Current backhaul networks typically comprise a wired middle mile and a wireless last mile part. The wireless part is almost exclusively based on tree topologies. However, a lot could be gained by deploying mesh-based backhauls. Meshes allow better network capacity exploitation due to load balancing and offer inherent resilience to link degradations or failures. Yet meshes come with increased complexity in terms of radio configuration, routing, or mobility management. This chapter proposes architecture and mechanisms for carrier-grade mesh-based wireless backhauls. One special focus is that it supports heterogeneous backhauls, which encompass multiple different wireless technologies. The proposition has been successfully deployed in a test network.1

Cognitive wireless mesh networks use network coding techniques can improve the transmission performance. Thus, a new load-balanced routing measure CRM-LB(Coding-aware Routing Metric with Load Balancing) based on network coding was presented, the CRM-LB increase of the considerations of traffic concentration level congestion level all nodes on the path P based on CRM(Coding-aware Routing Metric). Further proposed cognitive wireless mesh networks multicast routing CLR(Coding and Load-balancing Routing) based on the CRM-LB. The protocol can increase network coding opportunities, taking into account the network load balancing. The performance analysis and simulation results show that the protocol, under the premise of improving throughput, not only to better support network coding, and to achieve load balancing in network.

The internet offers services for users which can be accessed in a collaborative shared manner. Users control these services, such as online gaming and social networking sites, with handheld devices. Wireless mesh networks (WMNs) are an emerging technology that can provide these services in an efficient manner. Because services are used by many users simultaneously, security is a paramount concern. Although many security solutions exist, they are not sufficient. None have considered the concept of load balancing with secure communication for online services. In this paper, a load aware multiparty secure group communication for online services in WMNs is proposed. During the registration process of a new client in the network, the Load Balancing Index (LBI) is checked by the router before issuing a certificate/key. The certificate is issued only if the value of LBI is less than a predefined threshold. The authors evaluate the proposed solution against the existing schemes with respect to metrics like storage and computation overhead, packet delivery fraction (PDF), and throughput. The results show that the proposed scheme is better with respect to these metrics.
