e paper seeks to address some questions connected to the conflict between the very nature of sacred places like mount Taishan in China and the contemporary phenomenon of culture industry which has its intrinsic value in exploitation of the national history and culture with the purpose of ensuring economical profit for the state. The author traces the roots and the historical development of the worship of mount Taishan into an emblematic universal symbol of Chineseness and points to possible problematic connection between this symbol and the clear profit-making purpose of one concrete project of the culture industry in PRC – the “Culture Industry Park of Mount Taishan”, whose realization started in 2009. As a meaningful focus of the whole project the landscape mega-spectacle “Chinese Taishan: The Great Sacrifice to Heaven and Earth” is examined through its official media covering and the feedback of the spectators. The paper finds that the promoted “harmony” between the history of the sacred mount Taishan and the contemporary mundane use of it as a cultural resource contains potential dramatical developments.

Abstract Adachi Mineichirō was the first non-European and the first Asian President of the Permanent Court of International Justice (1931–1934). This review article introduces the first substantial study of Adachi, focusing on his path of ‘becoming’ one of a few leading international jurists with non-Euro-American backgrounds in his period. This review essay demonstrates that by examining this Japanese diplomat and jurist, the book, written in Japanese, contributes to the debates on the history of international law in two significant ways. First, it reveals the fundamental issues in the development of the international judicial system, namely the nature of international jurists, empires and the principle of the equality of national sovereignty, and the significance of the roles of non-Euro-American actors in shaping the system. Secondly, it demonstrates the necessity of the inter-disciplinary collaboration between international law, international history and specific regional and national history, as well as methodological challenges in evaluating the historical development of the system.

In both China and Greece, history initially emerged as a mode of discourse closely related to the state. With the rise of comparative global history, however, historians have severed this link, providing scholars of gender with novel tools and perspectives for investigating their subject. Specialists in trans-national history have reflected deeply on the uses and methodology of their pursuit, and their conclusions provide useful guidance for historians of gender who venture beyond national borders. Three studies comparing gender conditions in China with ancient Greece and Persia provide practical case studies on how this sort of research can be conducted, and what sort of contributions it might yield.

Ras a1 Khaimah is the most northerly of the seven states comprising the United Arab Emirates and its Ruler, H. H. Sheikh Saqr bin Mohammad al-Qasimi, is keenly interested in the history of the state and its people. Survey carried out there jointly with Dr D. B. Doe in 1968 had focused attention on the site of JuIfar which lies just north of the present town of Ras a1 Khaimah (de Cardi, 1971, 230-2). Julfar was in existence in Abbasid times and its importance as an entrep6t during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries-the Portuguese Period-is reflected by the quantity and variety of imported wares to be found among the ruins of the city. Most of the sites discovered during the survey dated from that period but a group of cairns near Ghalilah and some long gabled graves in the Shimal area to the north-east of the date-groves behind Ras a1 Khaimah (map, FIG. I) clearly represented a more distant past.
