The objective of this research is to develop a modeling and simulation approach for the bending stiffness of sandwich panels which have been verified and compared by experimental results in normal condition and fire case. For this purpose, polyisocyanurate (PIR) foam has been used as core material along with trapezoidal sheeting. In order to simulate the experiments, Finite Element (FE) software ABAQUS has been applied. The modelling process contains heat transfer analyses, mechanical analyses in normal condition and sequential analyses which includes the combination of both mechanical analyses and thermal analyses. The main aim of this paper is to investigate the effect of fire on the bending stiffness and stabilization of sandwich panels. Although with increase in temperature the strength of panels decreases, this decline is not linear. The presented work should be considered as first step in STABFI project financed by Research Fund for Coal and Steel (RFCS) which its purpose is to investigate translational and also torsional stiffness of sandwich panels as future work. STABFI stands for steel cladding systems for stabilization of steel buildings in fire.

This paper presents a parametric study for the bending stiffness of mineral wool (MW) sandwich panels subjected to a bending load. The MW panels are commonly used as wall panels for industrial buildings. They provide excellent insulation in the case of fire. In this research, the performance of sandwich panels is investigated at both ambient and elevated temperatures. To reach that goal, a finite element (FE) model is developed to verify simulations with experimental results in normal conditions and fire case. The experimental investigation in the current paper is a part of STABFI project financed by Research Fund for Coal and Steel (RFCS). The numerical study is conducted using ABAQUS software. Employing simulations for analysis and design is an alternative to costly tests. However, in order to rely on numerical results, simulations must be verified with the experimental results. In this paper, after the verification of FE results, a parametric study is conducted to observe the effects of the panel thickness, length and width, as well as the facing thickness on the bending stiffness of MW sandwich panels at normal conditions. The results indicate that the panel thickness has the most significant effect on the bending stiffness of sandwich panels.

Study Design: A biomechanical study. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of cruciform and square incisions of annulus fibrosus (AF) on the mechanical stability of bovine intervertebral disc (IVD) in multiple degrees of freedom. Methods: Eight bovine caudal IVD motion segments (bone-disc-bone) were obtained from the local abattoir. Cruciform and square incisions were made at the right side of the specimen’s annulus using a surgical scalpel. Biomechanical testing of three-dimensional 6 degrees of freedom was then performed on the bovine caudal motion segments using the mechanical testing and simulation (MTS) machine. Force, displacement, torque and angle were recorded synchronously by the MTS system. P value <.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Cruciform and square incisions of the AF reduced both axial compressive and torsional stiffness of the IVD and were significantly lower than those of the intact specimens ( P < .01). Left-side axial torsional stiffness of the cruciform incision was significantly higher than a square incision ( P < .01). Neither incision methods impacted flexional-extensional stiffness or lateral-bending stiffness. Conclusions: The cruciform and square incisions of the AF obviously reduced axial compression and axial rotation, but they did not change the flexion-extension and lateral-bending stiffness of the bovine caudal IVD. This mechanical study will be meaningful for the development of new approaches to AF repair and the rehabilitation of the patients after receiving discectomy.

Background: Interbody arthrodesis is employed in the lumbar spine to eliminate painful motion and achieve stability through bony fusion. Bone grafts, metal cages, composite spacers, and growth factors are available and can be placed through traditional open techniques or minimally invasively. Whether placed anteriorly, posteriorly, or laterally, insertion of these implants necessitates compromise of the anulus—an inherently destabilizing procedure. A new axial percutaneous approach to the lumbosacral spine has been described. Using this technique, vertical access to the lumbosacral spine is achieved percutaneously via the presacral space. An implant that can be placed across a motion segment without compromise to the anulus avoids surgical destabilization and may be advantageous for interbody arthrodesis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the in vitro biomechanical performance of the axial fixation rod, an anulus sparing, centrally placed interbody fusion implant for motion segment stabilization. Method of Approach: Twenty-four bovine lumbar motion segments were mechanically tested using an unconstrained flexibility protocol in sagittal and lateral bending, and torsion. Motion segments were also tested in axial compression. Each specimen was tested in an intact state, then drilled (simulating a transaxial approach to the lumbosacral spine), then with one of two axial fixation rods placed in the spine for stabilization. The range of motion, bending stiffness, and axial compressive stiffness were determined for each test condition. Results were compared to those previously reported for femoral ring allografts, bone dowels, BAK and BAK Proximity cages, Ray TFC, Brantigan ALIF and TLIF implants, the InFix Device, Danek TIBFD, single and double Harms cages, and Kaneda, Isola, and University plating systems. Results: While axial drilling of specimens had little effect on stiffness and range of motion, specimens implanted with the axial fixation rod exhibited significant increases in stiffness and decreases in range of motion relative to intact state. When compared to existing anterior, posterior, and interbody instrumentation, lateral and sagittal bending stiffness of the axial fixation rod exceeded that of all other interbody devices, while stiffness in extension and axial compression were comparable to plate and rod constructs. Torsional stiffness was comparable to other interbody constructs and slightly lower than plate and rod constructs. Conclusions: For stabilization of the L5-S1 motion segment, axial placement of implants offers potential benefits relative to traditional exposures. The preliminary biomechanical data from this study indicate that the axial fixation rod compares favorably to other devices and may be suitable to reduce pathologic motion at L5-S1, thus promoting bony fusion.

Previous researchers have tried to predict the response of different types of structures under elevated temperatures. The results are important in preventing the collapse of buildings in fire. Post-fire status of the structures is also of interest for ensuring the safety of rescue workers during the fire and in the post-fire situations. Determining the extent of the structural damage left behind a fire event is necessary to draw up adequate repair plans. Connections play an important role on the fire performance of different structures. Due to the high cost of fire tests, adequate experimental data about a broad range of connections is not available. A vulnerable type of such connections to fire is the weld connections between I-shape beams and cylindrical columns in oil platform topsides. Considering the high probability of fire in oil platforms, study of the behaviour of these connections at elevated temperatures and in the post-fire, is of great importance. In the current study, eight small scale experimental fire tests on welded connections between I-shape beams and cylindrical columns have been conducted. Four tests are aimed at investigating the structural performance of this connection at elevated temperature. In other tests, post-fire behaviour of these connections has been studied to investigate their residual structural strength.

In order to know the static stiffness characteristics of the vehicle body in white, the bending stiffness and torsional stiffness of an automotive body in white were tested on a test bench of the static stiffness of an automotive BIW. The bending stiffness and bending deformation of the bottom of the BIW were determined. Also, the torsional stiffness and torsional deformation of the bottom of the BIW were obtained. The fitting curves and equations between loading torque and torsional angle were acquired at clockwise and counterclockwise loading, respectively.

Honeycomb sandwich panels are widely used for high performance parts subject to bending loads, but their manufacturing costs remain high. In particular, for parts with non-flat, non-uniform geometry, honeycombs must be machined or thermoformed with great care and expense. The ability to produce shaped honeycombs would allow sandwich panels to replace monolithic parts in a number of high performance, space-constrained applications, while also providing new areas of research for structural optimization, distributed sensing and actuation, and on-site production of infrastructure. Previous work has shown methods of directly producing shaped honeycombs by cutting and folding flat sheets of material. This research extends these methods by demonstrating work towards a continuous process for the cutting and folding steps of this process. An algorithm for producing a manufacturable cut-and-fold pattern from a three-dimensional volume is designed, and a machine for automatically performing the required cutting and parallel folding is proposed and prototyped. The accuracy of the creases placed by this machine is characterized and the impact of creasing order is demonstrated. Finally, a prototype part is produced and future work is sketched towards full process automation.

In this paper, by establishing the finite element model to study the dynamic characteristics of rigid frame single-rib arch bridge. By respectively changing structural parameters of the span ratios, and the compressive stiffness of arch, and the bending stiffness of arch, and the bending stiffness of bridge girder, and the layout of boom to find out the regularity of the structure on lateral stiffness, and vertical stiffness, and torsional stiffness as well as dynamic properties, it come out the results of that lateral stiffness of the structure is weaker, and increasing the span ratios and the compressive strength of arch are conducive to the improvement of the overall stiffness, and improving the bending strength of arch and layout of boom are less effect on the overall stiffness and mode shape.

An approach on the prediction of sound transmission loss for a finite sandwich panel with honeycomb core is described in the paper. The sandwich panel is treated as orthotropic and the apparent bending stiffness in two principal directions is estimated by means of simple tests on beam elements cut from the sandwich panel. Utilizing orthotropic panel theory, together with the obtained bending stiffness in two directions, the sound transmission loss of simply-supported sandwich panel is predicted by the modal expansion method. Simulation results indicated that dimension, orthotropy, and loss factor may play important roles on sound transmission loss of sandwich panel. The predicted transmission loss is compared with measured data and the agreement is reasonable. This approach may provide an efficient tool to predict the sound transmission loss of finite sandwich panels.

AbstractMany different sandwich panels are used for aeronautical applications. Open and closed cell structured foam, balsa wood or honeycomb are often used as core materials. When the core material contains closed cells, water accumulation into the cell has to be taken into account. This phenomenon occurs when in service conditions lead to operate in humidity atmosphere. Then, water vapor from air naturally condenses on cold surfaces when the sandwich panel temperature decreases. This water accumulation might increase significantly the weight of the core material. Core with a ventilated structure helps to prevent this phenomenon. Periodic cellular metal (PCM) has been motivated by potential multifunctional applications that exploit their open architecture as well as their apparent superior strength and stiffness: pyramidal, lattice, Kagome truss or woven. One of the drawbacks of these materials is the expensive cost of the manufacturing. Recently, a novel type of sandwich has been developed with bonded metallic fibers as core material. This material presents attractive combination of properties like high specific stiffness, good damping capacity and energy absorption. Metal fibers bonded with a polymeric adhesive or fabricated in a mat-like form consolidated by solid state sintering. Entangled cross-linked carbon fibers have been also studied for using as core material by Laurent Mezeix. In the present study, ventilated core materials are elaborated from networks fibers. The simplicity of elaboration is one of the main advantages of this material. Multifunctional properties are given by mixing different sorts of fibers, by example adding fibers with good electrical conduction to give electrical conductivity properties. In this study network fibers as core material are elaborated using carbon fibers, glass fibers and stainless steel fibers. In aeronautical skins of sandwich panels used are often carbon/epoxy prepreg, so epoxy resin was used to cross-link fibers. The core thickness was chosen at 30 mm and fibers length was chosen at 40 mm. Entanglement, separation of filaments and cross-linking are obtained in a specific blower room. Fibers are introduced in the blower room, compressed air is applied and in same time epoxy resin is sprayed. Indeed one of the sandwich core material properties required is low density, so yarns size need to be decreased by separating filaments. Network fibers are introduced in a specific mould and then are compressed. The density obtained before epoxy spaying is 150 kg/m3. Finally samples are polymerized at 80°C for 2 hours in a furnace under laboratory air. Compressive behavior is study to determinate the influence of fibers natures and the effect of cross-linking. Reproducibility is also checked.
