Youth participants in 4-H animal science projects are involved extensively with raising and exhibiting agricultural animals, often on backyard farms (Smith and Meehan 2012). Since backyard farms can serve as sources and vectors of pathogens (FAO 1999; WHO 2011), it is critical that 4-H youth take an active role in preventing the introduction and spread of economically important animal diseases. Fifteen 4-H youth from two counties in California participated in the 4-H Bio-Security Proficiencies Program, a long-term community and citizen science project focused on animal and zoonotic disease risk education and mitigation. Then, in the role of community science experts, they acted upon the risk assessments and mitigation plans they had developed to improve biosecurity practices and reduce the likelihood of disease spread on their home premises and at their local county fair. They also extended their knowledge to the broader livestock exhibition community through outreach videos.

Abstract When people are confronted with feedback that counters their prior beliefs, they preferentially rely on desirable rather than undesirable feedback in belief updating, i.e. an optimism bias. In two pre-registered EEG studies employing an adverse life event probability estimation task, we investigated the neurocognitive processes that support the formation and the change of optimism biases in immediate and 24 h delayed tests. We found that optimistic belief updating biases not only emerged immediately but also became significantly larger after 24 h, suggesting an active role of valence-dependent offline consolidation processes in the change of optimism biases. Participants also showed optimistic memory biases: they were less accurate in remembering undesirable than desirable feedback probabilities, with inferior memories of undesirable feedback associated with lower belief updating in the delayed test. Examining event-related brain potentials (ERPs) revealed that desirability of feedback biased initial encoding: desirable feedback elicited larger P300s than undesirable feedback, with larger P300 amplitudes predicting both higher belief updating and memory accuracies. These results suggest that desirability of feedback could bias both online and offline memory-related processes such as encoding and consolidation, with both processes contributing to the formation and change of optimism biases.

Recently, Henneberger and colleagues blocked hippocampal long-term synaptic potentiation (LTP) induction by “clamping” intracellular calcium concentration of individual CA1 astrocytes, suggesting calcium-dependent gliotransmitter release from astocytes plays a role in hippocampal LTP induction. However, using transgenic mice to manipulate astrocytic calcium, Agulhon and colleagues demonstrated no effect on LTP induction. Until the question of how intracellular calcium causes gliotransmitter release is answered, the role of astrocytes in synaptic plasticity will be incompletely understood.

Customers expect certain characteristics from long-term savings products. Providers are not able to supply all of these characteristics in one product at the same time. In addition, there are changing attitudes of the savers and the requirements to the financial institutions are evolving. The paper is analyzing the customers’ expectations from the long-term savings products. The manuscript is searching answer which are the most important characteristics of the savings products from the point of view of the client. The research is focused on three main areas: which are the customers’ expectations; what is the current environment in the market of savings products and what developments can we expect in the coming years. One of the conclusions is that the providers have to adapt their products to the customers’ expectations in order to succeed and to reach further development of the markets. Another conclusion is that customer centric products will gain greater trust among potential savers. We believe that the successful saving product has to be simple, transparent and cost-efficient. This reflects the surrounding environment of low interest rates, ageing population, increased informational flow, digitalization and alternative products development. To support the savers and the providers it is needed public help, targeting good coverage and constant efforts for active role of the stakeholders in the savings process.

AbstractBackgroundTick-borne diseases have been increasing at the local, national, and global levels. Researchers studying ticks and tick-borne disease need a thorough knowledge of the pathogens, vectors, and epidemiology of disease spread. Three surveillance approaches are commonly used to provide insight into tick-borne disease risk: human disease case surveillance, active tick surveillance, and passive tick surveillance. Long-term passive surveillance can provide up-to-date data on the spatial variability and temporal dynamics of ectoparasite communities and shed light into the ecology of rarer tick species. We present a retrospective analysis on compiled data of ticks from Pennsylvania over the last 117 years.MethodsWe compiled data from ticks collected during tick surveillance research, and from citizen-based submissions to the Penn State University Department of Entomology (PSUEnt). Specimens were deposited at the PSUEnt arthropod collections that eventually became The Frost Entomological Museum. While most of the specimens were submitted by the public, a subset of the data were collected through active methods (flagging or dragging, or removal of ticks from wildlife). We analyzed all data from 1900-2017 for tick community composition, host associations, and spatio-temporal dynamics.ResultsIn total there were 4,491 submission lots consisting of 7,132 tick specimens. Twenty-four different species were identified, with the large proportion of submissions represented by five tick species. We observed a shift in tick community composition in which the dominant species of tick (Ixodes cookei) was overtaken in abundance byDermacentor variabilisin the early 1990s, and then replaced in abundance byI. scapularis. We analyzed host data and identified overlaps in host range amongst tick species, suggesting potential hubs of pathogen transfer between different tick vectors and their reservoir hosts.ConclusionsWe highlight the importance of long-term passive tick surveillance in investigating the ecology of both common and rare tick species. Information on the geographic distribution, host-association, and seasonality of the tick community can help researchers and health-officials to identify high-risk areas.

Preeclampsia is a worldwide pregnancy complication with serious short and long-term maternal and neonatal consequences. Our understanding of preeclampsia pathophysiology has significantly evolved over the last decades with the recognition that impaired arterial function and structure may occur early in the course of pregnancy, preceding the clinic-humoral syndrome and driving long-term cardiovascular disease risk in the future of these patients. Although an early abnormal placentation may be the inciting event for a large proportion of cases, there is growing evidence that challenges the placental hypothesis in all affected women, since placental histopathology lesions thought to be characteristic are neither sensitive nor specific markers for the disorder. Recent hemodynamic investigations and studies on left ventricular function and structure in women with preeclampsia further challenge this universal paradigm and propose that placental dysfunction could be secondary to a maternal cardiovascular maladaptation to pregnancy in certain patients. Supporting this hypothesis, certain vascular features, which are characteristically enhanced in normal pregnancy allowing a healthy vascular adaptation are absent in preeclampsia and comparable to the non-pregnant population. However, arterial biomechanics in preeclampsia may only not cope with hemodynamic demands of pregnancy, but also impose additional detrimental loads to the maternal heart ("impaired left-ventricle-aorta coupling") and transmit pressure and flow disturbances into the fetoplacental circulation ("impaired large arteries-microcirculation coupling"). In this review, we analyze the major role of the arterial dysfunction in the cardiovascular maladaptation hypothesis of preeclampsia, shed light on its potential etiopathogenic link and discuss the complementary nature of the placental and cardiovascular theories.

The Secretary-General is appointed by the General Assembly upon the recommendation of the Security Council. Due to the veto power of the permanent members, lack of transparency and the recommendation of only one candidate, the appointment of the Secretary-General is basically a decision of the Security Council. UN member states, civil society organizations and schoolars point out the need for a more active role of the General Assembly during the appointment of the Secretary-General. Formation of the ad hoc working group for the revitalization of the work of the General Assembly raised this problem to a higher level. Current procedure of appointment of the Secretary-General was reasonable at the time of the adoption of the UN Charter. The circumstances of the 21st century require different solutions. The paper aims to show the necessity and possibilities of strengthening the role of the General Assembly in the process of appointment of the Secretary-General and obstacles existing in this regard. The long-term activities of the ad hoc working group for the revitalization of the work of the General Assembly gave positive results in terms of more active role of the General Assembly during the appointment of the Secretary General in 2016. The paper aims to show that the results achieved by the ad hoc working group are not long-term efficient. The most effective solution for strengthening the role of the General Assembly in the appointment of the Secretary-General is the revision of the UN Charter.

Recent interest in bone marrow (BM) transplantation in nonconditioned or minimally conditioned recipients warrants investigation of homing patterns of transplanted hematopoietic progenitor cells (HPCs) in irradiated and nonirradiated recipients. To this end, phenotypically defined populations of BM cells were tracked in lethally irradiated or nonirradiated mice at 1, 3, 6, and 24 hours after transplantation. Recovery of transplanted cells at all time points was higher in BM of nonirradiated mice, similar to earlier suggestions. The percentage of lineage-negative Sca-1+cells and Sca-1+ cells expressing CD43, CD49e, and CD49d steadily increased in BM of nonirradiated mice up to 24 hours, while fluctuating in irradiated mice. Cell cycle status and BrdU incorporation revealed that less than 20% of Sca-1+ cells and fewer Sca-1+lin− cells had cycled by 24 hours after transplantation. To more directly examine trafficking of primitive HPCs, purified grafts of CD62L− or CD49e+ subfractions of Sca-1+lin−cells, previously shown to be enriched for long-term repopulating cells, also were tracked in vivo. Recovery of purified cells was similarly increased in BM of nonirradiated mice. When 50 to 100 of these BM-homed cells were examined in serial transplantation studies, BM-homed cells from initially nonirradiated mice were enriched 5- to 30-fold for cells capable of long-term hematopoiesis in secondary recipients. Collectively, these data suggest that homing or survival of transplanted cells in irradiated recipients is less efficient than that in nonirradiated recipients, implicating an active role of radiation-sensitive microenvironmental cues in the homing process. These results may have important clinical implications in the design of BM transplantation protocols.

Background: Nutrition status prior to conception and during pregnancy and infancy seems to have an influence on the disease risk in adulthood (early nutrition/developmental programming). We aimed to review the current knowledge on the role of micronutrients in early nutrition programming and its implications for healthcare. Summary of Findings: Globally and even in high-income countries where a balanced diet is generally accessible, an inadequate maternal micronutrient status is common. This may induce health problems in the mother and foetus/newborn both immediately and in later life. Pregnant women and those who may become pregnant should aim to achieve a satisfactory micronutrient status from a well-balanced diet, and where necessary from additional supplements. Key Messages: We emphasise the need for a call to action for healthcare providers and policymakers to better educate women of child-bearing age regarding the short- and long-term benefits of an appropriate micronutrient status. The role of micronutrient status in early nutrition programming needs to be emphasized more to address the still limited awareness of the potential long-term health repercussions of suboptimal micronutrient supply during pregnancy.

Spectrin is a membrane associated protein most of which properties have been tentatively elucidated. A main role of the protein has been assumed to give a supporting structure to inside of the membrane. As reported previously, however, the isolated spectrin molecule underwent self assemble to form such as fibrous, meshwork, dispersed or aggregated arrangements depending upon the buffer suspended and was suggested to play an active role in the membrane conformational changes. In this study, the role of spectrin and actin was examined in terms of the molecular arrangements on the erythrocyte membrane surface with correlation to the functional states of the ghosts.Human erythrocyte ghosts were prepared from either freshly drawn or stocked bank blood by the method of Dodge et al with a slight modification as described before. Anti-spectrin antibody was raised against rabbit by injection of purified spectrin and partially purified.

It has been almost universally adopted that dissolution of solids proceeds with development of uniform, continuous frontiers of reaction.However this point of view is doubtful / 1 /. E.g. we have proved the active role of the block (grain) boundaries in the main phases of cement, these boundaries being the areas of hydrate phases' nucleation / 2 /. It has brought to the supposition that the dissolution frontier of cement particles in water is discrete. It seems also probable that the dissolution proceeds through the channels, which serve both for the liquid phase movement and for the drainage of the incongruant solution products. These channels can be appeared along the block boundaries.In order to demonsrate it, we have offered the method of phase-contrast impregnation of the hardened cement paste with the solution of methyl metacrylahe and benzoyl peroxide. The viscosity of this solution is equal to that of water.
