An analytical solution of the problem of a cylindrically anisotropic tube which contains a line dislocation is presented in this study. The state space formulation in conjunction with the eigenstrain theory is proved to be a feasible and systematic methodology to analyze a tube with the existence of dislocations. The state space formulation which expediently groups the displacements and the cylindrical surface traction can construct a governing differential matrix equation. By using Fourier series expansion and the well developed theory of matrix algebra, the asymmetrical solutions are not only explicit but also compact in form. The dislocation considered in this study is a kind of mixed dislocation which is the combination of edge dislocations and a screw dislocation and the dislocation line is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the tube. The degeneracy of the eigen relation and the technique to determine the inverse of a singular matrix are thoroughly discussed, so that the general solutions can be applied to the case of isotropic tubes, which is one of the novel features of this research. The results of isotropic problems, which are belong to the general solutions, are compared with the well-established expressions in the literature. The satisfied correspondences of these comparisons indicate the validness of this study. A cylindrically orthotropic tube is also investigated as an example and the numerical results for the displacements and tangential stress on the outer surface are displayed. The effects on surface stresses due to the existence of a dislocation appear to have a characteristic of localized phenomenon.

Stress Singularity of Edge Delamination in Angle-Ply and Cross-Ply Laminates

By utilizing the general solutions derived for the plies with arbitrary fiber orientations under uniform axial strain (Huang and Chen, 1994), the explicit solutions of the edge-delamination stress singularities for the angle-ply and cross-ply laminates are obtained. The dominant edge-delamination stress singularities for the angle-ply laminates are found to be a real constant, −1/2, and a pair of complex conjugates, −1/2±i/2πln{(b+b2−a2)/a}. For the cross-ply laminates, the significant effect of transverse shear stresses of the laminate is considered and the dominant edge-delamination stress singularities are shown as −1/2 and −1/2±i/2πln{(c2+c22−4c1c3)/2c1}. a, b, cl, c2, and c3 are the corresponding combined complex constants. In addition, two elementary forms of edge-delamination stress singularity, say, r−1/2 and rδr(lnr)n(δr=n−3/2,n=1,2...) exist for both the angle-ply and cross-ply laminates. Excellent correlations between the present results and available solutions show the validity of the approach. The deficiencies of the solutions available in the literature are compensated. New results for other angle-ply and cross-ply laminates are also provided.

3D solutions of the dynamical equations in the presence of external forces are derived for a homogeneous, prestressed medium. 2D plane waves solutions are obtained from general solutions and show that there exist two types of plane waves, namely, quasi-P waves and quasi-SV waves. Expressions for slowness surfaces and apparent velocities for these waves are derived analytically as well as numerically and represented graphically.

Abstract Equations of elasticity and consolidation for a porous elastic material containing a fluid have been previously established (1, 5). General solutions of these equations for the isotropic case are developed, giving directly the displacement field or the stress field in analogy with the Boussinesq-Papkovitch solution and the stress functions of the theory of elasticity. General properties of the solutions also are examined and the viewpoint of eigenfunctions in consolidation problems is introduced.
