In this paper, we study pattern-avoidance in the set of words over the alphabet $[k]$. We say that a word $w\in[k]^n$ contains a pattern $\tau\in[\ell]^m$, if $w$ contains a subsequence order-isomorphic to $\tau$. This notion generalizes pattern-avoidance in permutations. We determine all the Wilf-equivalence classes of word patterns of length at most six. We also consider analogous problems within the set of integer compositions and the set of parking functions, which may both be regarded as special types of words, and which contain all permutations. In both these restricted settings, we determine the equivalence classes of all patterns of length at most five. As it turns out, the full classification of these short patterns can be obtained with only a few general bijective arguments, which are applicable to patterns of arbitrary size.

Extending the notion of pattern avoidance in permutations, we study matchings and set partitions whose arc diagram representation avoids a given configuration of three arcs. These configurations, which generalize $3$-crossings and $3$-nestings, have an interpretation, in the case of matchings, in terms of patterns in full rook placements on Ferrers boards. We enumerate $312$-avoiding matchings and partitions, obtaining algebraic generating functions, in contrast with the known D-finite generating functions for the $321$-avoiding (i.e., $3$-noncrossing) case. Our approach provides a more direct proof of a formula of Bóna for the number of $1342$-avoiding permutations. We also give a bijective proof of the shape-Wilf-equivalence of the patterns $321$ and $213$ which greatly simplifies existing proofs by Backelin-West-Xin and Jelínek, and provides an extension of work of Gouyou-Beauchamps for matchings with fixed points. Finally, we classify pairs of patterns of length 3 according to shape-Wilf-equivalence, and enumerate matchings and partitions avoiding a pair in most of the resulting equivalence classes.

$S_n(\pi_1,\pi_2,\dots, \pi_r)$ denotes the set of permutations of length $n$ that have no subsequence with the same order relations as any of the $\pi_i$. In this paper we show that $|S_n(1342,2143)|=|S_n(3142,2341)|$ and $|S_n(1342,3124)|=|S_n(1243,2134)|$. These two facts complete the classification of Wilf-equivalence classes for pairs of permutations of length four. In both instances we exhibit bijections between the sets using the idea of a "block", and in the former we find a generating function for $|S_n(1342,2143)|$.

AbstractIn this paper, we continue the study of powerfully nilpotent groups. These are powerful p-groups possessing a central series of a special kind. To each such group, one can attach a powerful nilpotency class that leads naturally to the notion of a powerful coclass and classification in terms of an ancestry tree. In this paper, we will give a full classification of powerfully nilpotent groups of rank 2. The classification will then be used to arrive at a precise formula for the number of powerfully nilpotent groups of rank 2 and order {p^{n}}. We will also give a detailed analysis of the ancestry tree for these groups. The second part of the paper is then devoted to a full classification of powerfully nilpotent groups of order up to {p^{6}}.

This paper concerns the following question: given a subset [Formula: see text] of [Formula: see text] with empty interior and an integrability parameter [Formula: see text], what is the maximal regularity [Formula: see text] for which there exists a non-zero distribution in the Bessel potential Sobolev space [Formula: see text] that is supported in [Formula: see text]? For sets of zero Lebesgue measure, we apply well-known results on set capacities from potential theory to characterize the maximal regularity in terms of the Hausdorff dimension of [Formula: see text], sharpening previous results. Furthermore, we provide a full classification of all possible maximal regularities, as functions of [Formula: see text], together with the sets of values of [Formula: see text] for which the maximal regularity is attained, and construct concrete examples for each case. Regarding sets with positive measure, for which the maximal regularity is non-negative, we present new lower bounds on the maximal Sobolev regularity supported by certain fat Cantor sets, which we obtain both by capacity-theoretic arguments, and by direct estimation of the Sobolev norms of characteristic functions. We collect several results characterizing the regularity that can be achieved on certain special classes of sets, such as [Formula: see text]-sets, boundaries of open sets, and Cartesian products, of relevance for applications in differential and integral equations.

In this paper, we study natural paracontact magnetic trajectories in the unit tangent bundle, i.e., those that are associated to g-natural paracontact metric structures. We characterize slant natural paracontact magnetic trajectories as those satisfying a certain conservation law. Restricting to two-dimensional base manifolds of constant Gaussian curvature and to Kaluza–Klein type metrics on their unit tangent bundles, we give a full classification of natural paracontact slant magnetic trajectories (and geodesics).

In this work we consider the three-dimensional generalized symmetric space, equipped with the left-invariant pseudo-Riemannian metric. We determine Killing vector fields and affine vectors fields. Also we obtain a full classification of Ricci, curvature and matter collineations

The existence of apparently coincidental equalities (also called Wilf-equivalences) between the enumeration sequences or generating functions of various hereditary classes of combinatorial structures has attracted significant interest. We investigate such coincidences among non-crossing matchings and a variety of other Catalan structures including Dyck paths, 231-avoiding permutations and plane forests. In particular we consider principal subclasses defined by not containing an occurrence of a single given structure. An easily computed equivalence relation among structures is described such that if two structures are equivalent then the associated principal subclasses have the same enumeration sequence. We give an asymptotic estimate of the number of equivalence classes of this relation among structures of size $n$ and show that it is exponentially smaller than the $n^{th}$ Catalan number. In other words these "coincidental" equalities are in fact very common among principal subclasses. Our results also allow us to prove in a unified and bijective manner several known Wilf-equivalences from the literature.

If two particles collide near a rotating black hole, their energy in the centre of mass frame can become unbounded under certain conditions. In doing so, the Killing energy [Formula: see text] of debris at infinity is, in general, remain restricted. If [Formula: see text] is also unbounded, this is called the super-Penrose process. We elucidate when such a process is possible and give full classification of corresponding relativistic objects for rotating space-times. We also discuss the case of a pure electric super-Penrose process that is valid even in the flat space-time. The key role in consideration is played by the Wald inequalities.

We construct the complete invariant for fused links. It is proved that the set of equivalence classes of [Formula: see text]-component fused links is in one-to-one correspondence with the set of elements of the abelization [Formula: see text] up to conjugation by elements from the symmetric group [Formula: see text].
