Objectives: to characterize the scientific production on Palliative Care in the process of human terminality in the Health field, from 2007 to 2016. Methods: integrative review of the literature conducted in September and October 2016, available from the Virtual Health Library through the electronic databases: SciELO, LILACS and BDENF. The guiding question was: What is the characterization of the scientific production on Palliative Care in the process of the human terminality disseminated in online journals in the Health field, from 2007 to 2016? The study sample consisted of 27 publications related to the investigated topic, using the descriptors "palliative care and terminality". The analyzed data were grouped and presented in figures. Results: from the selected publications, two thematic categories emerged: Palliative care to the terminal patient with an emphasis on humanization and Assistance to the terminal patient in palliative  care. Conclusion: this review verified that the production is incipient, and that technical and humanized actions guide the practice of palliative care.

ABSTRACTObjectives: to identify the scientific production about palliative care in online periodicals related to the health field during 2002 and 2009. Metodology: this is a documental investigation executed in the databases Latin American and Caribbean Center on Health Sciences Information - LILACS, Scientific Eletronic Library Online – SciELO, Information System of the Library of the World Health Organization - WHOLIS and The Library of the Pan American Health Organization - PAHO; 27 articles were part of the sample. To achieve the proposed objectives, chose the technique of thematic content analysis, following the steps of pre-analysis, classification and categorization, with its sub-categories, analysis and interpretation of data. Results: the research revealed that 2007 presented the highest production, with eight (29%) articles. According to the emphasis given by the authors, the themes concerning ethics and bioethics, emotional, psychological, spiritual and technical care came up. Conclusion: it is evident that this different kind of treatment has been calling researcher’s attention, with an increasing number of studies focusing on this theme. This provides an outstanding outlook for the insertion of palliative care in health assistance centers and in the academic formation of professionals from different areas. Descriptors: hospice care; palliative care; terminal care; terminally ill; periodicals; health; scientific communication and diffusion; health. ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to integrative review of publications concerning the role of speech and language therapists in regards to communication strategies in palliative care, as well as the characterization of the types of communication used in these cases. The search was conducted in the databases SciELO, LILACS and PubMed from 2001 to 2016. The studies selected included abstracts or full articles addressing aspects of communication in palliative care, especially those related to speech and language therapy, with an emphasis on communication. Ten articles focused on communication, and published after 2004, were selected, half being literature reviews, two, case reports, two others, quantitative exploratory studies, and one, a qualitative exploratory study, with only 3 specifically describing the communication strategies used by speech and language therapists in patients in palliative care. The descriptors found were: palliative care, communication, speech and language therapy, quality of life, dysphagia, swallowing and elderly. Four of the ten articles showed the importance of patients communication in palliative care. When described, it is up to the speech and language therapist to provide family support, evaluate the patient, favore patient-family and patient-team intervention, manage and intervene in communication and swallowing. Finally, the most used communication strategies were non-verbal communication, communication board, electronic equipment, verbal communication and speech valve. The analysis of the characterization of the communication in palliative care over the past 15 years allowed concluding that the attention to communication is recent and is only described in a few reports, includes non-verbal communication in different ways as the most frequent resource, but provides oral communication as an important factor for maintaining dignity and comfort in this scenario. Speech and language therapist are the main interlocutors for the maintenance, mediation and adaptation of communication, within the multidisciplinary team as well as among patients, their family and the care team.

Abstract BackgroundLiving with life-limiting illness significantly impacts quality of life. A growing body of evidence suggests that arts engagement, facilitated by artists, promotes a sense of well-being and connection with others. However, much of the evidence is drawn from the use of the arts in broad health contexts or from creative arts therapies’ literature. This review aimed to systematically identify and synthesize existing evidence in order to reveal key knowledge gaps and to inform future research and practice. MethodsAn integrative review of the literature was conducted using a pre-defined, comprehensive search strategy. Databases searched included: PubMed inclusive of MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase. Search terms included variations on visual arts, literary arts, and performing arts; service users or patients; and palliative care or end-of-life care. The quality and rigor of articles were scored using Hawker and colleagues’ tool designed to systematically appraise disparate studies. Synthesis was conducted using a constant comparison method as outlined in the integrative review framework.ResultsEight reviewed studies explored literary, performing, and visual arts engagement in residential hospice, day hospice, and hospitals in England, the United States, France, and Canada. Seven of eight studies used qualitative methods and one study engaged in mixed methods. Patient perspectives were most commonly represented followed by health care professionals and family members. Creative writing, music, and visual art were predominant modalities whilst dance and theatre were underrepresented. Themes identified across studies associated arts engagement with 1) a sense of well-being, 2) a newly discovered, or re-framed, sense of self, 3) connection with others, 4) challenges associated with practice. ConclusionThis review synthesized current evidence and key knowledge gaps regarding artists' facilitation of arts engagement in palliative and end-of-life (EOL) care. It serves as a starting point in the consideration of next steps in standardizing professional practice and preparation for artists working in palliative and EOL care settings specifically. Recommendations for future research include exploring the value of collaboration between artists and palliative care teams when engaging with individuals living with life-limiting illness.
