Abstract Pacific Island Countries have limited capacity to engage in scientific research involving marine genetic resources in areas beyond national jurisdiction (abnj). Marine scientific research and capacity development are central to the regime for technology transfer established by the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (losc), but gaps and ambiguities weaken this framework. In this article, options to strengthen scientific capacity in Pacific Island Countries, through the development of a new international legally binding instrument for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in abnj under the losc, are examined. The international framework for technology transfer could be strengthened by fostering an integrated approach to the advancement, sharing and application of scientific knowledge. Coordination and collaboration at global and regional levels will be required to increase marine science cooperation, improve access to data and information, deliver training, and overcome barriers to develop institutional and individual scientific capacity.

The purpose of the article: to outline peculiarities of realizing activity and integrated methodological approaches when analysing the system of academic staff training by means of privat associate professorship in Ukrainian universities in the second half of the XIX – at the beginning of the XX century, theoretical provisions on the research methods for the specified problem. Methods of the research: analysis, synthesis, abstraction, generalization, classification, comparison, search and bibliographic method. Results of the research. The author specifies the principles of the activity approach (development, historical character, subjectivity; internalization and exteriorization; unified structure of external and internal activity; activity), requirements to the integrated approach (establishing interrelations of the investigated phenomenon, considering external influences, elimination of casual factors), requirements to scientific methods (determinacy, purposefulness, effectiveness, reliability, efficiency). The activity approach makes it possible to determine the effectiveness of the institute of private associate professorship in the system of academic staff training in Ukrainian universities in the second half of the XIX – early XX century, aims to identify its target, content, procedural, organizational and technological integrity. The integrated approach allowed for studying the subject of scientific research, namely academic staff training by means of private associate professorship in the pre-revolutionary universities of Ukraine, on the grounds of the identified components (need, subject, object, activity content, conditions, result). Particular attention was focused on the theoretical provisions on the scientific methods (historical-comparative, historical-genetic, historical-structural, historical-diachronic, chronological, modelling, personality-biographical, content analysis, interpretation, etc.) used in the study. Conclusions. Methodological substantiation of scientific research contributes to the holistic presentation of the specified problem.Key words: activity and integrated methodological approaches, scientific methods, academic staff, privat associate professorship.

This article deals with two of the four primary language skills – listening and reading. The author tries to show not only differences but also similarities between these two receptive language skills, as research has shown that they are very close to one another and have much in common, especially in terms of psychological aspects. The author draws readers’ attention to the fact that both processes – listening and reading – are connected with acquiring and understanding information, entail a critical and creative interpretation of a given text, have similar structure as well as require much concentration and ability to read between the lines, and, furthermore, to understand what is not said or written directly. It is suggested that an integrated approach should be incorporated into the foreign language teaching process, as there are clear similarities between the two aforementioned language skills, especially in the psychological dimension.

The article is devoted to the scientific heritage and life path of the professor of the faculty of psychology A.V. Yarmolenko. The scientific research of A.V. Yarmolenko was largely determined by the ideas of her teacher V.M. Ankylosing spondylitis - the founder of the St. Petersburg psychological school. First of all, these are the ideas of an integrated approach, as well as the study of pathological phenomena as a method of understanding normal psychology. The position that the mental development of abnormal and normal children proceeds according to the same laws is also important. A.V. Yarmolenko carried out the first multilateral clinical and psychological study of the ontogenetic characteristics of children with simultaneous visual and hearing impairment.

Teaching biology is characterized by a great number of concepts and facts. It is very difficult to concisely represent all important concepts and facts. In order to effectively present important concepts such as pollination and pollinators, concept maps have been applied. In particular, the pedagogical experiment was applied to determine whether the concept maps are effective as teaching technology compared to the usual teaching approach without this technology. The research involved 110 elementary school students who were divided into one experimental (E) and one control (C) group. The E group covered programme content related to pollination and pollinators by applying concept maps. The C group was exposed to the same content, without these maps. It is evidenced a difference of the attained knowledge in favour of the experimental group after the introduction of the experimental factor (application of concept maps). The application of concept maps directly contributed to better learning and knowledge acquisition in teaching the biology content Pollination and Pollinators. Based upon the obtained results of this research, concept maps will be further implemented to improve teaching process and the teachers will be gradually trained for the application of this teaching technology. Keywords: concept maps, programme content, pollination, pollinators.
