Schmitt and Schmitt (2014) labeled the first 4000 to 9000 word families as mid-frequency words and stressed their importance based on Nation's (2006) estimate that for adequate comprehension of a variety of authentic texts, knowledge of the first 9000 word families is necessary. Subsequent to this vocabulary goal is to determine what can be read extensively to increase vocabulary progressively since most words cannot be mastered through only one exposure. This research aimed to investigate how much TED talk transcripts input is needed to encounter most of the first 9000 word families for learning to occur. It first measured the vocabulary levels of TED talks for their potential as extensive reading material for mid-frequency word learning. The results show that TED talks reached the 5th to 6th 1000-word-family level at 98% lexical coverage. Corpus sizes of 0.3 to 4.8 million words of TED transcripts provided an average of 12+ repetitions for most of the words from the first 4th to 9th 1000 word families. The figures may serve as a reference for learners in extensive reading programs to decide how much effort they should make to read TED talk transcripts voluminously to reach a certain vocabulary goal.

In second language teaching, materials play a unique role and the demand of developing language-teaching materials has been increasing. The textbook, an integral part of language-teaching materials, to some extent dominates the contents of teaching and learning and has a deep influence on curriculum. Textbooks for extensive reading apparently highlights this feature while some kind of series adopted in universities have several shortcomings in the representativeness of the articles and their variety of the categories, etc. which makes it hard to play an active role and have a positive impact in teaching and learning process. Some teachers ignore the development of this ability and the significant contribution they can make to evaluating and selecting textbooks. Thus, the author collects basic information from one series of textbooks and analyzes it systematically, and then shows overall comments with detailed suggestions on contents as: selecting more articles from representative writers; increasing articles about history and philosophy; selecting more current articles from magazines; adding more poems and attaching more detailed introductions about the authors and reference books to read. These suggestions will provide some implication for extensive reading textbook evaluation and selection, thereby, the selected textbooks can be at the good service for extensive reading teaching and teachers can get a self-development in the process.

Among some components of effective language classroom, learning materials indisputably play a focal role. They improve the quality of language teaching; facilitate teachers in doing their duties, and lead students to a higher level of understanding in learning. This research aims to discuss the notion of materials in language teaching. It made use of works of literature to outline the importance of materials in language teaching, and to analyze kinds of materials, which are relevant to language teaching. The analysis resulted in the classification of materials into two broad categories namely (1) created materials, which include course book, audio materials, and video materials; and (2) authentic materials, which cover authentic texts, movie/film, radio broadcasting, television program, graphs, maps, tables, and charts. This paper serves as an invaluable resource to facilitate language teachers in selecting appropriate materials for effective language teaching.
