Most evolutionary multi-objective algorithms perform poorly in many objective problems. They normally do not make selective pressure towards the Region of Interest (RoI), the privileged zone in the Pareto frontier that contains solutions important to a DM. Several works have proved that a priori incorporation of preferences improves convergence towards the RoI. The work of (E. Fernandez, E. Lopez, F. Lopez & C.A. Coello Coello, 2011) uses a binary fuzzy outranking relational system to map many-objective problems into a tri-objective optimization problem that searches the RoI; however, it requires the elicitation of many preference parameters, a very hard task. The use of an indirect elicitation approach overcomes such situation by allowing the parameter inference from a battery of examples. Even though the relational system of Fernandez et al. (2011) is based on binary relations, it is more convenient to elicit its parameters from assignment examples. In this sense, this paper proposes an evolutionary-based indirect parameter elicitation method that uses preference information embedded in assignment examples, and it offers an analysis of their impact in a priori incorporation of DM’s preferences. Results show, through an extensive computer experiment over random test sets, that the method estimates properly the model parameter’s values.

Project portfolio selection is addressed here as a multi-objective optimization problem. This work introduces an interval-based method that takes into consideration imperfect knowledge of the contribution of projects to a portfolio, the project requirements, available resources and preference parameters in the model. The multi-objective optimization problem is solved using an evolutionary algorithm that is adapted to handle intervals. To direct the search toward the region of interest of the Pareto frontier, the preferences of the decision maker (DM) are incorporated using an interval-based outranking approach. This allows to address problems with many objective functions; intransitive preferences and incomparability situations can also be handled using this approach. In terms of analyzing robustness, the DM can obtain different solutions according to his/her level of conservatism. The effectiveness of this proposal was tested both on an example from the related literature and another example of a public project portfolio with nine objective functions and large number of applicant projects.

This paper presents a practical methodology developed for shape optimization studies of hydraulic structures using environmental numerical modelling codes. The methodology starts by defining the optimization problem and identifying relevant problem constraints. Design variables in shape optimization studies are configuration of structures (such as length or spacing of groins, orientation and layout of breakwaters, etc.) whose optimal orientation is not known a priori. The optimization problem is solved numerically by coupling an optimization algorithm to a numerical model. The coupled system is able to define, test and evaluate a multitude of new shapes, which are internally generated and then simulated using a numerical model. The developed methodology is tested using an example of an optimum design of a fish passage, where the design variables are the length and the position of slots. In this paper an objective function is defined where a target is specified and the numerical optimizer is asked to retrieve the target solution. Such a definition of the objective function is used to validate the developed tool chain. This work uses the numerical model TELEMAC- 2Dfrom the TELEMAC-MASCARET suite of numerical solvers for the solution of shallow water equations, coupled with various numerical optimization algorithms available in the literature.

We consider a decision-making problem to evaluate absolute ratings of alternatives from the results of their pairwise comparisons according to two criteria, subject to constraints on the ratings. We formulate the problem as a bi-objective optimization problem of constrained matrix approximation in the Chebyshev sense in logarithmic scale. The problem is to approximate the pairwise comparison matrices for each criterion simultaneously by a common consistent matrix of unit rank, which determines the vector of ratings. We represent and solve the optimization problem in the framework of tropical (idempotent) algebra, which deals with the theory and applications of idempotent semirings and semifields. The solution involves the introduction of two parameters that represent the minimum values of approximation error for each matrix and thereby describe the Pareto frontier for the bi-objective problem. The optimization problem then reduces to a parametrized vector inequality. The necessary and sufficient conditions for solutions of the inequality serve to derive the Pareto frontier for the problem. All solutions of the inequality, which correspond to the Pareto frontier, are taken as a complete Pareto-optimal solution to the problem. We apply these results to the decision problem of interest and present illustrative examples.

Most real-world problems require the optimization of multiple objective functions simultaneously, which can conflict with each other. The environment of these problems usually involves imprecise information derived from inaccurate measurements or the variability in decision-makers’ (DMs’) judgments and beliefs, which can lead to unsatisfactory solutions. The imperfect knowledge can be present either in objective functions, restrictions, or decision-maker’s preferences. These optimization problems have been solved using various techniques such as multi-objective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs). This paper proposes a new MOEA called NSGA-III-P (non-nominated sorting genetic algorithm III with preferences). The main characteristic of NSGA-III-P is an ordinal multi-criteria classification method for preference integration to guide the algorithm to the region of interest given by the decision-maker’s preferences. Besides, the use of interval analysis allows the expression of preferences with imprecision. The experiments contrasted several versions of the proposed method with the original NSGA-III to analyze different selective pressure induced by the DM’s preferences. In these experiments, the algorithms solved three-objectives instances of the DTLZ problem. The obtained results showed a better approximation to the region of interest for a DM when its preferences are considered.

Region of interest (ROI) tomography has gained increasing attention in recent years due to its potential to reducing radiation exposure and shortening the scanning time. However, tomographic reconstruction from ROI-focused illumination involves truncated projection data and typically results in higher numerical instability even when the reconstruction problem has unique solution. To address this problem, bothad hocanalytic formulas and iterative numerical schemes have been proposed in the literature. In this paper, we introduce a novel approach for ROI tomographic reconstruction, formulated as a convex optimization problem with a regularized term based on shearlets. Our numerical implementation consists of an iterative scheme based on the scaled gradient projection method and it is tested in the context of fan-beam CT. Our results show that our approach is essentially insensitive to the location of the ROI and remains very stable also when the ROI size is rather small.

Abstract Neuro-oncology largely consists of malignancies of the brain and central nervous system including both primary as well as metastatic tumors. Currently, a significant clinical challenge in neuro-oncology is to tailor therapies for patients based on a priori knowledge of their survival outcome or treatment response to conventional or experimental therapies. Radiomics or the quantitative extraction of subvisual data from conventional radiographic imaging has recently emerged as a powerful data-driven approach to offer insights into clinically relevant questions related to diagnosis, prediction, prognosis, as well as assessing treatment response. Furthermore, radiogenomic approaches provide a mechanism to establish statistical correlations of radiomic features with point mutations and next-generation sequencing data to further leverage the potential of routine MRI scans to serve as “virtual biopsy” maps. In this review, we provide an introduction to radiomic and radiogenomic approaches in neuro-oncology, including a brief description of the workflow involving preprocessing, tumor segmentation, and extraction of “hand-crafted” features from the segmented region of interest, as well as identifying radiogenomic associations that could ultimately lead to the development of reliable prognostic and predictive models in neuro-oncology applications. Lastly, we discuss the promise of radiomics and radiogenomic approaches in personalizing treatment decisions in neuro-oncology, as well as the challenges with clinical adoption, which will rely heavily on their demonstrated resilience to nonstandardization in imaging protocols across sites and scanners, as well as in their ability to demonstrate reproducibility across large multi-institutional cohorts.

Anomaly detection systems and many other applications are frequently confronted with the problem of finding the largest knee point in the sorted curve for a set of unsorted points. This paper proposes an efficient knee point search algorithm with minimized time complexity using the cascading top-ksorting when a priori probability distribution of the knee point is known. First, a top-ksort algorithm is proposed based on a quicksort variation. We divide the knee point search problem into multiple steps. And in each step an optimization problem of the selection numberkis solved, where the objective function is defined as the expected time cost. Because the expected time cost in one step is dependent on that of the afterwards steps, we simplify the optimization problem by minimizing the maximum expected time cost. The posterior probability of the largest knee point distribution and the other parameters are updated before solving the optimization problem in each step. An example of source detection of DNS DoS flooding attacks is provided to illustrate the applications of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract Many designers concede that there is typically more than one measure of performance for an artifact. Often, a large system is decomposed into smaller subsystems each having its own set of objectives, constraints, and parameters. The performance of the final design is a function of the performances of the individual subsystems. It then becomes necessary to consider the tradeoffs that occur in a multi-objective design problem. The complete solution to a multi-objective optimization problem is the entire set of non-dominated configurations commonly referred to as the Pareto set. Common methods of generating points along a Pareto frontier involve repeated conversion of multi-objective problems into single objective problems using weights. These methods have been shown to perform poorly when attempting to populate a Pareto frontier. This work presents an efficient means of generating a thorough spread of points along a Pareto frontier using genetic programming.

Purpose This paper aims to propose a dynamically balanced mechanism for cleaning unit used in agricultural thresher machine using a dynamically equivalent system of point masses. Design/methodology/approach The cleaning unit works on crank-rocker Grashof mechanism. This mechanism can be balanced by optimizing the inertial properties of each link. These properties are defined by the dynamic equivalent system of point masses. Parameters of these point masses define the shaking forces and moments. Hence, the multi-objective optimization problem with minimization of shaking forces and shaking moments is formulated by considering the point mass parameters as the design variables. The formulated optimization problem is solved using a posteriori approach-based algorithm i.e. the non-dominated sorting Jaya algorithm (NSJAYA) and a priori approach-based algorithms i.e. Jaya algorithm and genetic algorithm (GA) under suitable design constraints. Findings The mass, center of mass and inertias of each link are calculated using optimum design variables. These optimum parameters improve the dynamic performance of the cleaning unit. The optimal Pareto set for the balancing problem is measured and outlined in this paper. The designer can choose any solution from the set and balance any real planar mechanism. Originality/value The efficiency of the proposed approach is tested through the existing cleaning mechanism of the thresher machine. It is found that the NSJAYA is computationally more efficient than the GA and Jaya algorithm. ADAMS software is used for the simulation of the mechanism.

Accurate registration in augmented reality systems is essential to guarantee the visual consistency of the augmented environment. Although error in the virtual-real alignment is almost unavoidable, different approaches have been proposed to quantify and reduce such errors. However, many of the existing solutions require a lot of a priori information, or they only focus on camera calibration to guarantee good results in the registration. This article presents a heuristic method that aims to reduce registration errors in markerless augmented reality systems. The proposed solution sees error reduction as a mono-objective optimization problem, which is addressed by means of the Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm. Experimental results reveal the validity of the proposed method, reaching an average error of 1.49 pixels for long video sequences.
