ABSTRACT This paper explores the challenges involved with the recovery of oil from a discharge canal with limited access and high relative currents. In March 1999, a sheen was observed in the cooling water discharge canal of Consolidated Edison's 2.5-million kilowatt generating station in Queens (New York City), New York At the time the sheen was discovered, the entire station had been shut down for several months for a maintenance outage. As the tide rose and fell in the East River, into which the discharge canal emptied, the oil sheen moved in and out of a 1,000-foot long tunnel connecting the generating station to the canal. The major challenges to the recovery and removal of the oil sheen were: (1) the low over head of the discharge tunnel and canal support girders, which prevented getting a skimmer into the tunnel and canal; (2) the high discharge rate of the station's cooling water pump; and (3) skimming the sheen in a 3-to 5-knot current. Consolidated Edison is a member of Clean Harbors Cooperative, L.L.C, which was brought in to remove the sheen. This was accomplished utilizing two JBF Scientific DIP Belt Skimmers, which were set up parallel to the current flow, and deflection booming.

Warm water discharge from nuclear power plant will elevate the temperature of seawater and may subsequently have influences on important marine aquiculture bivalves. In present study, the effects of temperature elevation caused by warm water discharge on the filtration behavior, calcification rate, and ammonia excretion of a major local bivalve species, razor clam, were investigated via laboratory simulation. The results showed that the filtration rates of razor clam increased significantly with an increased temperature, which were 0.46±0.06, 0.62±0.09, and 0.85±0.08L/g·h for 28 °C, 30 °C, and 32 °C, respectively. Under the experimental temperature gradient, the pattern of calcification rates of razor clam was shown to be bell-shaped, with the highest calcification rate 2.85±0.28μmol/FWg·h at 30 °C. The ammonia excretion rates were shown to increase slightly with increased temperature, which were 0.31±0.03, 0.32±0.09, and 0.34±0.06mg/ g·h for 28 °C, 30 °C, and 32 °C, respectively. The results suggest that razor clam will increase its energy intake and metabolic rate to maintain a relatively constant growth rate under thermal stress within 4 oC range even during the summer season.

Micro Hydro Power (MHP) Plant is a small-scale power plant under 100 kW. Generally, MHP is built in a place that the electricity network has not touched. Many waterfalls in Taji Village are only used as tourist attractions. One of them is Coban Jahe waterfall which has a water discharge of 0.60567 m3/s in the dry season. Waterfall in Coban Jahe was used and planned as Micro Hydro Power Plant, it was called as MHP. Potential electric power generated from the MHP Coban Jahe Waterfall is 14.0368 kW with an effective head of 3.4742 m. The results show from the financial analysis, the construction of MHP is quite feasible with NPV of Rp. 45,676,769, BCR of 1.0852, which means it is feasible to be continued, the Payback Period is 9 years which does not exceed the project life, and the IRR obtained is 10,0087% which the projects are feasible and profitable to build.
