The creation, implementation and control of an optimal procurement strategy for services and devices of telecommunication is of outstanding importance. On the basic concept of this strategy purchasing of such services and devices as an essential operating resource can be performed. The broadcasting world is currently undergoing a revolution. The new technologies of cable and, more importantly, satellite broadcasting have brought within reach an enormous potential expansion and diversity in broadcasting. The Broadcasting Act 1990 is the government's response to the challenge, creating a mostly new regulatory framework. Alongside technological advance there has been a growing concern with regulating programme quality, as the creation of the Broadcasting Standards Commission (placed by Pt. V of the Act on a statutory footing) bears witness. A minor, but not insignificant, place in these cross-currents of ferment is occupied by religious broadcasting. This article seeks to place the controls and duties relating to religious broadcasting under the new regime within the context of its history in the UK and to consider the extent to which the new legal and administrative controls achieve an acceptable balance between religious expression and control of standards.

Recent studies have challenged the notion that priming for ostensibly novel stimuli such as pseudowords (REAB) reflects the creation of new representations. Priming for such stimuli could instead reflect the activation of familiar memory representations that are orthographically similar (READ) and/or the activation of subparts of stimuli (RE, EX, AR), which are familar because they occur commonly in English. We addressed this issue in three experiments that assessed perceptual identification priming and recognition memory for novel and familiar letter strings in amnesic patients and control subjects. Priming for words, pseudowords, and orthographically illegal nonwords was fully intact in the amnesic patients following a single exposure, whereas recognition memory was impaired for the same items. Thus, priming can occur for stimuli that are unlikely to have preexisting representations. Words and pseudowords exhibited twice as much priming as illegal nonwords, suggesting that activation may contribute to priming for words and wordlike stimuli. Additional results showed that priming for illegal nonwords resulted from the formation of new perceptual associations among the component letters of each nonword rather than the activation of individual letter representations. In summary, the results demonstrate that priming following a single exposure can depend on the creation of new perceptual representations and that such priming is independent of the brain structures essential for declarative memory.

Digital twins offer a unique opportunity to design, test, deploy, monitor, and control real-world robotic processes. In this paper we present a novel, modular digital twinning framework developed for the investigation of safety within collaborative robotic manufacturing processes. The modular architecture supports scalable representations of user-defined cyber-physical environments, and tools for safety analysis and control. This versatile research tool facilitates the creation of mixed environments of Digital Models, Digital Shadows, and Digital Twins, whilst standardising communication and physical system representation across different hardware platforms. The framework is demonstrated as applied to an industrial case-study focused on the safety assurance of a collaborative robotic manufacturing process. We describe the creation of a digital twin scenario, consisting of individual digital twins of entities in the manufacturing case study, and the application of a synthesised safety controller from our wider work. We show how the framework is able to provide adequate evidence to virtually assess safety claims made against the safety controller using a supporting validation module and testing strategy. The implementation, evidence and safety investigation is presented and discussed, raising exciting possibilities for the use of digital twins in robotic safety assurance.

Artificial microbial consortia seek to leverage division-of-labour to optimize function and possess immense potential for bioproduction. Co-culturing approaches, the preferred mode of generating a consortium, remain limited in their ability to give rise to stable consortia having finely tuned compositions. Here, we present an artificial differentiation system in budding yeast capable of generating stable microbial consortia with custom functionalities from a single strain at user-defined composition in space and in time based on optogenetically-driven genetic rewiring. Owing to fast, reproducible, and light-tunable dynamics, our system enables dynamic control of consortia composition in continuous cultures for extended periods. We further demonstrate that our system can be extended in a straightforward manner to give rise to consortia with multiple subpopulations. Our artificial differentiation strategy establishes a novel paradigm for the creation of complex microbial consortia that are simple to implement, precisely controllable, and versatile to use.

This chapter discusses the cult of Pier “Pettinaio” or Pier “the comb-maker” of Siena. Pier lived in Siena until his death in 1289, earning first a pious, and then a saintly reputation for his efforts to follow a rigorous schedule of prayer, to deliver charity to his fellow city-dwellers, and finally to resist the more aggressive commercial practices espoused by other urban artisans and merchants. One sees in Pier's vita how the celebration of a contemporary lay patron became an opportunity to think about the role everyday men and women played in the creation of an ideal civic community. As the vita repeatedly argues, Pier's extraordinary spiritual rigor produced the model of good communal citizenship. But one also sees in this vita an expanded understanding of the content and role of lay charisma. At the same time that the vita celebrates Pier's external actions, it also celebrates his internal focus: his embrace of the contemplative life, his prophetic powers, and his ecstatic states. Thus, in the years immediately before the mendicants took over guardianship and control of the lay penitential life, the cult of a pious Sienese comb-maker demonstrates not only a new equation between the ideal lay Christian and the ideal lay citizen but also an expanded notion of the content and power of lay spirituality.

This chapter examines digitalization as a set of new normative ideals for managing and organizing businesses, enabled by new technologies. The data imperative consists of two mutually reinforcing goals: the pursuit of omniscience—the aspiration of management to capture the world relevant to the company through digital data; and the pursuit of omnipotence—an aspiration of managers to control and optimize activities in real-time and around the world through software. The data imperative model captures a self-reinforcing cycle of four sequential steps: (1) the creation and capture of data, (2) the combination and analysis of data, (3) the redesign of business processes around smart algorithms, and (4) the ability to control the world through digital information flows. The logical end-point of the data imperative is a ‘programmable world’, a conception of society saturated with Internet-connected hardware that is able to capture processes in real time and control them in order to optimize desired outcomes.

In this chapter, the authors show how functional organizations, derived and perpetuated by the Romans, the Church, and the army of Frederick the Great, were ready-at-hand with the emergence of the industrial era and associated with the creation of wealth through a series of subsequent and specialized value-adding steps. This is a typical command and control model. The chapter shows that this is not the only model for wealth creation over the centuries, even though it continues to predominate in contemporary organizations. Relational networks existed throughout the same historical span of time and are undoubtedly responsible for the greatest accumulation of wealth. They often accumulated such a significant amount of wealth that they threatened the legacy models of church and state. Legacy thinking, directly and indirectly, continues to perpetuate questionable assumptions and cognitive blindness about how work really gets done and how wealth is really created.

Abstract Background In the majority of patients, the areas of the intestine affected in Crohn’s disease (CD) are the terminal ileum and less commonly the rectum. The terminal ileum is affected in the majority of genetic animal models of CD as well. Additionally, CD recurs at sites of tight anastomosis or strictures postoperatively. These observations lead to the assumption that increased intraluminal pressure related to the presence of a valve, sphincter or stenosis is associated with CD pathogenesis. We investigated the hypothesis that the creation of a partial intestinal stenosis could have an impact on disease severity, in a genetic animal model of CD (TNFΔare/+). TNFΔare/+ mice overexpress TNFα leading to a Crohn-like colitis in the terminal ileum. Methods Twenty-nine TNFΔare/+ mice, 6 weeks old, were divided into three intervention groups: stenosis, sham and control. In the stenosis group (n = 11), a partial small bowel obstruction was created via a novel triple suture technique, approximately 3 cm from the ileocecal valve. In the control group (n = 9), a loose single suture was placed at the aforementioned site to test the direct effect of the foreign material on the intestinal wall. The sham group (n = 9) received a sham operation. The triple suture stenosis was also performed on wild-type (WT) C57BL/6 mice (group WT, n = 9). 6 weeks post-surgery all animals were sacrificed and samples from the ileum 3 cm proximal and 3 cm distal to the intervention site were collected for histopathological evaluation. The Crohn-like changes were assessed using a modified colitis histological scoring system (based on Katakura et al., JCI 2005; 115: 695–702). Results Proximal to the intervention, the mean colitis score of stenosis group (10.18 ± 0.87) was significantly higher compared with sham (6.33 ± 0.97, p: 0.009) and control group (5.00 ± 0.91, p: 0.001). There was no difference between sham and control group (p: 0.332). No significant differences between the groups were reported distal to the intervention. The triple suture technique led to Crohn-like inflammatory lesions only in the TNFΔare/+ mice, as shown from the significantly increased score compared with WT mice proximal and distal to the stenosis (10.18 ± 0.87 vs. 0.67 ± 0.37, p < 0.001 and 9.20 ± 1.09 vs. 0.33 ± 0.24, p < 0.001). Conclusion The creation of a stenotic segment in the intestine of TNFΔare/+ mice, led to higher colitis score than expected. The probable mechanism is the increased intraluminal pressure proximal to the stenosis. This suggests that mechanical forces contribute as important co-factors in the pathophysiology of CD, in genetically predisposed populations.
