For a hypergraph ${\cal H} = (V,{\cal E})$, its $d$–fold symmetric product is defined to be $\Delta^d {\cal H} = (V^d,\{E^d |E \in {\cal E}\})$. We give several upper and lower bounds for the $c$-color discrepancy of such products. In particular, we show that the bound ${\rm disc}(\Delta^d {\cal H},2) \le {\rm disc}({\cal H},2)$ proven for all $d$ in [B. Doerr, A. Srivastav, and P. Wehr, Discrepancy of Cartesian products of arithmetic progressions, Electron. J. Combin. 11(2004), Research Paper 5, 16 pp.] cannot be extended to more than $c = 2$ colors. In fact, for any $c$ and $d$ such that $c$ does not divide $d!$, there are hypergraphs having arbitrary large discrepancy and ${\rm disc}(\Delta^d {\cal H},c) = \Omega_d({\rm disc}({\cal H},c)^d)$. Apart from constant factors (depending on $c$ and $d$), in these cases the symmetric product behaves no better than the general direct product ${\cal H}^d$, which satisfies ${\rm disc}({\cal H}^d,c) = O_{c,d}({\rm disc}({\cal H},c)^d)$.

In this expository note, we discuss the celebrated theorem known as ``van der Waerden's theorem on arithmetic progressions", the history of work on upper and lower bounds for the function associated with this theorem, a number of generalizations, and some open problems.

Bounds on the tail of compound distributions are considered. Using a generalization of Wald's fundamental identity, we derive upper and lower bounds for various compound distributions in terms of new worse than used (NWU) and new better than used (NBU) distributions respectively. Simple bounds are obtained when the claim size distribution is NWUC, NBUC, NWU, NBU, IMRL, DMRL, DFR and IFR. Examples on how to use these bounds are given.

A generalisation of the van der Waerden numbers w(k, r) is considered. For a function f: Z+ → R+ define w(f, k, r) to be the least positive integer (if it exists) such that for every r-coloring of [1, w(f, k, r)] there is a monochromatic arithmetic progression {a + id: 0 ≤ i ≤ k −1} such that d ≥ f(a). Upper and lower bounds are given for w(f, 3, 2). For k > 3 or r > 2, particular functions f are given such that w(f, k, r) does not exist. More results are obtained for the case in which f is a constant function.

In this research paper, we implement the theory of the primorial function, to develop the Supremum and Infimum bounds for the sum of (log(p))2. There are, however, considerable computational difficulties related to these bounds. Therefore, from a pragmatic point of view, a set of Upper and Lower bounds had been developed to bypass this issue. Despite the increased estimation error, the Upper and Lower bounds are still considered sufficiently accurate, while facilitating an easy and fast computation of the estimate of the sum.

Given a graph G without isolated vertices, a total Roman dominating function for G is a function f:V(G)→{0,1,2} such that every vertex u with f(u)=0 is adjacent to a vertex v with f(v)=2, and the set of vertices with positive labels induces a graph of minimum degree at least one. The total Roman domination number γtR(G) of G is the smallest possible value of ∑v∈V(G)f(v) among all total Roman dominating functions f. The total Roman domination number of the direct product G×H of the graphs G and H is studied in this work. Specifically, several relationships, in the shape of upper and lower bounds, between γtR(G×H) and some classical domination parameters for the factors are given. Characterizations of the direct product graphs G×H achieving small values (≤7) for γtR(G×H) are presented, and exact values for γtR(G×H) are deduced, while considering various specific direct product classes.

In this article, we discuss some new upper and lower bounds for the survivor function of the sum of n independent random variables each of which has an NBUE (new better than used in expectation) distribution. In some cases, only the means of the random variables are assumed known. These bounds are compared to the sharp bounds given in Cheng and Lam [6], which requires both means and variances known. Although the new bounds are not sharp, they often produce better upper bounds for the survivor function in the extreme right tail of many NBUE lifetime distributions, an important special case in applications. Moreover, a lower bound exists in one case not handled by the lower bounds of Theorem 3 in Cheng and Lam [6]. Numerical studies are presented along with theoretical discussions.

The generalized distance matrix D α ( G ) of a connected graph G is defined as D α ( G ) = α T r ( G ) + ( 1 − α ) D ( G ) , where 0 ≤ α ≤ 1 , D ( G ) is the distance matrix and T r ( G ) is the diagonal matrix of the node transmissions. In this paper, we extend the concept of energy to the generalized distance matrix and define the generalized distance energy E D α ( G ) . Some new upper and lower bounds for the generalized distance energy E D α ( G ) of G are established based on parameters including the Wiener index W ( G ) and the transmission degrees. Extremal graphs attaining these bounds are identified. It is found that the complete graph has the minimum generalized distance energy among all connected graphs, while the minimum is attained by the star graph among trees of order n.

Abstract The main aim of this paper is to establish some Fejér-type inequalities involving hypergeometric functions in terms of GA-s-convexity. For this purpose, we construct a Hadamard k-fractional identity related to geometrically symmetric mappings. Moreover, we give the upper and lower bounds for the weighted inequalities via products of two different mappings. Some applications of the presented results to special means are also provided.
