The authors of the article have studied the content of the elements of anti-oxidant system (malondialdehyde, catalase, selenium) in tissues of the internal organs (gills, intestine, muscles, liver, swimbladder, scales) in some species of predatory fish (pike Esox lucius (L., 1758), perch Perca fluviatilis (L., 1758), pike-perch Sander lucioperca (L., 1758), catfish Silurus glanis ) widespread in the basin of the Volga river in the Saratov region. The lowest concentration of malondialdehyde in organisms of the studied fish species is observed in fall and winter; the highest - in spring and summer. Catalase activity in gills tissue of a pike raised in 11.8%, cat-fish - 9.1%, pike-perch - 7.5%, perch - 7.8%. In fall (compared to winter) enzyme activity lowering in gonads of pike-perch makes 16.3%, in gonads of perch - 14.4%. In other tissues there were not observed any evident changes of catalase activity. Fish species under consideration are listed according to the average value of selenium concentration in organisms, µg/g: pike (0.208) > catfish (0.207) > pike-perch (0.196) > perch (0.178). According to the average value of the selenium accumulation in the body in different season all the studied species can be placed in the following order, µg/g: winter-pike (0.132) > pike-perch (0.136) > perch and catfish (0.142); spring - pike-perch (0.190) > perch (0.191) > pike (0.208) > catfish (0.209); summer - perch (0.186) > pike-perch (0.190) > catfish and pike (0.203); autumn - perch (0.193) > pike-perch (0.268) > > catfish (0.274) > pike (0.289).

This work aimed at assessing the presence of total aflatoxins (AFs) and aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) in fish farmed in two Cameroonian localities and the possible origin of that contamination through analysis of fish feeds as well as water and mud collected from the fish farming ponds. Four fish species (kanga, tilapia, catfish, and carp) were collected from two fish farming sites (Mfou and Batié). Mud and water from the farming ponds of the different species and the fish feeds used in these sites were also collected. The samples (34) were analyzed for their levels of AFs and AFB1 using the competitive ELISA method. The results obtained showed that all fish tissue contained AFs and AFB1. A level of AFs higher than the threshold value recommended by the FDA (20 ppb) was observed in catfish (31.38±0.29 ppb). AFs and AFB1 were presented in fish feeds as well as in muds collected from the farming ponds. Catfish was the fish species which mostly bioaccumulated aflatoxins in their tissue. This study presents the state of art on the mycotoxin contamination of fish farmed in some Cameroonian localities and suggests that attention should be paid to the quality of ingredients used to feed fish.

The paper deals with a summarized account of ecological characteristics and biological productivity of river Pinder which is well known for its water quality conducive for the most important schizothoracine fishery of Uttarakhand. It was observed that the low water temperature and clarity of water favours good populations of phytobenthos and macrozoobenthos which in their turn supports the population quality of fishes. Overall 32 plankton species, 23 macrozoobenthic and 24 fish species were recorded.

The study was conducted to explore the physicochemical parameters of water, fish diversity andfisheries resources of Korotoa River at Bogura city of Bangladesh during July 2015 to February 2016. Thewater samples were collected from five sampling stations in the Korotoa River during wet and dry seasons.The results of the study showed that temperature, EC, TDS, DO, BOD, alkalinity, acidity and total hardnessof the Karotoa River water were 25.86ºC, 297.41 ?S/cm, 98.86 mg/L, 2.17 mg/L, 2.64 mg/L, 122.05mg/L, 3.28 mg/L and 75.59 mg/L, respectively. The DO and BOD contents of the river water were foundunsuitable for fisheries when compared with the standard of DoE. A total of ten fish species under six ordersand seven families were identified during the study period. The study also revealed that the most remarkablecause of water quality degradation of the river was waste dumping (58%) followed by urbanization and riverbank erosion. The water quality degradation (46%) negatively influenced the abundance of fish species. Theresults concluded that the water quality of the river is not favorable for production of fishes and other aquaticorganisms. The study suggested that the source of water quality degradation should be closely monitoredtogether with the industrial effluent and/or domestic sewage discharge should be reduced or stopped throughthe initiatives of the local government concerned to maintain sound and healthy ecosystem of the river.

Stomach contents of the Antarctic toothfish, Dissostichus mawsoni, collected from subareas 58.4 and 88.3, were analyzed using next generation sequencing (NGS) technology. After processing the raw reads generated by the MiSeq platform, a total of 131,233 contigs (130 operational taxonomic units [OTUs]) were obtained from 163 individuals in subarea 58.4, and 75,961 contigs (105 OTUs) from 164 fish in subarea 88.3. At 98% sequence identity, species names were assigned to most OTUs in this study, indicating the quality of the DNA barcode database for the Antarctic Ocean was sufficient for molecular analysis, especially for fish species. A total of 19 species was identified from the stomach of D. mawsoni in this study, which included 14 fish species and five mollusks. More than 90% of contigs belonged to fish species, supporting the postulate that the major prey of D. mawsoni are fish. Two fish species, Macrourus whitsoni and Chionobathyscus dewitti, were the most important prey items (a finding similar to that of previous studies). We also obtained genotypes of prey items by NGS analysis, identifying an additional 17 representative haplotypes in this study. Comparison with three previous morphological studies and the NGS-based molecular identification in this study extended our knowledge regarding the prey of D. mawsoni, which previously was not possible. These results suggested that NGS-based diet studies are possible, if several current technical limitations, including the quality of the barcode database or the development of precise molecular quantification techniques to link them with morphological values, are overcome. To achieve this, additional studies should be conducted on various marine organisms.

The fish community and physico-chemical properties at five sites of Melamchi River were studied monthly from January 2011 to December 2013.    Melamchi River is one of tributaries larger Indrawati River basin, originates from the high snowy Jugal Mountain (5,875 m asl). Eleven fish species within two orders and five families were recorded.   Cypriniformes  was  found  to  be  the  most  dominant  order  with  ten  fish  species. Schizothorax plagiostomus  was the most common fish species followed by  Neolissochilus hexagonolepis, and  Psilorhynchus pseudecheneis.  Shannon Wiener fish diversity index and species richness recorded were highest at site 2 and lowest at site 5, whereas, evenness index was highest at site 3. The cluster analysis revealed  that  similarity  between  fish  species  decreased  as  the  distance  between  the  sites  increased.  Fish species were found distributed among four groups with respect to the significant habitat characteristics in the redundancy analysis (RDA). River water was found well-oxygenated and alkaline at all sites. However, high level for turbidity (43.25/ NTU) was observed at site 5, which exceeded compliance levels of WHO indicating the influence of intensive agriculture and deforestation along river area. The article discusses the problem of creating objective methods for assessing the quality of fish raw materials. The NMR method is recommended for a comprehensive analysis of the metabolic profile of salmon and cod fish species in order to characterize the qualitative indicators and identify the species composition.
