The students' lack of motivation is a usual problem. The students value more the obtention of the degree than the developing of competences and skills. In order to fight this, we developed a gamification's experience based on merits and leaderboards. The merits are linked to the attainment of skills and competences that students usually do not appreciate. During the year 2016, we are carrying out a pilot involving 950 students at the Graduate of Engineering in Computer Science at theAutonomous University of Barcelona (UAB).

This paper takes the application of workflow technology in a multi-smart IOT message-driven practical training execution system as the research background, analyzes the current situation and problems of the practical training execution system, and reconstructs and optimizes the original on-site practical training model and business methods according to the future development needs of the practical training execution system. This study draws on the theoretical perspective of the computer knowledge body to deeply recognize and understand the connotation of computing ability from the levels of knowledge, skills, and attitude, forms a basic understanding of computing ability through literature combing, and refines the core elements of computing ability through a combination of enterprise case study, content analysis, and questionnaire survey, strives to form a more systematic and in-depth understanding of the connotation and elements of computing ability. It also provides a reference for the clarification of computing ability training objectives of computer science teachers under the trend of intelligence. Facing the enhancement of computing ability of engineering students majoring in computer science at the undergraduate level, the objectives of computing ability cultivation are clarified, the key points of computing ability cultivation mode are refined from three levels: curriculum design, teaching operation, management, and control, and three typical computing ability cultivation modes embedded in undergraduate computer education are constructed: knowledge module combination mode, computing context experience mode, and intelligent industry-leading mode. The operational strategies and implementation paths of the models are discussed in depth. This study emphasizes that, based on the analysis of the characteristics of the trend of intelligence, the computing ability cultivation model is not static.

Teaching a statistics course for undergraduate computer science students can be very challenging: As statistics teachers we are usually faced with problems ranging from a complete disinterest in the subject to lack of basic knowledge in mathematics and anxiety for failing the exam, since statistics has the reputation of having high failure rates. In our case, we additionally struggle with difficulties in the timing of the lectures as well as often occurring absence of the students due to spare-time jobs or a long traveling time to the university. This paper reveals how these issues can be addressed by the introduction of a blended learning module in statistics. In the following, we describe an e-learning development process used to implement time- and location-independent learning in statistics. The study focuses on a six-step-approach for developing the blended learning module. In addition, the teaching framework for the blended module is presented, including suggestions for increasing the interest in learning the course. Furthermore, the first experimental in-class usage, including evaluation of the students’ expectations, has been completed and the outcome is discussed.

AbstractThis study investigates the level of familiarity and interest of students towards social robotics through a survey conducted with the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Students at Heriot-Watt University in the UK and Electrical Engineering Students at Xidian University in China. The results indicate that whereas there is no significant difference in the level of familiarity within the three groups of students and no significant difference in the level of interest between the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Students at Heriot Watt University, there is a statistically significant difference in the level of interest towards social robotics between the Heriot-Watt University and Xidian University Students. Xidian University Students demonstrate a higher level of interest towards social robotics. The qualitative analysis shows that many of the Xidian University Students are willing to perceive and have robots as companions whereas none of the Heriot-Watt University Students show such or similar tendency. This observation indicates that cultural background plays a significant role in interests and preferences of the students towards social robotics.

Literature clearly indicates that it is possible to develop quantifiable outcomes, such as critical thinking abilities, measure them and communicate student learning achievement of the outcomes, if the instructional and assessment approaches are organized in an effective way. Critical thinking ability of the Computer Science and Engineering students is an active process of skilfully conceptualizing the domain concept, analyzing and evaluating the information. This paper attempts to measure learning outcomes of ‘critical thinking ability’ which might be obtained by the students of Computer Science and Engineering, through two different instructional perspectives namely, i. the traditional linear time-bound instructions and ii. Outcomes Based instructions. The objective of this exercise is to determine whether Outcomes Based Education (OBE) in its instructional principles would be more suitable over the traditional methods in imbibing ‘Critical thinking ability’ as a learning outcome? Is it possible to classify students who prefer OBE methods of instructions? The paper elaborates an experimental study to compare and correlate the results obtained by these two selected instructional principles. The conclusions drawn out of the experimental studies as well as from the survey results will be of immense use to educational researchers of Computer Science and Engineering.
