In order to protect the natural environment from pollution, pollutant reduction in the stormwater runoff of urban areas is a particularly relevant factor. Uneven surface water flow and changes in pollutant concentration complicate conventional matching techniques and processes as well as prolong the duration of time which requires a comprehensive study in this area. Therefore, experiments on inflow stormwater turbidity and impurity with suspended solids and petroleum products were carried out according to the prepared sample collecting methodology. The study evaluated the effectiveness of cleaning a stormwater treatment plant along the settlement chamber in the chosen points. The settling time of impurities found in stormwater was analyzed under the presence of ideal conditions in the laboratory. The conducted experiments established dependence between suspended solids and turbidity. Stormwater pollution by SS was reduced only to 21–35% after heavy rain or a snow melting period in treatment plants.

The use of road tunnels in urban areas creates water pollution problems, since the tunnels must be frequently cleaned for traffic safety reasons. The washing generates extensive volumes of highly polluted water, for example, more than fivefold higher concentrations of suspended solids compared to highway runoff. The pollutants in the wash water have an affinity for particulate material, so sedimentation should be a viable treatment option. In this study, 12 in situ sedimentation trials were carried out on tunnel wash water, with and without addition of chemical flocculent. Initial suspended solids concentration ranged from 804 to 9,690 mg/L. With sedimentation times of less than 24 hours and use of a chemical flocculent, it was possible to reach low concentrations of suspended solids (<15 mg/L), PAH (<0.1 μg/L), As (<1.0 μg/L), Cd (<0.05 μg/L), Hg (<0.02 μg/L), Fe (<200 μg/L), Ni (<8 μg/L), Pb (<0.5 μg/L), Zn (<60 μg/L) and Cr (<8 μg/L). Acute Microtox® toxicity, mainly attributed to detergents used for the tunnel wash, decreased significantly at low suspended solids concentrations after sedimentation using a flocculent. The tunnel wash water did not inhibit nitrification. The treated water should be suitable for discharge into recipient waters or a wastewater treatment plant.

Stormwater management is a key urban issue in the world, in line with the global issues of urban sprawl and climate change. It is urgent to investigate the effectiveness in managing stormwater with different strategies for maintain urban resilience. A method based on a storm water management model (SWMM) was developed for assessing the control of stormwater runoff volume and the percentage removal of suspended solids by implementing a Sponge City strategy. An interdisciplinary approach was adopted incorporating Low Impact Development (LID) with urban Green Infrastructure and Gray Infrastructure paradigms in a typical old residential community in Suzhou, China. Four types of sponge facilities for reducing stormwater runoff were bio-retention cells, permeable pavements, grassed pitches, and stormwater gardens. The simulation results indicate that the stormwater pipe system can meet the management standard for storms with a five-year recurrence interval. The volume capture ratio of annual runoff is 91% and the reduction rate of suspended solids is 56%. This study demonstrates that Sponge City strategy is an effective approach for managing stormwater, particularly in old and densely populated urban areas. Implementing spongy facilities with a LID strategy for stormwater management can significantly enhance urban water resilience and increase ecosystem services.

The article presents a method for calculating the parameters of treatment facilities to bring the level of precipitation and wastewater from small enterprises, shops, and services of the Republic to the level of sewage and irrigation trays. The aim is to improve the design parameters of resource-efficient wastewater treatment plants and their widespread use, increase the production capacity of local wastewater treatment plants, improve the level of wastewater treatment and prevent environmental degradation. Hydraulic calculation of the design parameters of the settling tank was carried out at the local treatment plant. The precipitator works by precipitating suspended solids and separating petroleum products from the liquid surface. At the local treatment plant, the content of petroleum products in industrial and precipitation effluents was reduced to 3 mg/l, and the number of suspended solids to 1-1.5 mg/l.

Because of multiple constraints, e.g. existing drainage systems, little available space and higher costs, Best Management Practices (BMP) for stormwater-runoff in existing urban areas is more difficult to apply than for new urban developments. For a large urban catchment (about 22 km2) with a separate drainage system in Berlin, Germany a combination of decentral (non-structural) and semi-central stormwater-management measures proved to be the best solution. It offers a high effectiveness concerning stormwater treatment at relatively low costs. Modern planning tools such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS) were used to investigate the possibilities of implementing decentral measures in larger areas. Correlations between field surveys and data from the ‘Environmental Information System’ of Berlin shows that even in highly urbanised areas a disconnection of 30% of the impervious area can easily be achieved. The resulting reduction of the discharge makes it possible to convert existing retention tanks to soil filter tanks. The purification efficiency of this combined measures is higher than of a central stormwater settling tank which has been simulated with a pollution load model.

Abstract Stormwater treatment by lamellar and conventional clarification, with and without flocculant addition, was investigated in Toronto, Ontario, using a pilot-scale rectangular clarifier vessel with removable lamellar plates. During the 2001 to 2003 field seasons, 76 stormwater runoff events were characterized with respect to flow and quality, and further investigated for stormwater treatment. Most stormwater constituent concentrations at this site exceeded those for the U.S. NURP median urban site. A cationic polymeric flocculant dosed at 4 mg/L, with lamellar clarification, provided the best results with a total suspended solids (TSS) removal of 83% at total vessel surface loads up to 36 m/h. The clarification processes produced a concentrated sludge, which was strongly polluted by heavy metals and would require special disposal procedures.

Rainwater runoff in urban areas removes helminth eggs into the sewer system where they are carried to the treatment plant by the rainwater or remain in the sewer system until the next heavy rainfall. The concentration of parasite eggs varies according to the water flow rates in the urban system. Heavy rain cleans both the urban surfaces and the drains. In particular, it removes particles less than 100 μm diameter which are laid down in the pipes. These particles are present in high concentration in storm water whenever heavy rain is preceded by days with low rainfall. Variations in parasite concentration are thus dependent upon the precipitation of the previous days making it difficult to predict the concentrations of parasites in raw wastewater at input to the treatment plant. Many factors may affect parasite concentration including the presence of sediment in the sewer system, the intensity of rainfall and the amount of rain that has fallen on previous days. Parasites account for only a small proportion of the mass of suspended solids in rainwater. However, they represent a major health hazard in case of overflow of storm water associated with wastewater into the natural environment.

Suspended solids and oil products are considered as the most important pollutants in storm water. Surface water flow and changes in pollutant concentration complicate conventional matching techniques and prolong the duration of technological processes; therefore, a comprehensive study on this area is necessary. For this reason, the research and analysis of three different sorbents (“FIBROIL®”, “Duck”, “Reo-dry”) were performed in the laboratory. According to the results of the conducted experiment, all three sorbents have similar treatment efficiency: “FIBROIL®” – 99%, “Reo-dry” – 95%, “Duck” – 98%. Filtering rate had an influence on the effectiveness of removing petrol products (slower speed increases effectiveness). Santrauka Didžiausiais paviršinių nuotekų teršalais laikomi naftos produktai ir skendinčiosios medžiagos. Vienas iš efektyviausių naftos produktų šalinimo iš nuotekų būdų yra filtravimas pro sorbuojančiosios medžiagos filtrą. Paviršinių nuotekų tekėjimas ir teršalų koncentracijų kaita apsunkina įprastinių technologijų suderinamumą, pailgina technologinių procesų trukmės laiką, todėl yra būtini šios srities išsamūs tyrimai. Šiame darbe buvo atliktas trijų skirtingų sorbentų (,,FIBROIL®“, „Duck“, „Reo-dry“) šalinant iš paviršinių nuotekų naftos produktus eksperimentinis efektyvumo tyrimas. Atlikus bandymus laboratoriniame stende, nustatyta, kad visų trijų sorbentų efektyvumas, šalinant naftos produktus, panašus: ,,FIBROIL®“ – 99 %, ,,Reo-dry“ – 95 %, ,,Duck“ – 98 %. Naftos produktų šalinimo efektyvumą veikė filtravimo greitis (kuo mažesnis greitis, tuo didesnis efektyvumas).

Abstract Nine sets of batch experiments, each of ten to twelve days duration, were conducted in the laboratory on return-sludge samples collected from activated sludge treatment plant at Windsor. The thickened sludge samples were blended daily in a waring blender and were continuously aerated in twelve-litres capacity jars. Parallel runs were made on control sludge samples which were not blended. Amongst the parameters varied were the speed and frequency of blending and the aeration rate. The effects of these variables on progressive bio-degradation of volatile suspended solids and the settling characteristics of the sludge were determined. Blended sludge showed significant improvement in the rate of bio-degradation and its settling characteristics as compared to the control unblended sludge

The requirements imposed on the Finnish forest products industry by the water authorities have focused on the reduction of BOD and suspended solids in the wastewaters. The industry has tried to comply with these requirements, first through internal measures such as process changes and closed systems. When these have not been sufficient, external treatment has been resorted to. The Wilh. Schauman Company in Jakobstad has chosen activated sludge with extended aeration from among the available methods for treating effluent. The plant has operated since the beginning of 1986 with extremely good results. In addition to the reduction of BOD and suspended solids, there has been a marked decrease of chlorinated phenols. Chlorinated substances with higher molecular weight are also removed during the process.
