BackgroundAs the world’s second-largest economy, China has launched health reforms for the second time and invested significant funding in medical informatics (MI) since 2010; however, few studies have been conducted on the outcomes of this ambitious cause.ObjectiveThis study analyzed the features of major MI meetings held in China and compared them with similar MI conferences in the United States, aiming at informing researchers on the outcomes of MI in China and the US from the professional conference perspective and encouraging greater international cooperation for the advancement of the field of medical informatics in China and, ultimately, the promotion of China’s health reform.MethodsQualitative and quantitative analyses of four MI meetings in China (i.e., CMIAAS, CHINC, CHITEC, and CPMI) and two in the US (i.e., AMIA and HIMSS) were conducted. Furthermore, the size, constituent parts and regional allocation of participants, topics, and fields of research for each meeting were determined and compared.ResultsFrom 1985 to 2016, approximately 45,000 individuals attended the CMIAAS and CPMI (academic), CHINC and CHITEC (industry), resulting in 5,085 documented articles. In contrast, in 2015, 38,000 and 3,700 individuals, respectively, attended the American HIMSS (industry) and AMIA (academic) conferences and published 1,926 papers in the latter. Compared to those of HIMSS in 2015, the meeting duration of Chinese industry CHITEC was 3 vs. 5 days, the number of vendors was 100 vs. 1,500+, the number of sub-forums was 10 vs. 250; while compared to those of AMIA, the meeting duration of Chinese CMIAAS was 2 vs. 8 days, the number of vendors was 5 vs. 65+, the number of sub-forums was 4 vs. 26. HIMSS and AMIA were more open, international, and comprehensive in comparison to the aforementioned Chinese conferences.ConclusionsThe current MI in China can be characterized as “hot in industry application, and cold in academic research.” Taking into consideration the economic scale together with the huge investment in MI, conference yield and attendee diversity are still low in China. This study demonstrates an urgent necessity to elevate the medical informatics discipline in China and to expand research fields in order to maintain pace with the development of medical informatics in the US and other countries.

AbstractThis article explores the US contribution to the illegal transatlantic slave trade to Brazil and the tensions generated by this hemispheric connection in the mid-nineteenth century. It combines qualitative and quantitative approaches, based on diplomatic records and Voyages: The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade Database, in order to assess the size and variety of forms of US participation in the traffic to Brazil. More generally, the article examines the tensions caused by the rise of abolitionism and the limits to the enforcement of anti-slave trade legislation in the free trade international environment that emerged after the Napoleonic Wars. By framing the attitudes of the US government within a broader Atlantic context, this work shows why certain forms of US participation in the contraband slave trade (such as providing US-built ships) became more predominant than others (such as directly financing and organising slave voyages) by the mid-nineteenth century.

AbstractPolyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was used to study esterase variation in a population of B-type Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius). A total of six esterases was identified within an overall B-type pattern. However, both qualitative and quantitative variation in some of these esterases gave three clearly defined phenotypes. One of these lacked esterase E0.14 which until now has been the key band used to classify B-type strains electrophoretically. A strain homozygous for the E0.14 null allele (B-Null) retained the ability to induce squash silverleaf, a plant physiological disorder which hitherto has only ever been associated with whitefly strains possessing this band.

This paper investigates the cross-correlations between the foreign flows in A-share market and the uncertainties of market, economy, and policy in home markets, namely, the VIX index and the US EPU index. By employing the cross-correlation statistics and MF-DCCA method, we find the existence of the cross-correlations between the foreign flows and the VIX index, the foreign flows, and the US EPU index from qualitative and quantitative perspectives, respectively. For the cross-correlation between the foreign flows and VIX, small fluctuations are persistent, while large fluctuations are antipersistent. In contrast, the cross-correlation between the foreign flows and US EPU is antipersistent and steady. These results are robust by dividing the foreign flows into two parts in Shenzhen and Shanghai stock exchanges, respectively, and by shortening the periods to after the implementation of Shenzhen-Hong Kong Stock Connect.
