The tendencies of the land fund change during the last years are considered. An analysis of a number of normative documents was made to highlight the main problems in modern land use. A number of problems in the sphere of land relations during the period of land reform are listed. The systematic deforestation of protective forest stands, violation of the regime of land use within the boundaries of water protection zones and coastal protective bands is observed. In the article, an acute need to implement measures for the use and protection of lands with a view to meeting the set tasks within the territories, which are subjected to significant anthropogenic load as a result of population accumulation and high intensity of land use is highlighted. The need for comprehensive measures to develop and implement technical solutions for the rationalization of land use and land protection is argued in the article. The evaluation of the distribution of agricultural enterprises by the average area of agricultural and the share of the total area of agricultural land in Ukraine, which they occupy is presented. The dynamics of changes in the areas of agricultural land and arable land in their composition, as well as pastures, hayfields, deposits, and perennial plantations is investigated.

The current state of land use in Ukraine is characterized by high agricultural development and land cultivation. The predominant share in the total land stock of Ukraine is occupied by agricultural land (70.8% of the country's territory). Ukraine accounts for about 0.45% of the world land fund, while arable land occupies 2.4% of its world-wide area. According to resource-based indicators of land use Ukraine is also characterized by an extremely high level of development of living space and only about 8% of the territory can be attributed to anthropogenically unchanged. Ecological and economic aspects of land use include of rational land use, which characterizes the optimal involvement of all lands in economic circulation and their effective use for the main purpose, creation of favorable conditions for increasing productivity of agricultural land and obtaining from the unit of area the maximum amount of products at the lowest cost of labor and funds. The article substantiates that degradation of soils has its own characteristics, caused by various factors and processes. It is established that the practice of land use and the state of study of the above problems will require further study of the preconditions for the development of land degradation processes caused by the main factors: human economic activity and climatic and relief-ground conditions. The existing system of land protection in agriculture due to the influence of a number of natural and economic factors, as well as insufficient attention from the state does not ensure their rational use. Therefore, it is necessary to adhere to an integrated system of protection of agricultural land.

The article examines theoretical formation foundations of functioning system of the agricultural land market in foreign countries. It is analyzed basic and special parameters of the legislative framework on land, protection of rights and opportunities of land owners, purchase and sale procedures in the context of land relations. It has been determined that the success of land reforms and the effectiveness of implementation and functioning of the land market depend on the level of their scientific substantiation, state regulation and measures to coordinate interests of its participants. Land relations are governed by norms of civil, administrative law, or by special laws dedicated to certain types of land relations, as well as laws on agrarian and land reforms in foreign countries. Such key aspects of public regulation are considered in: the taxation system, the credit and financial mechanism, antimonopoly policy, special targeted programs. There is various level of centralization and decentralization of land management, representative bodies of territorial communities that have different powers to regulate land use, organizational and legal forms of land use and forms of ownership of land resources that are not the same in countries with different socio-political systems. It has been determined that the legal regulation of land potential should contain effective aspects of the practical application of norms in real context. That is not only the normative existence of functioning rules, but also the practical aspect of ensuring the implementation of the state's land potential through local authorities within the land areas. This issue can be analyzed by the experience of foreign countries, such as the USA, Germany, France, Italy, Poland, Cyprus, Israel.

The aim of the work was to conduct an agro-ecological assessment of agricultural lands, select a typical test area by key indicators, and conduct a comprehensive analysis with the mapping of the utilisation efficiency of this area. The aim of this work was to demonstrate the fundamental possibility of solving socio-economic and environmental problems of the land use in the context of reforming the land and property complex by the example of a specific project. The algorithm of the land management actions for efficient economic use of the territory of the key site has been offered. The proposed measures are based on the organisation of an arable land with the allocation of field, grain-grass and soil-protective crop rotations, grassing-down of spillways, and conservation of a low-productive arable land, design of a field-protective forest range, determination of the type of use of natural forage lands, allocation of places for the implementation of erosion-hazardous agricultural land afforestation, organisation of a bee park, clumps of broadleaves and micro-reserves. The prospectivity of transition from a spatial object of lands assessment to their agro-ecological type by means of morphometric analysis of the terrain using GIS-technologies, calculation of territory roughness, determination of the erosion potential of the terrain, and complex integration of the results into the typification of agro-climatic resources has been proved. The prospectivity of use of soil-recovering effects for the development of new models of resource-saving sustainable agriculture has been demonstrated.

Land resources of the agrarian sector are the most important сomponent of the national wealth of Ukraine. However, the efficiency of their use does not meet the present-day requirements, as it is aimed at the permanent increase in the gross output of agricultural products without taking into account the need for improvement and protection of soils, observing the ontology laws and ecology preservation. Land and agrarian reforms implemented through sharing and privatization of land plots have caused the formation of two largest groups of users and owners of agricultural lands: agroholdings and households. However, small and medium agrarian entities have not been properly developed, as it is done in many EU countries. The transformation of land relations in the domestic agrarian sector was directed to searching an honest landlord which had to be households. However, as follows from the study, true owners of land plots could not be found, as the reforms were implemented with significant violations and abuses. As a result, in many cases owners of land plots became individuals who were not directly related to agricultural lands. Unclaimed land shares and increased numbers of plots left by small owners indicate the failure of the land reform.  The owners of agroholdings exploiting their lands to obtain extra profits failed to use the leased lands in an efficient manner, mainly because the profitability of land was achieved without taking into account the need for preserving the soils fertility; the need to respect the laws of ecology and optology preservation is also ignored. The article substantiates the need of introducing new national priorities for the use of agricultural lands, where the formation of small and medium-sized agricultural enterprises should become the key measures. The need for inventory of land plots of the agroindustrial complex by land plot, land owner and land user is demonstrated, which will serve as a roadmap for developing the program of land use in the context of globalization and integration processes.  Efficiency enhancement of the existing agrarian entities and creating new ones by analogy with the EU countries should become a new priority of the land use policy. The authors propose to engage the capacities of domestic R&D to setting the priorities of land use in the newly created united territorial communities.

Introduction. Land reform is entering a crucial stage, which involves the gradual acquisition of the right to buy or sell agricultural land by individuals and legal entities. In such conditions, it is important to substantiate the mechanisms and trends that will be characteristic of the market for agricultural land lease, as these mechanisms today provide organized high-commodity agri-food production. Purpose Substantiation of economic and legal bases of the land lease market functioning after entry into force of norms on free sale of agricultural lands. Method (methodology). Data from the State Statistics Service of Ukraine, the State Geocadastre and the Ministry of Justice were used. Economic and legal theoretical and practical provisions related to land relations in agriculture of Ukraine are considered. Monographic and abstract-logical methods, as well as methods of comparison, generalization and analysis are used. Results. The nature of land relations in agriculture and the predominance of rent as a tool for land accumulation by agricultural enterprises is established. The size and structure of the agricultural land market are characterized, including the volumes of leased land are determined, the emphasis is on the leading position of lease in the system of land redistribution in the industry. Prospects for the development of land relations from the standpoint of entry into force of the law № 552-IX provisions. Peculiarities and expectations from the introduction of the agricultural land market are substantiated. It is established that due to the existing relations on the market of agricultural lands and the existing restrictions on their purchase and sale, economic use of land will continue to take place mainly on lease, the share of which will gradually decrease, but still remain significant.

The article describes the analysis of the actual state and the determination of the agricultural land use effectiveness; the land use sizes are graded by type of farmland, arable land, including irrigated one, hayfields and arable pastures for the subsequent ranking by specialization in terms of natural economic zones and areas. The necessity of improving the land relations’ system of agricultural entities in order to optimize their activities for the future has been considered. The need for achieving the optimal size of land in the growth of agricultural business profitability has been substantiated. The studies have shown that the analysis of the land use cost-effectiveness should be easy-to-use to any business entity. The assessment of the occupied area of a large farm in the region has been provided, reflecting the extent of land coverage by a single farm. This is directly related to the establishment of the optimum size of agricultural entities within the same district.

Engaging farmers as citizen scientists may be a cost-efficient way to answering applied research questions aimed at more sustainable land use. We used a citizen science approach with German horse farmers with a dual goal. Firstly, we tested the practicability of this approach for answering ‘real-life’ questions in variable agricultural land-use systems. Secondly, we were interested in the knowledge it can provide about locomotion of horses on pasture and the management factors influencing this behaviour. Out of 165 volunteers, we selected 40 participants to record locomotion of two horses on pasture and provide information on their horse husbandry and pasture management. We obtained complete records for three recording days per horse from 28 participants, resulting in a dataset on more individual horses than any other Global Positioning System study published in the last 30 years. Time spent walking was greatest for horses kept in box-stall stables, and walking distance decreased with increasing grazing time. This suggests that restrictions in pasture access may increase stress on grass swards through running and trampling, severely challenging sustainable pasture management. Our study, involving simple technology, clear instructions and rigorous quality assessment, demonstrates the potential of citizen science actively involving land managers in agricultural research.

Smallholder agriculture is a major source of income and food for developing nations. With more frequent drought and increasing scarcity of arable land, more accurate land-use planning tools are needed to allocate land resources to support regional agricultural activity. To address this need, we created Land Capability Classification (LCC) system maps using data from two digital soil maps, which were compared with measurements from 1305 field sites in the Dosso region of Niger. Based on these, we developed 250 m gridded maps of LCC values across the region. Across the region, land is severely limited for agricultural use because of low available water-holding capacity (AWC) that limits dry season agricultural potential, especially without irrigation, and requires more frequent irrigation where supplemental water is available. If the AWC limitation is removed in the LCC algorithm (i.e., simulating the use of sufficient irrigation or a much higher and more evenly distributed rainfall), the dominant limitations become less severe and more spatially varied. Finally, we used additional soil fertility data from the field samples to illustrate the value of collecting contemporary data for dynamic soil properties that are critical for crop production, including soil organic carbon, phosphorus and nitrogen.
