Abstract In recent years, in Nepal, while some languages of the nation are on the verge of extinction, some foreign languages (such as Japanese, Korean, Chinese) are emerging as new attractions among the youths and adults and are widely taught in the marketplaces through the private sector initiative. Against this backdrop, in this article, we have examined the current foreign language teaching and learning situation drawing on qualitative empirical data obtained from the institutes involved in foreign language instruction in a city in Gandaki Province of Nepal. The data were collected from a survey in forty institutes, ten individual interviews and five focus group discussions. Drawing on the data, an ecological model was adopted, which focused on dynamic interaction, co-existence, and competition among languages, and findings were discussed in line with these aspects of ecological understanding. Findings revealed that learning foreign languages has been established as a conduit towards economic gains and opportunities for employment and education, which has largely been contributory towards reshaping the ecological relationship among the foreign languages in Nepal.

The most used biomass are wood, sugar cane, paper, rice husk, and peanut. Based on the concept of sustainability and waste reduction, the full utilization of biomass is an alternative capable of providing people with a better nutritional intake, improving the economy related to biomass and the ecological relationship between man and the environment. So, the aim of this work was the sustainable use the biomass, the peanut, through multiple unit operations. Thus, the material went through several processes as the grinding process, where it was possible to obtain immediate analysis data (moisture content, ash content, volatile content and fixed carbon) and particle size. Then, drying was performed employing solar energy and the drying efficiency was obtained. Infrared and greenhouse tests were performed in the laboratory to determine the drying and humidity curves. After drying, it was also carried out the oil extraction using ethanol as solvent heated by solar energy. After that, the residual cake was used as the adsorbent material in the dye removal by adsorption in a fixed bed. So, the dye-impregnated adsorbent has undergone a process of pyrolysis in order to form fine coal, bio-oil, and gases. With products and by-products of each process, it was possible to generate the infrared spectrum of each. Therefore, it is shown how the integral use of peanut as biomass is possible, using chemical engineering sustainable processes, and how it may contribute to the reduction of the pollution and to the reduction of waste production.

Understanding the relationship between humans and elephants is of particular interest for reducing conflict and encouraging coexistence. This paper reviews the ecological relationship between humans and Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) in the rainforests of the Malay Peninsula, examining the extent of differentiation of spatio-temporal and trophic niches. We highlight the strategies that people and elephants use to partition an overlapping fundamental niche. When elephants are present, forest-dwelling people often build above-the-ground shelters; and when people are present, elephants avoid open areas during the day. People are able to access several foods that are out of reach of elephants or inedible; for example, people use water to leach poisons from tubers of wild yams, use blowpipes to kill arboreal game, and climb trees to access honey. We discuss how the transition to agriculture affected the human–elephant relationship by increasing the potential for competition. We conclude that the traditional foraging cultures of the Malay Peninsula are compatible with wildlife conservation.

Free-ranging ticks are widely known to be restricted to the ground level of vegetation. Here, we document the capture of the tick species Amblyomma tapirellum in light traps placed in the forest canopy of Barro Colorado Island, central Panama. A total of forty eight adults and three nymphs were removed from carbon dioxide–octenol baited CDC light traps suspended 20 meters above the ground during surveys for forest canopy mosquitoes. To our knowledge, this represents the first report of questing ticks from the canopy of tropical forests. Our finding suggests a novel ecological relationship between A. tapirellum and arboreal mammals, perhaps monkeys that come to the ground to drink or to feed on fallen fruits.

AbstractThe shoot beetlesTomicus minor, Tomicus yunnanensis, andTomicus brevipilosushave been decimatingPinus yunnanensistrees for more than 30 years in Southwestern China. To understand the chemical ecological relationship between pines andTomicus, and among the three beetle species, we compared the attraction of these beetles to damaged shoots, extracts from damaged shoots, and volatiles from damaged shoots collected by the dynamic headspace sampling method. Experiments were performed using a modified open-arena olfactometer. The maleT. minorand both sexes ofT. brevipilosuswere more strongly attracted to damaged shoots than to undamaged shoots and they showed attraction to shoots damaged by the same species. FemaleT. minorand both sexes ofT. yunnanensiswere attracted to shoots damaged by femaleT. brevipilosus. The three beetle species were attracted to shoot extracts and dynamic headspace volatiles from shoots damaged by the same species and sex. FemaleT. minorand maleT. yunnanensiswere also attracted to dynamic headspace volatiles from shoots damaged by both sexes ofT. brevipilosus. The results suggested that specific semiochemicals that are induced or produced byT. brevipilosusalso attractT. minorandT. yunnanensis. The semiochemicals in damaged shoots affect the attraction of the three beetle species and play an important chemical communication role in weakening the host trees during the beetles’ shoot-feeding phase.

AbstractThe length of record (LOR) method is an evaluation method that provides quantitative advice for the amount of computational data required for use of the indicators of hydrological alteration (IHA). The use of multi-index hydrological indicators to reflect river hydrological–ecological characteristics is the essence of the IHA method, while the LOR evaluation result using a single index does not have practical application value in the absence of IHA data volume. In this paper, we expand the LOR method from single index version into multi-index version, apply it to comprehensively analyze the credibility of hydrological alteration (HA) multi-indicators under different data volumes, and explore the relationship between multi-index LOR results and data requirements. Combined with the hydrological–ecological relationship, the practical application criteria of LOR dimension reduction under the condition of multiple HA indicators is given. The results show that the LOR results corresponding to each group of indicators in IHA have different data requirements, so an in-depth understanding of the hydrological–ecological relationship is the key to LOR's application of IHA data dimension reduction. In addition, we discuss the limitations of the LOR method of multi-index dimension reduction and its application value in IHA calculations.
