Nonlinear finite element (FE) analysis of reinforced concrete (RC) structures is characterized by numerous modeling options and input parameters. To accurately model the nonlinear RC behavior involving concrete cracking in tension and crushing in compression, practitioners make different choices regarding the critical modeling issues, e.g., defining the concrete constitutive relations, assigning the bond between the concrete and the steel reinforcement, and solving problems related to convergence difficulties and mesh sensitivities. Thus, it is imperative to review the common modeling choices critically and develop a robust modeling strategy with consistency, reliability, and comparability. This paper proposes a modeling strategy and practical recommendations for the nonlinear FE analysis of RC structures based on parametric studies of critical modeling choices. The proposed modeling strategy aims at providing reliable predictions of flexural responses of RC members with a focus on concrete cracking behavior and crushing failure, which serve as the foundation for more complex modeling cases, e.g., RC beams bonded with fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) laminates. Additionally, herein, the implementation procedure for the proposed modeling strategy is comprehensively described with a focus on the critical modeling issues for RC structures. The proposed strategy is demonstrated through FE analyses of RC beams tested in four-point bending—one RC beam as reference and one beam externally bonded with a carbon-FRP (CFRP) laminate in its soffit. The simulated results agree well with experimental measurements regarding load-deformation relationship, cracking, flexural failure due to concrete crushing, and CFRP debonding initiated by intermediate cracks. The modeling strategy and recommendations presented herein are applicable to the nonlinear FE analysis of RC structures in general.

AbstractConcrete cracking caused by corrosion of reinforcement could significantly shorten the durability of reinforced concrete structure. It remains critical to investigate the process and mechanism of the corrosion occurring to concrete reinforcement and establish the theoretical prediction model of concrete expansion force for the whole process of corrosion cracking of reinforcement. Under the premise of uniform corrosion of reinforcing steel bars, the elastic mechanics analysis method is adopted to analyze the entire process starting from the corrosion of steel bars to the cracking of concrete due to corrosion. A relationship model between the expansion force of corrosion of steel bars and the surface strain of concrete is established. On the cuboid reinforced concrete specimens with square cross-sections, accelerated corrosion tests are carried out to calibrate and verify the established model. The model can be able to estimate the real-time expansion force of reinforced concrete at any time of the whole process from the initiation of steel corrosion to the end of concrete cracking by measuring the surface strain of concrete. It could be useful for quantitative real-time monitoring of steel corrosion in concrete structures.

An experimental investigation is performed on various cold-formed profiled sheets to study the connection behavior of composite deck slab actions using bolted shear connectors. Various profiles like dovetailed (or) re-entrant profiles, rectangular profiles and trapezoidal profiles are used in the present investigation. This experimental investigation deals with the evaluation of various parameters such as the ultimate load carrying capacity versus deflection, load versus slip, ductility ratio, strain energy and modes of failure in composite slab specimens with varying profiles. From the test results the performance of dovetailed profiled composite slabs’ resistance is significantly higher than the other two profiled composite deck slabs.

The last accidents of the NPP in Chernobyl and Fukushima give us the new inspiration to verify the safety level of the NPP structures. This paper presents the new requirements to test of the safety and reliability of the NPP structures due to the last accidents in the world. The risk assessment to verify of the safety and reliability of the NPP structures based on probabilistic and nonlinear analysis is presented. The uncertainties of the loads level (long-time temperature and dead loads), the material model (concrete cracking and crushing, behaviour of the reinforcement and liner), degradation effects and other influences following from the inaccuracy of the calculated model and numerical methods were taken into account in the LHS method. The results of the deterministic and probabilistic analysis of the NPP structures are presented.

This paper presents an experimental program to justify the barrier design at the barrier–deck junction when compared to the factored applied transverse vehicular loading specified in the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code (CHBDC). Compared to the dimensioning and the glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) bar detailing of a recently crash-tested GFRP-reinforced barrier, the adopted barrier configurations in this paper were similar to those specified by Ministry of Transportation of Québec (MTQ) for TL-5 barrier except that the base of the barrier was 40 mm narrower and the deck slab is of 200 mm thickness, leading to reduction in the GFRP embedment depth into the deck slab. Four full-scale TL-5 barrier specimens were tested to collapse. Correlation between the experimental findings and the factored applied moments from CHBDC equivalent vehicle impact forces resulting from the finite-element modelling of the barrier–deck system was conducted followed by recommendations for use of the proposed design in highway bridges in Québec.
