Italian Historical Opera Houses are private or public spaces built around a cavea, with tiers of boxes on the surrounding walls. At the early age – from 16th to 18th century – boxes were private properties of the richest class, typically the financial responsible of the whole building. The stalls hosted the middle class, that gradually increased its social position and for this reason the wooden seats were progressively replaced by chairs. The gallery was reserved to lower classes. Does this social division correspond to a different acoustic comfort? The present work tries to answer this question using subjective preference models provided by scholars. With this aim, the room criteria defined by different authors and in distinct times are lined up with the ISO 3382 standards and analysed depending on the acoustic peculiarities of an Italian Historical Opera House selected as case study. Calibrated impulse responses were handled through the numerical simulations of a whole orchestra of virtual sound sources in the pit.

In order to successfully carry out software product line engineering, it is important to manage variability and explicit traceability management of variabilities with development artifacts. Trace links of variability with development artifacts allows software engineers to have rapid product development and reduces maintenance efforts resulting from requirement changes or defect corrections as trace links improve the understandability of their side effects. In this study, the authors present a Variability Tracing Approach (VTA), which consists of variability analysis, variability classification, and variability implementation. The proposed approach is applied to developing the development of a washing machine software platform. This paper describes the results of how a member product can be configured under the proposed VTA.

Understanding conceptions of the protection of cultural heritage continues to develop until now. Presently, urban historic places are not only comprehended as tangible but also include intangible dimensions. However, the conservation of cultural heritage dominantly still emphasises the visual sense more than any other senses. Thus, this paper addressed several questions on the role of human senses, the historic sonic environments, and the soundmarks of the past in examining a historical area. This paper aims to reveal the relation between sound sources and its predicted sonic environment in historic places over the time. The case study was Fatahillah Square, Jakarta, which has been documented from the 19th century until now. Some methods were carried out such as soundwalk, recalled in memory, and visual analysis. The results show that comprehensive study of multisensorial stimulus can increase a holistic understanding of historic places. Therefore, the protection of historic sites cannot only focus on the object per se, but also it must be considered to be a holistic entity. This research highlights new perspectives in analysing historical areas using combination of pictorial sources and sonic information.

Head-related transfer function (HRTF), which varies across individuals at the same direction, has grabbed widespread attention in the field of acoustics and been used in many scenarios. In order to in-depth investigate the performance of individualized HRTFs on perceiving the spatialization cues, this study presents an integrated algorithm to obtain individualized HRTFs, and explores the advancement of such individualized HRTFs in perceiving the spatialization cues through two different binaural experiments. An integrated method for HRTF individualization on the use of Principle Component Analysis (PCA), Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) and Partial Least Square Regression (PLSR) was presented first. The objective evaluation was then made to verify the algorithmic effectiveness of that method. Next, two subjective experiments were conducted to explore the advancement of individualized HRTFs in perceiving the spatialization cues. One was auditory directional discrimination degree based on semantic differential method, in which the azimuth information of sound sources was told to the listeners before listening. The other was auditory localization, in which the azimuth information was not told to the listeners before listening. The corresponding statistical analyses for the subjective experimental results were made. All the experimental results support that individualized HRTFs obtained from the presented method achieve a preferable performance in perceiving the spatialization cues.

AbstractIn the guidelines about the management of areas of good environmental noise quality recently published by the European Environment Agency (EEA) it is suggested to combine different methodologies, like noise mapping, sound level measurements and the soundscape approach. Such a recommendation has started to be recognised by a number of local authorities in Europe that are gradually integrating a holistic concept into their environmental noise policies. This research aimed to explore and demonstrate the possibility to integrate conventional noise mapping methods and soundscape methods in an actual urban redevelopment project. A case study was made using the Valley Gardens project in Brighton & Hove (UK). Different scenarios of sound-pressure level distributionswere simulated for both traffic sound sources (i.e. noise maps) and natural sound sources (i.e. sound maps). Additionally, individual responses about the sound environment of the place collected during an on-site question survey were used to implement soundscape maps.The overall picture revealed that the road traffic noise should be reduced, but also it is feasible that preferred sounds likewater features or birdsong could be introduced to make the sound environment more appropriate for the place. Generally, within the framework of this research, noise maps, sound maps and soundscape maps were used together to "triangulate" different layers of information related to the acoustic environment and the way it is perceived, providing a possible working procedure to consider for planners and policy-makers in the future.

We are interested in sonifying the molecular structures of amino acids. This paper describes the context and the first design choices for our approach. So far, we believe an amino acid molecule is too complex to be perceived at once. Therefore, we have designed an interactive form of sonification in which the listener navigates through the molecule over the network of carbon atoms. We describe our different approaches and discuss the topic of immediacy: the time it takes to recognize the structure surrounding the listener’s position while navigating. Furthermore, we touch upon the question how many atoms we can sonify simultaneously and the role auditory masking plays in this context. To overcome auditory masking, we propose to use irregular but easy to recognize sounds. We conclude with an interest in a three-dimensional navigation environment using general molecular structures for further research and development.
