Recently, by the Riordan identity related to tree enumerations, \begin{align*} \sum_{k=0}^{n}\binom{n}{k}(k+1)!(n+1)^{n-k} = (n+1)^{n+1}, \end{align*} Sun and Xu have derived another analogous one, \begin{align*} \sum_{k=0}^{n}\binom{n}{k}D_{k+1}(n+1)^{n-k} = n^{n+1}, \end{align*} where $D_{k}$ is the number of permutations with no fixed points on $\{1,2,\dots, k\}$. In the paper, we utilize the $\lambda$-factorials of $n$, defined by Eriksen, Freij and W$\ddot{a}$stlund, to give a unified generalization of these two identities. We provide for it a combinatorial proof by the functional digraph theory and two algebraic proofs. Using the umbral representation of our generalized identity and Abel's binomial formula, we deduce several properties for $\lambda$-factorials of $n$ and establish interesting relations between the generating functions of general and exponential types for any sequence of numbers or polynomials.

AbstractIn this paper we present a combinatorial proof of an identity involving the two kinds of Stirling numbers and the numbers of permutations with prescribed numbers of excedances and cycles. Several recurrence relations related to the numbers of excedances, fixed points and cycles are also obtained.

The discrete-time G/GI/∞ queue model is explored. Jobs arrive to an infinite-server queuing system following an arbitrary input process X; job sizes are general independent and identically distributed random variables. The system's output process Y (of job departures) and queue process N (tracking the number of jobs present in the system) are analyzed. Various statistics of the stochastic maps X↦ Y and X↦ N are explicitly obtained, including means, variances, autocovariances, cross-covariances, and multidimensional probability generating functions. In the case of stationary inputs, we further compute the spectral densities of the stochastic maps, characterize the fixed points (in the L2 sense) of the input–output map, precisely determine when the output and queue processes display either short-ranged or long-ranged temporal dependencies, and prove a decomposition result regarding the intrinsic L2 structure of general stationary G/GI/∞ systems.

Extending the notion of pattern avoidance in permutations, we study matchings and set partitions whose arc diagram representation avoids a given configuration of three arcs. These configurations, which generalize $3$-crossings and $3$-nestings, have an interpretation, in the case of matchings, in terms of patterns in full rook placements on Ferrers boards. We enumerate $312$-avoiding matchings and partitions, obtaining algebraic generating functions, in contrast with the known D-finite generating functions for the $321$-avoiding (i.e., $3$-noncrossing) case. Our approach provides a more direct proof of a formula of Bóna for the number of $1342$-avoiding permutations. We also give a bijective proof of the shape-Wilf-equivalence of the patterns $321$ and $213$ which greatly simplifies existing proofs by Backelin-West-Xin and Jelínek, and provides an extension of work of Gouyou-Beauchamps for matchings with fixed points. Finally, we classify pairs of patterns of length 3 according to shape-Wilf-equivalence, and enumerate matchings and partitions avoiding a pair in most of the resulting equivalence classes.

A point q in a contact manifold is called a translated point for a contactomorphism ϕ with respect to some fixed contact form if ϕ(q) and q belong to the same Reeb orbit and the contact form is preserved at q. The problem of existence of translated points has an interpretation in terms of Reeb chords between Legendrian submanifolds, and can be seen as a special case of the problem of leafwise coisotropic intersections. For a compactly supported contactomorphism ϕ of ℝ2n+1 or ℝ2n × S1 contact isotopic to the identity, existence of translated points follows immediately from Chekanov's theorem on critical points of quasi-functions and Bhupal's graph construction. In this article we prove that if ϕ is positive then there are infinitely many nontrivial geometrically distinct iterated translated points, i.e. translated points of some iteration ϕk. This result can be seen as a (partial) contact analog of the result of Viterbo on existence of infinitely many iterated fixed points for compactly supported Hamiltonian symplectomorphisms of ℝ2n, and is obtained with generating functions techniques.

Some of the classical orthogonal polynomials such as Hermite, Laguerre, Charlier, etc. have been shown to be the generating polynomials for certain combinatorial objects. These combinatorial interpretations are used to prove new identities and generating functions involving these polynomials. In this paper we apply Foata's approach to generating functions for the Hermite polynomials to obtain a triple lacunary generating function. We define renormalized Hermite polynomials $h_n(u)$ by $$\sum_{n= 0}^\infty h_n(u) {z^n\over n!}=e^{uz+{z^2\!/2}}.$$ and give a combinatorial proof of the following generating function: $$ \sum_{n= 0}^\infty h_{3n}(u) {{z^n\over n!}}= {e^{(w-u)(3u-w)/6}\over\sqrt{1-6wz}} \sum_{n= 0}^\infty {{(6n)!\over 2^{3n}(3n)!(1-6wz)^{3n}} {z^{2n}\over(2n)!}}, $$ where $w=(1-\sqrt{1-12uz})/6z=uC(3uz)$ and $C(x)=(1-\sqrt{1-4x})/(2x)$ is the Catalan generating function. We also give an umbral proof of this generating function.

This chapter contains a proof of the Arnold conjecture for the standard torus, which is based on the discrete symplectic action. The symplectic part of this proof is very easy. However, for completeness of the exposition, one section is devoted to a fairly detailed discussion of the relevant Conley index theory and of Ljusternik–Schnirelmann theory. Closely related to the problem of finding symplectic fixed points is the Lagrangian intersection problem. The chapter outlines a proof of Arnold’s conjecture for cotangent bundles that again uses the discrete symplectic action, this time to construct generating functions for Lagrangian submanifolds. The chapter ends with a brief outline of the construction and applications of Floer homology.

We prove the unimodality of some coloured$q$-Eulerian polynomials, which involve the flag excedances, the major index and the fixed points on coloured permutation groups, via two recurrence formulas. In particular, we confirm a recent conjecture of Mongelli about the unimodality of the flag excedances over type B derangements. Furthermore, we find the coloured version of Gessel’s hook factorisation, which enables us to interpret these two recurrences combinatorially. We also provide a combinatorial proof of a symmetric and unimodal expansion for the coloured derangement polynomial, which was first established by Shin and Zeng using continued fractions.

AbstractWe study the restrictions, the strict fixed points, and the strict quotients of the partition complex $|\Pi_{n}|$ | Π n | , which is the $\Sigma_{n}$ Σ n -space attached to the poset of proper nontrivial partitions of the set $\{1,\ldots,n\}$ { 1 , … , n } .We express the space of fixed points $|\Pi_{n}|^{G}$ | Π n | G in terms of subgroup posets for general $G\subset \Sigma_{n}$ G ⊂ Σ n and prove a formula for the restriction of $|\Pi_{n}|$ | Π n | to Young subgroups $\Sigma_{n_{1}}\times \cdots\times \Sigma_{n_{k}}$ Σ n 1 × ⋯ × Σ n k . Both results follow by applying a general method, proven with discrete Morse theory, for producing equivariant branching rules on lattices with group actions.We uncover surprising links between strict Young quotients of $|\Pi_{n}|$ | Π n | , commutative monoid spaces, and the cotangent fibre in derived algebraic geometry. These connections allow us to construct a cofibre sequence relating various strict quotients $|\Pi_{n}|^{\diamond} \mathbin {\operatorname* {\wedge }_{\Sigma_{n}}^{}} (S^{\ell})^{\wedge n}$ | Π n | ⋄ ∧ Σ n ( S ℓ ) ∧ n and give a combinatorial proof of a splitting in derived algebraic geometry.Combining all our results, we decompose strict Young quotients of $|\Pi_{n}|$ | Π n | in terms of “atoms” $|\Pi_{d}|^{\diamond} \mathbin {\operatorname* {\wedge }_{\Sigma_{d}}^{}} (S^{\ell})^{\wedge d}$ | Π d | ⋄ ∧ Σ d ( S ℓ ) ∧ d for $\ell$ ℓ odd and compute their homology. We thereby also generalise Goerss’ computation of the algebraic André-Quillen homology of trivial square-zero extensions from $\mathbf {F}_{2}$ F 2 to $\mathbf {F}_{p}$ F p for $p$ p an odd prime.

Peter Borwein has conjectured that certain polynomials have non-negative coefficients. In this paper we look at some generalizations of this conjecture and observe how they relate to the study of generating functions for partitions with prescribed hook differences. A combinatorial proof of the generating function for partitions with prescribed hook differences is given.

Recently, Jelínek derived  that the number of self-dual interval orders of reduced size $n$ is twice the number of row-Fishburn matrices of size $n$ by using generating functions. In this paper, we present a bijective proof of this relation by establishing a bijection between two variations of upper-triangular matrices of nonnegative integers. Using the bijection, we provide a combinatorial proof  of the refined relations between self-dual Fishburn matrices and row-Fishburn matrices in answer to a problem proposed by Jelínek.
