Bamboo is a widespread plant with medicinal value. During our taxonomic study on medicinal plants, three collections of Distoseptispora were made from China and Thailand. Phylogenetic analyses of combined LSU, ITS and RPB2 sequence data showed that two collections represented a new species, phylogenetically distinct from other described species in Distoseptispora. This new species has macronematous, mononematous conidiophores, polyblastic or monoblastic conidiogenous cells and acrogenous, solitary, straight, obclavate, multi-septate, thick-walled conidia. Distoseptispora bambusae sp. nov. is introduced with illustrations and a comprehensive description. The third collection on dead wood from Thailand was identified as D. tectona with newly-generated molecular data for this taxon.

A new orchid species, Cymbidium atrolabium, from Yunnan Province, China, is described and illustrated based on morphological and molecular analyses. A detailed comparison between the newly discovered orchid and other members of Cymbidium was conducted. The new plant is similar to C. tortisepalum but differs by having a dark-purple inflorescence with smaller flowers, sepals that are pale green-yellow with a dark-purple broad midrib, petals that are dark-purple with pale green-yellow margins and a smaller, dark purple, densely papillose lip. Phylogenetic analyses based on nuclear ribosomal ITS and plastid (matK, rbcL) sequence data support the status of C. atrolabium as a new species.

A new Seifertia species was isolated from hanging rachides of Rhododendron decorum in Yunnan Province, Southwest China. The new taxon was compared with the type species, S. azalea and differs in having wider conidiophores, with hyaline to subhyaline and smaller conidia, while S. azalea has olive-brown to brown, rarely branched conidiophores, and pale brown or olive-brown, very rarely septate conidia. Phylogenetic analyses of combined LSU, SSU and TEF1-α sequence data show that S. shangrilaensis forms a robust clade with S. azalea nested among the species of Melanommataceae in the order Pleosporales. A new species, S. shangrilaensis is introduced in this study, and Seifertia should be placed in Melanommataceae (Pleosporales, Dothideomycetes) based on phylogenetic analysis. Description and illustration of Seifertia shangrilaensis are provided with notes and its introduction is supported by molecular data.

Ophiocordyceps pathogens of ants (Hymenoptera) are considered to have a worldwide distribution. Species of Ophiocordyceps have been relatively poorly studied and there is little molecular data available in GenBank. Thus, fresh collections and sequence data are needed to improve the understanding of species in the genus. In this study, infected ant species were collected in northern Thailand and carefully studied. As a result, O. thanathonensis is introduced as a new species. The morphology of O. thanathonensis differs from related species in the genus in having smaller ascomata, shorter asci, shorter ascospores and curved secondary ascospores. A reference specimen for O. pseudolloydii is also designated with sequence data. Phylogenetic analyses using maximum likelihood and Bayesian combined LSU, SSU, ITS, TEF1α and RPB1 sequence data show the placement of O. thanathonensis (new species) and O. pseudolloydii (reference specimen) within the Ophiocordyceps clade.

A new orchid species, Cymbidium shidianense (Orchidaceae; Cymbidieae), from Yunnan Province, China, is described and illustrated based on morphological and molecular analyses. This new species is similar in morphology to C. cyperifolium, but it differs in its larger pseudobulbs, rigid leaves, broader pale green sepals, petals with darkly coloured veins and set of V-shaped blotches on the lip midlobe. A phylogenetic analyses based on nuclear ribosomal ITS and plastid (matK, rbcL) DNA sequence data support C. shidianense as related to C. cyperifolium.

Historically, the taxonomic study of the Asian genus Fordiophyton has had some gaps. Several specimens from Guangdong (China) have been misidentified as Fordiophyton brevicaule C. Chen. The new species proposed here shares with F. brevicaule the densely hirsute stem, rosetted leaves and glabrous hypanthia, but it is distinguished by its glabrous leaves, winged petioles, oblong petals lacking a single trichome at the apex, and purplish anthers in the longer set of stamens. The phylogenetic analyses indicate that it is a member of Fordiophyton and sister to F. brevicaule. Based on morphological and molecular data, we here recognize it as a new species, Fordiophyton zhuangiae S. Jin Zeng & G. D. Tang, which is described and illustrated.

A new species of the genusLycodonis described from Cao Bang Province, Vietnam, based on three individuals with distinct differences in morphology and molecular data. The new species is differentiated from its congeners by a combination of the following characters: dorsal scales in 17-17-15 rows, smooth throughout; supralabials usually eight (rarely nine); infralabials ten; one elongated loreal on each side, in contact with the eye; precloacal plate single; ventral scales 212–218 (plus one or two preventral scales); subcaudals 90 or 91; maxillary teeth 13 or 14; dorsal surface of body with 28 or 29 light body bands; dorsal surface of tail with 13 cream bands, forming a distinct blotch in the vertebral region. Based on phylogenetic analyses of mitochondrial cytochromebsequence data, the new species is recovered as the sister species to a clade containingL. multizonatusandL. liuchengchaoiwith strong support from the Bayesian analysis. The new species is at least 7.5% divergent from other species within this clade in uncorrected pairwise distance calculated using a fragment of more than 1000 bp of the mitochondrial cytochromeb.This discovery increases the number ofLycodonspecies known from Vietnam to 16.

A new species of Lolia and the sexual morph of L. aquatica are described, with illustrations, from decayed submerged wood in the River Nile, Egypt. Molecular phylogenetic analyses of partial SSU and LSU rDNA sequence data place the sexual morph of L. aquatica and the new species, L. dictyospora in a monophyletic clade, distant from the closely related fungi in the freshwater family Lindgomycetaceae. Pairwise LSU rDNA sequence alignment of the sexual/asexual morphs of L. aquatica are 99% similar. Lolia species are characterized by pseudothecial or stromatic, immersed to erumpent, dark-brown to black, coriaceous to sub-carbonaceous ascomata, cylindric-clavate, bitunicate, fissitunicate, short pedicellate asci, yellow to reddish-brown, phragmo- or dictyospores, surrounded by prominent gelatinous sheath. Lolia species are phylogenetically distant from the closely related genera: Leptosphaeria (Leptosphaeriaceae) and Massariosphaeria (Pleosporales incert. sed.). Lolia differs from Leptosphaeria in having a prominent large gelatinous ascospore sheath, while this is absent in Leptosphaeria species. Lolia differs from Massariosphaeria in having smaller ascospores and fewer transverse septa. Based on molecular data and morphology, a new species, Lolia dictyospora, is established.

The Epicopeiidae is a small geometroid family distributed in the East Palaearctic and Oriental regions. It exhibits high morphological diversity in body size and wing shape, while their wing patterns involve in various complex mimicry rings. In the present study, we attempted to describe a new genus, and a new species from Vietnam, with comments on two assumed congeneric novel species from China and India. To address its phylogenetic affinity, we reconstructed the phylogeny of the family by using sequence data of COI, EF-1α, and 28S gene regions obtained from seven genera of Epicopeiidae with Pseudobiston pinratanai as the outgroup. We also compared the morphology of the new taxon to other epicopeiid genera to affirm its taxonomic status. The results suggest that the undescribed taxon deserve a new genus, namely Mimaporia gen. n. The species from Vietnam, Mimaporia hmong sp. n., is described as new to science. Under different tree building strategies, the new genus is the sister group of either Chatamla Moore, 1881 or Parabraxas Leech, 1897. The morphological evidence, which was not included in phylogenetic analyses, however, suggests its potential affinity with Burmeia Minet, 2003. This study also provides the first, although preliminary, molecular phylogeny of the family on which the revised systematics and interpretation of character evolution can be based.

During the investigation of fungal microbiome associated with boxwood in the Czech Republic, samples from Buxus sempervirens L. (Buxaceae) plants were collected and used for isolation. Two fungal strains were proposed as a new species Pyrenochaetopsis kuksensis based on morphology as well as phylogenetic analyses of ITS, LSU, rpb2, and tub2 sequence data. Detailed descriptions and phylogenetic relationships of the new taxon are provided.
