Advertising, architecture and design are perceived as an important subset of the creative industries and as having an increasing role in innovations and competitiveness of economies. However, issues such as identifying the underlying business model (BM) of the micro- and small enterprises in these industries, the manner in which BMs evolve or the degree to which their evolution is innovative remains unresolved. In the context of creative professional services (CPSs), an analysis of the six case studies involving microenterprises indicates a heterogeneity in designing BMs. Talented professionals, sophisticated management of human resources and creativity processes as well as trustworthy partners are considered generic components of value creation, whereas personalized relationships with customers are a generic component of value delivery in advertising, architecture and design. In addition, the findings indicate that microenterprises in advertising, architecture and design have a capacity to differentiate themselves from the rest of the competition through creation of complex and radical changes in their BMs.

Economic development initiatives in Tanzania recognise the importance of enterprises in the country’s economy. Similarly, rural entrepreneurship has the potential to stimulate the rural economy. The promotion of rural entrepreneurship can help to fulfil that potential, with creation of value for customers as one of the promotion initiatives. Institutions govern the value creation activities of enterprises. By focusing on the wood furniture industry, this research article analyses the influence of institutions on the value creation activities of rural Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) in Tanzania. The institution theory and the value chain model are its theoretical bases. The Mvomero district is the study area. Interviews and discussions are the data collection methods used in this qualitative study and 14 cases are analysed. The study finds that four institutional concerns influence the value creation activities of enterprises and these are: regulations compliance; regulations enforcement; regulations knowledge; and regulatory costs. However, the study excludes informal institutions. Its findings may be beneficial to stakeholders such as policymakers, development stakeholders, researchers – as well as rural MSEs. Key words: institutions, value creation activities, micro and small enterprises, rural areas, Tanzania

The purpose of this chapter is to analyze the management practices in chaotic environments followed by micro and small enterprises (MSEs) in Bogota, specifically in the neighborhoods of Candelaria, Bosa, Puente Aranda, and Tunjuelito to generate sales and profit. In order to accomplish the foregoing, a co-relation analysis is made among the management practices that can be implemented by MSEs in sales and profit when faced with chaotic environments. The management practices used as independent variables in this study were human resources management, market analysis, suppliers, direction management, finance, sales, production-operation, innovation, marketing, and entrepreneurial responsibility. The dependent variables considered were annual sales and profit.

Purpose This study aims to investigate how manufacturing firms in the creative industries harness digital technologies to undertake business model innovation. Design/methodology/approach This study used in-depth case studies to examine the complex interplay between digital technologies and business model innovation. A longitudinal approach was selected to capture major events both within the firm and in the business environment. Building on the firm’s archival data, interviews and secondary data that was available to the public, the authors carefully analyzed impactful digital technology events and the firm’s responses to the technological changes that occurred over the period of 2004–2020. Findings The findings suggest that digital technologies alone are not sufficient for business model innovation to be successful; support from sociotechnical factors is also required. Additionally, firms should reinvent a new business model when the existing ones seem to start to diminish. Research limitations/implications In this study one firm was examined as the subject, using a qualitative method. This method allowed us to observe complex interplays among the resources required in business models. Future research can combine qualitative methods with computational case studies, which utilize a large volume of quantitative big data. Practical implications The results of this study suggest that managers must ensure that the resources within and outside organizations are loosely connected and are readily available to be mobilized for supporting business model innovation. To enable this, managers must prepare the required resources in advance. Originality/value The current findings add to a growing body of literature on business model innovation and digital technologies. In particular, this study describes the process of how a traditional firm from a least developed country pursues business model innovation with the support of digital technologies.

The critical role of business model innovation (BMI) in a firm's performance has earned increasing attention from scholars and management practitioners in recent years. However, empirical research on how BMI linked business performance is quite skimpy. This study examines the effect of BMI on micro and small enterprises (MSEs) and how entrepreneurship orientation (EO) mediates the relationship. A survey research design is used in this study. Data were obtained from 142 MSEs operating in Ondo State, Nigeria, purposively selected for this study. The results revealed that BMI (β = 0.630; ρ -0.01) had a positive and significant influence on the MSEs' performance. More so, this study found that EO (β = 0.716; ρ -0.01) is positively related to a firm's performance. This study finding revealed a positive and significant link between EO and BMI (β = 0.838; ρ = 0.000). Also, this study showed that EO mediates the relationship between BMI and a firm's performance (EO: β= 0.5740; BMI: β = 0.1281; ρ -0.05). Statistically, the study's findings also exhibited that out of the six constructs used to capture BMI, only two constructs, namely, market opportunities (β=0.193; ρ -0.01) and increment in revenue generation ((β=0.230; ρ -0.01), had positive and significant links with the firm's performance. This study concluded that MSEs in developing economies, especially in sub-Saharan African countries, should integrate BMI and EO activities into their operations to overcome the macerate performance that characterized the Covid 19 pandemic period.

In the Philippines, micro and small enterprises (MSEs) comprise the largest part of the business economic undertakings and are among the most important development agents in rural communities like Marinduque. MSEs offer opportunities to poor people the possibility of earning income, training, work experience and employment. However, most of the micro and small enterprises in the country perform behind the neighboring ASEAN countries. Thus, assessing the impact of their management practices on operational functions (marketing, production, financial, human resources) and the significant relationship to MSEs performance (sales, production, and income) as the basis for government interventions. The study disclosed that management practices of 35 selected manufacturing MSEs on operational function is doing well with an overall mean of 3.70 interpreted as "Mostly Practiced". Of all the variables, marketing emerged to have the highest mean of 3.95, interpreted as "Mostly Practiced". What is alarming is the findings on human resources, which got the lowest mean of 3.40, interpreted as "Practiced". Overall performance in terms of sales, production, and income is 3.64, interpreted as "very satisfactory". Using Pearson, the operational business function has a positive correlation to performance. Based on the operational management practices, the following have a vital role for the success of MSEs such as type of business organization, decision-making process, creation of policy, rules, and regulations, planning and implementation, and management directions of the enterprise. As to these findings, programs of government will need to give emphasis on the weak areas and highlight the good practices as a basis for crafting tailored interventions for each MSEs.

Basically a natural partnership will achieve its goal if mutual requirements, mutual reinforcement, and mutual benefit can be maintained and made a strong fundamental commitment among partners. Nevertheless the development seems very slow. The cause is the presence of specific and different conditions and structure factors compared to other countries. Along with that, we still encounter various forms of gaps, such as inequality among regions, among income groups, between sectors, among economic actors, and so forth. The next problem is that in business entities including cooperatives and micro and small enterprises in running their business activities requires business partnerships with medium and large enterprises in order to improve business performance and business scale. While on the other hand our economic conditions and structures are not yet fully conducive to fostering partnerships based on purely business considerations or competitive market motivations but the business partnership of the foundation is strong enough in our country's constitution. Partnerships will work if partners are equally benefiting. Our concept of partnership is like that, although in the short term, there is a party or a party benefiting more from the other side.
