from minimization of the functional     ∫Ω½;|∇u(x)|2+χ{v>0}(x′)u(x) dx,wherev(x′) =∫01u(x′,t)dt, and∂νuis the exterior normal derivative ofuat the boundary. Several existence and regularity results are proven and it is shown that the comparison principle does not hold for minimizers.

We review the finite-element approximation of the classical obstacle problem in energy and max-norms and derive error estimates for both the solution and the free boundary. On the basis of recent regularity results, we present an optimal error analysis for the thin obstacle problem. Finally, we discuss the localization of the obstacle problem for the fractional Laplacian and prove quasi-optimal convergence rates.

We obtain regularity results in weighted Sobolev spaces for the solution of the obstacle problem for the integral fractional Laplacian [Formula: see text] in a Lipschitz bounded domain [Formula: see text] satisfying the exterior ball condition. The weight is a power of the distance to the boundary [Formula: see text] of [Formula: see text] that accounts for the singular boundary behavior of the solution for any [Formula: see text]. These bounds then serve us as a guide in the design and analysis of a finite element scheme over graded meshes for any dimension [Formula: see text], which is optimal for [Formula: see text].

Abstract In this paper we study a class of one-parameter family of elliptic equations which combines local and nonlocal operators, namely the Laplacian and the fractional Laplacian. We analyze spectral properties, establish the validity of the maximum principle, prove existence, nonexistence, symmetry and regularity results for weak solutions. The asymptotic behavior of weak solutions as the coupling parameter vanishes (which turns the problem into a purely nonlocal one) or goes to infinity (reducing the problem to the classical semilinear Laplace equation) is also investigated.

AbstractIn the recent paper “Well-posedness and regularity for a generalized fractional Cahn–Hilliard system” (Colli et al. in Atti Accad Naz Lincei Rend Lincei Mat Appl 30:437–478, 2019), the same authors have studied viscous and nonviscous Cahn–Hilliard systems of two operator equations in which nonlinearities of double-well type, like regular or logarithmic potentials, as well as nonsmooth potentials with indicator functions, were admitted. The operators appearing in the system equations are fractional powers $$A^{2r}$$ A 2 r and $$B^{2\sigma }$$ B 2 σ (in the spectral sense) of general linear operators A and B, which are densely defined, unbounded, selfadjoint, and monotone in the Hilbert space $$L^2(\Omega )$$ L 2 ( Ω ) , for some bounded and smooth domain $$\Omega \subset {{\mathbb {R}}}^3$$ Ω ⊂ R 3 , and have compact resolvents. Existence, uniqueness, and regularity results have been proved in the quoted paper. Here, in the case of the viscous system, we analyze the asymptotic behavior of the solution as the parameter $$\sigma $$ σ appearing in the operator $$B^{2\sigma }$$ B 2 σ decreasingly tends to zero. We prove convergence to a phase relaxation problem at the limit, and we also investigate this limiting problem, in which an additional term containing the projection of the phase variable on the kernel of B appears.

AbstractWe establish new local regularity results for the harmonic map and Yang–Mills heat flows on Riemannian manifolds of dimension greater than 2 and 4, respectively, obtaining criteria for the smooth local extensibility of these flows. As a corollary, we obtain new characterisations of singularity formation and use this to obtain a local estimate on the Hausdorff measure of the singular sets of these flows at the first singular time. Finally, we show that smooth blow-ups at rapidly forming singularities of these flows are necessarily nontrivial and admit a positive lower bound on their heat ball energies. These results crucially depend on some local monotonicity formulæ for these flows recently established by Ecker (Calc Var Partial Differ Equ 23(1):67–81, 2005) and the Afuni (Calc Var 555(1):1–14, 2016; Adv Calc Var 12(2):135–156, 2019).
