In this paper, the bending behavior of functionally graded single-layered, symmetric and non-symmetric sandwich beams is investigated according to a new higher order shear deformation theory. Based on this theory, a novel parabolic shear deformation function is developed and applied to investigate the bending response of sandwich beams with homogeneous hardcore and softcore. The present theory provides an accurate parabolic distribution of transverse shear stress across the thickness and satisfies the zero traction boundary conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the functionally graded sandwich beam without using any shear correction factors. The governing equations derived herein are solved by employing the finite element method using a two-node beam element, developed for this purpose. The material properties of functionally graded sandwich beams are graded through the thickness according to the power-law distribution. The predictive capability of the proposed finite element model is demonstrated through illustrative examples. Four types of beam support, i.e. simply-simply, clamped-free, clamped–clamped, and clamped-simply, are used to study how the beam deflection and both axial and transverse shear stresses are affected by the variation of volume fraction index and beam length-to-height ratio. Results of the numerical analysis have been reported and compared with those available in the open literature to evaluate the accuracy and robustness of the proposed finite element model. The comparisons with other higher order shear deformation theories verify that the proposed beam element is accurate, presents fast rate of convergence to the reference results and it is also valid for both thin and thick functionally graded sandwich beams. Further, some new results are reported in the current study, which will serve as a benchmark for future research.

The study covers the modeling three-layered beam incorporating a magnetorheological (MR) fluid. The beam finite element model was created using the ANSYS software. The beam comprises two outer layers made of aluminium and MR fluid layer in between, sealed with silicone rubber. Interactions of the magnetic field are taken into account by varying the parameters of the finite elements. Data required for identification were collected from results of measurement of the beams free vibrations. The identification procedure assumes the good agreement between the frequencies of the beams free vibrations and dimensionless damping coefficients obtained from research and computation data. The validity of proposed beams finite element model was also investigated. Finally some numerical results were presented.

In this work, a finite element model was developed for vibration analysis of sandwich beam with a viscoelastic material core sandwiched between two elastic layers. The frequency-dependent viscoelastic dynamics of the sandwich beam were investigated by using finite element analysis and experimental validation. The stiffness and damping of the viscoelastic material core is frequency-dependent, which results in complex vibration modes of the sandwich beam system. A third order seven parameter Biot model was used to describe the frequency-dependent viscoelastic behavior, which was then incorporated with the finite elements of the sandwich beam. Considering the parameters identification, a strategy to determine the parameters of the Biot model has been outlined, and the curve fitting results closely follow the experiment. With identified model parameters, numerical simulations were carried out to predict the vibration and damping behavior in the first three vibration modes, and the results showed that the finite model presented here had good accuracy and efficiency in the specific frequency range of interest. The experimental testing on the viscoelastic sandwich beam validated the numerical predication. The experimental results also showed that the finite element modeling method of sandwich beams that was proposed was correct, simple and effective.

Sandwich plates have been extensively used in many engineering applications such as automotive and aerospace. In the present paper, an accurate finite element model is presented for bending analysis of soft-core rectangular sandwich plates. The sandwich plate is composed of three layers: top and bottom skins and core layer. The core is assumed as a soft orthotropic material and skins are assumed generally unequal laminated composites. Finite element model of the problem has been constructed in the ANSYS 11.0 standard code area. Continuity conditions of transverse shear stresses at the interfaces are satisfied as well as the conditions of zero transverse shear stresses on the upper and lower surfaces of plate. Also transverse flexibility and transverse normal strain and stress of core are considered. The effect of geometrical parameters of the sandwich plate are studied. Comparison of the present results with those of plate theories confirms the accuracy of the proposed model.

Abstract A finite element model was developed to simulate the tire-rim interface. Elastomers were modeled by nonlinear incompressible elements, whereas plies were simulated by cord-rubber composite elements. Gap elements were used to simulate the opening between tire and rim at zero inflation pressure. This opening closed when the inflation pressure was increased gradually. The predicted distribution of contact pressure at the tire-rim interface agreed very well with the available experimental measurements. Several variations of the tire-rim interference fit were analyzed.

Abstract A three-dimensional (3D) beam finite element model was developed to investigate the torsional stiffness of a twisted steel-reinforced cord-rubber belt structure. The present 3D beam element takes into account the coupled extension, bending, and twisting deformations characteristic of the complex behavior of cord-rubber composite structures. The extension-twisting coupling due to the twisted nature of the cords was also considered in the finite element model. The results of torsional stiffness obtained from the finite element analysis for twisted cords and the two-ply steel cord-rubber belt structure are compared to the experimental data and other alternate solutions available in the literature. The effects of cord orientation, anisotropy, and rubber core surrounding the twisted cords on the torsional stiffness properties are presented and discussed.
