Purpose – The conducted research aimed at estimating the technical efficiency of didactic activity in the group of universities of technology in Poland using the non-parametric Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method. Research methodology – The measurement was based on the model of directional distance function with undesirable output under variable return-to-scale and output-oriented (DDF BadOutput-V-O). Findings – The research allowed to group universities in 2010 and 2015 into three categories, i.e. efficient universities and universities above and below the average efficiency. It has been shown that it is justified to use alternative models of efficiency measurement covering different perspectives. The application of the model from a financial and employment perspective showed significant differences in performance levels in some cases. Research limitations – This study only looks at universities of technology, so the future study should be extended to other universities and compare efficiency of higher education with the level of study effectiveness (dropout rate education, graduation rates). Practical implications – The use of the DDF model with undesirable output allowed to obtain results closer to the actual conditions of teaching in public universities than in the case of using classic DEA models, wich only take the desired output into accoount. Originality/Value – The originality of the work lies in the use of a more general and flexible DDF approach than the classical DEA models, which made it possible to estimate the efficiency of universities taking into account the desirable (positive) and undesirable (negative) output.

This chapter aims at evaluating the effect of Italian regional policies in the agricultural field. Performances of regional systems have been evaluated through an extension of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), the Directional Distance Function (DDF), which allows one to consider emissions of ammonia as undesirable output. Productivity and efficiency of agricultural systems are based not only on agri-production but also on the contraction of emissions deriving from the fertilizer's usage. Results show that a convergence path between productivity and public funds exists and that there are differences among Italian macro-areas considering both efficiency and productivity dynamics. In particular, if efficiency scores are interpreted with the amount of public funds distributed by the Rural Development Programs over the period 2000-2006, empirical evidence suggests that more resources are received by disadvantaged areas. Findings underline that the most disadvantaged areas, in terms of productivity, are those receiving more structural public funds.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the efficiency of aluminium firms in India. Design/methodology/approach Different data envelopment analysis (DEA) models have been employed to calculate the various efficiency scores of aluminium firms in India. Findings The major findings of the DEA analysis suggest that 62 per cent firms are found to be technically efficient. Overall, the industry shows good performance with mean technical efficiency levels of 0.936 and 0.911 for VRS and CRS frameworks, respectively. Further, five firms show decreasing returns to scale, signifying the overutilization of plant capacities. Six firms exhibit increasing returns to scale implying underutilization of plants. The results show that domestic firms are more efficient than the foreign firms, young firms are more efficient than young firms and small- and medium-scale firms are more efficient than large-scale firms. Practical implications The results of this study would help the aluminium firms to formulate an appropriate strategy to cautiously use their resources to increase their efficiency levels. Originality/value To the best of authors’ knowledge, no earlier studies seem to have ranked the aluminium firms based on their super-efficiency scores. Further, no previous studies seem to have examined the efficiency differences among aluminium firms across different size, age and ownership groups.

Abstract Nowadays, when marketing and branding change, companies are trying to find new ways to evaluate the effectiveness of their marketing activities as they impact on current and future business results. The main objective of the contribution is to evaluate the effectiveness of decision making unit (DMU) production units in the form of selected Slovak brands through the non-parametric data envelopment analysis (DEA) method. The sample size consists of 10 Slovak brands (Slovenská sporiteľňa, VÚB banka, Tatra banka, ESET, Slovnaft, Matador, Rajec, Sygic, Sedita and Zlatý bažant). Through DEA, we have gained a portfolio of effective and portfolio of ineffective brands operating in Slovakia. Depending on the choice of the DEA model, effective brands included Slovenská sporiteľňa, Sygic, Zlatý Bažant, Rajec and Sedita. Other brands were classified as ineffective. The result for ineffective brands is the creation of archetypal characters that we propose in Results section. The part of Results section is the focus of the businesses of the brands in question on the use of social media, to a larger extent, create a social media voice so that the personality of the brand is reflected in contributions in social media communicating on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. In contribution, deduction, induction, analysis and marketing research methods were used.

IT capability improves organization resilience in uncertain social environments (such as the outbreak of COVID-19) and, thus, becomes a key factor in the organization of sustainable development. However, studies have rarely quantitatively examined the efficiency of IT capability and its effects on hotel performance. This study aims to investigate how and to what extent IT capability facilitates hotel operations. Context-dependent and measure-specific data envelopment analysis (DEA) models were employed to assess hotel performance and IT capability. The data from international hotels in Hong Kong were collected for an empirical analysis. The results indicated that the hotels in Hong Kong are classified as market leaders, challenges, followers, and nichers based on the efficiency scores. This study then analyzed the differences and relationship between hotel IT capability and hotel performance. The improvement targets of each input and output variable were also provided for further decision-making. Both theoretical and practical implications for hotel management are discussed.

In data envelopment analysis (DEA) methodology, superefficiency models eliminate the DMU to be evaluated from the production possibility set (PPS) to investigate whether its performance is superefficient. However, the infeasibility has been found in the superefficiency models when variable return-to-scale (VRS) technology is assumed. In recent developments, directional distance functions (DDF) are introduced into VRS superefficiency models to address the infeasibility, and the obtained efficiency scores from the DDF-based VRS superefficiency measure are used to rank all DMUs. In this study, we discuss conditions on selecting some proper reference bundles for feasible DDF and suggest a new DDF-based VRS superefficiency measure, which is unit-invariant and does not need to specify additional parameters. Two example illustrations are evaluated to demonstrate the feasibility and usefulness of our proposed DDF-based VRS superefficiency ranking method.
