The article presents the results of a study of treatment short pulses of a high-energy electromagnetic field on samples from zinc. The aim of the work was to study the possibility of healing micropores and microcracks inside the material. The description of the used equipment and experimental methods is given. The obtained experimental data are analyzed. Based on the study of the microstructure of the metal before and after exposure to the field, The assumption is confirmed that under the considered treatment in zinc, there may be a decrease in the damage(porosity) of the material and, as a result, a significant increase in the limit plastic strain before fracture. It is shown that the decrease in porosity is not the result of recrystallization, which practically does not occur under the studied influence.

A new target design is presented to model high-energy radiative accretion shocks in polars. In this paper, we present the experimental results obtained on the GEKKO XII laser facility for the POLAR project. The experimental results are compared with 2D FCI2 simulations to characterize the dynamics and the structure of plasma flow before and after the collision. The good agreement between simulations and experimental data confirms the formation of a reverse shock where cooling losses start modifying the post-shock region. With the multi-material structure of the target, a hydrodynamic collimation is exhibited and a radiative structure coupled with the reverse shock is highlighted in both experimental data and simulations. The flexibility of the laser energy produced on GEKKO XII allowed us to produce high-velocity flows and study new and interesting radiation hydrodynamic regimes between those obtained on the LULI2000 and Orion laser facilities.

Geometry and energy parameters of the individual dissociation intermediate steps of CH4 molecule, parameters of the barrier to linearity and singlet-triplet separation of the CH2 molecule have been calculated by means of the UMP method in the minimum basis set augmented with the bond functions. The results agree well with experimental data except for the geometry of CH2(1A1) and relatively high energy values of CH(2II) and CH2(1A1) where the existence of two UHF solutions indicates a necessity of description of the electronic correlation by more exact methods of quantum chemistry.

A finite element model is proposed to investigate the effect of thickness differential on Limiting Dome Height (LDH) testing of aluminum tailor-welded blanks. The numerical model is validated via comparison of the equivalent plastic strain and displacement distribution between the simulation results and the experimental data. The normalized equivalent plastic strain and normalized LDH values are proposed as a means of quantifying the influence of thickness differential for a variety of different ratios. Increasing thickness differential was found to decrease the normalized equivalent plastic strain and normalized LDH values, this providing an evaluation of blank formability.

The differences between contemporary Monte Carlo generators of high energy hadronic interactions are discussed and their impact on the interpretation of experimental data on ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) is studied. Key directions for further model improvements are outlined. The prospect for a coherent interpretation of the data in terms of the UHECR composition is investigated.

Oscillations of reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) intensities are computed using dynamical diffraction theory. The phase of the oscillations is determined using two different approaches. In the first, direct, approach, the phase is determined by identifying the time needed to reach the second oscillation minimum. In the second approach, the phase is found using harmonic analysis. The two approaches are tested by applying them to oscillations simulated using dynamical diffraction theory. The phase of RHEED oscillations observed experimentally is also analysed. Experimental data on the variation of the phase as a function of the glancing angle of incidence, derived using the direct method, are compared with the values computed using both the direct and harmonic methods. For incident-beam azimuths corresponding to low-symmetry directions, both approaches produce similar results.

The present paper deals with the interactions of 22 Ne and 28 Si nuclei at (4.1–4.5)A GeV /c with emulsion. Some characteristics of the compound multiplicity nc given by the sum of the number of shower particles ns and grey particles ng have been investigated. The present experimental data are compared with the corresponding ones calculated according to modified cascade evaporation model (MCEM). The results reveal that the compound multiplicity distributions for these two reactions are consistent with the corresponding ones of MCEM data. It can also be seen that the peak of these distributions shifts towards a higher value of nc with increasing projectile mass. It may further be seen that the compound multiplicity distributions becomes broader with increasing target size and its width increases with the size of the projectile nucleus. In addition, it has been found that the MCEM can describe the compound multiplicity characteristics of the different projectile, target and the correlation between different emitted particles. The values of average compound multiplicity increase with increasing mass of the projectile. Furthermore, it is observed that while the value of 〈nc〉 depends on the mass number of the projectile Ap and the target mass number At, the value of the ratio 〈nc〉/D(nc) seems to be independent of Ap and At. The impact parameter is found to affect the shape of the compound multiplicity distribution. Finally, the dependence of the average compound multiplicity on the numbers of grey and black particles, and the sum of them, is obvious. The values of the slope have been found to be independent of the projectile nucleus.

The effect of epinephrine (E) infusion on insulin-mediated glucose metabolism in humans has been studied. Eight glucose-tolerant men were studied on two separate occasions: 1) during 120 min of euglycemic hyperinsulinemia (UH, approximately 5 mM; 40 mU.m-2.min-1); and 2) during UH while E was infused (UHE, 0.05 microgram.kg-1.min-1). Biopsies were taken from the quadriceps femoris muscle before and after each clamp. Glucose disposal, correcting for endogenous glucose production, was 36 +/- 3 and 18 +/- 2 (SE) mumol.kg fat-free mass (FFM)-1.min-1 during the last 40 min of UH and UHE, respectively (P less than 0.001). Nonoxidative glucose disposal (presumably glycogenesis) averaged 23.0 +/- 3.0 and 4.0 +/- 1.1 (P less than 0.001), whereas carbohydrate oxidation (which is proportional to glycolysis) averaged 13.1 +/- 1.4 and 15.3 +/- 1.1 mumol.kg FFM-1.min-1 (P less than 0.05) during UH and UHE, respectively. UHE resulted in significantly higher contents of UDP-glucose, hexose monophosphates, postphosphofructokinase intermediates, and glucose 1,6-bisphosphate (G-1,6-P2) in muscle (P less than 0.05-0.001), but there were no significant differences in high-energy phosphates or fructose 2,6-bisphosphate (F-2,6-P2) between treatments. Fractional activities of phosphorylase increased (P less than 0.01), and glycogen synthase decreased (P less than 0.001) during UHE. It is concluded that E inhibits insulin-mediated glycogenesis because of an inactivation of glycogen synthase and an activation of glycogenolysis. E also appears to inhibit insulin-mediated glucose utilization, at least partly, because of an increase in G-6-phosphate (which inhibits hexokinase) and enhances glycolysis by G-1,6-P2-, fructose 6-phosphate-, and F-1,6-P2-mediated activation of PFK.

AbstractThe current article examines two experimental investigations of the syntaxdiscourse interface, which address theoretical questions in different ways: the first is an L1 investigation of Galician speakers in Gupton (2010) and the second is a dual investigation of L1 and L2 Spanish reported on in Leal Méndez & Slabakova (2011). These investigations gathered quantitative data via psycholinguistic tasks with accompanying audio utilizing the WebSurveyor platform. They involved counterbalanced designs and were followed by statistical analysis. While acknowledging that experimental data does not have primacy over intuitive data, the authors endorse the use of experimental methods of data elicitation (such as the ones already used in generative SLA research) in theoretical syntax in order to avoid experimenter bias and to get a more complete picture of native speaker intuition and competencies.
