Electroencephalograph (EEG) is an alternative tool to detect brain abnormalities, but research on dementia patients is still limited. This study aimed to determine the differences in EEG waves with closed eyes between older women with dementia and non-dementia. This research uses a cross-sectional method. Examination of dementia using MMSE (Mini-Mental State Examination) with a cut-off value of 23 and examination of brain waves using InteraXon Muse Headband EEG (InteraXon, Canada) for 10 minutes at rest with eyes closed. The study sample consisted of 27 women with dementia and 27 non-dementia women with a mean age of 74.65 years from nursing homes and public health centers in Bandung, Indonesia. Data analysis used independent sample t-test and Mann-Whitney test. The results showed that there were significant differences in Delta AF7 (p = 0.007), Delta TP9 (p = 0.039), Delta TP10 (p = 0.024), and Theta AF7 (p = 0.017). Older women with dementia have lower slow waves (delta and theta waves) than older women without dementia. In conclusion, older women with dementia had decreased EEG waves, including those in Delta AF7, Delta TP9, Delta TP10, and Theta AF7, compared with older women without dementia. Further research can be done with a larger number of respondents and provide stimulation during the EEG examination.

Background: Disposal of pharmaceutical waste among patients is a global challenge especially in developing countries like Ethiopia. Improper medication disposal can lead to health problems and environmental contaminations. Therefore, the present study aimed to assess disposal practices of unused medications among patients in public health centers of Dessie town, Northeast Ethiopia. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 263 patients in four public health centers of Dessie town, Ethiopia from March to June, 2019. Face-to-face interviews using structured questionnaires were used to collect data from each study subject. Results: The majority of the respondents, 224 (85.17%) had unused medications at their home during the study period. The most commonly reported disposal method in the present study was flushing down into a toilet 66 (25.09%). None of the respondents practiced returning unused medications to Pharmacy. Moreover, 85 (32.31%) of the respondents reported never disposing their medications and believed that it is acceptable to store medications at home for future use. Conclusion: In the present study, there was a high practice of keeping medications at home and most of the disposal practices were not recommended methods. In addition, most of the respondents did not get advice from pharmacists and other health care professionals on how to dispose off unused medications. Hence, there is a need for proper education and guidance of patients regarding disposal practices of unused medications.

ABSTRACTDiagnosing delirium superimposed on dementia (DSD) remains challenging because of a lack of specific tools, though motor dysfunction in delirium has been relatively under-explored. This study aimed to use dysfunction in balance and mobility (with the Hierarchical Assessment of Balance And Mobility: HABAM) to identify DSD. This is a cross-sectional multicenter study, recruiting consecutive patients ≥70 years admitted to five acute or rehabilitation hospitals in Ireland, Italy, Portugal, and Switzerland. Delirium was diagnosed using DSM-5 criteria; dementia was determined by the Mini-Mental State Examination and the Questionnaire of Cognitive Decline in the Elderly. HABAM score was recorded at admission. Out of 114 patients (mean age ± SD = 82 ± 7; 54% female), dementia alone was present in 24.6% (n = 28), delirium alone in 18.4% (n = 21) and DSD in 27.2% (n = 31). Patients with DSD had a mean HABAM score 7 points greater than those with dementia alone (19.8 ± 8.7 vs 12.5 ± 9.5; p < 0.001); 70% of participants with DSD were correctly identified using the HABAM at a cut off of 22 (sensitivity 61%, specificity 79%, AUC = 0.76). Individuals with delirium have worse motor function than those without delirium, even in the context of comorbid dementia. Measuring motor function using the HABAM in older people at admission may help to diagnose DSD.

Background: Dementia is a chronic & progressive neurodegenerative disorder affecting usually older people of more than 65 years in which there are disturbances of multiple higher cortical functions including memory, thinking, orientation & others. Dementia patients are increasing in number as the population of older age group is increasing. All types of dementia are treatable, at least with psychosocial interventions. So, accurate diagnosis and evaluation of etiological pattern is essential. Methods: This cross sectional study was carried out in the Department of Neurology, Bangabandu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Dhaka, Bangladesh from January 2012 to December 2012 on 88 patients with dementia diagnosed on the basis of mini mental state examination and DSM-IV criteria. Results: Vascular dementia was the underlying diagnosis in most of the cases (43.3 %) followed by Alzheimers Disease (20.2%) and Parkinson Disease (9%). Other causes were Mixed Dementia, Intracranial Space Occupying Lesion, Post Encephalitic, Hypoxic Encephalitic, Chronic Subdural Haematoma and Tubercular Meningitis. Conclusion: Vascular dementia is more than Alzheimer’s Dementia in Bangladesh. Multiple vascular risk factors contribute to this. Bangladesh Journal of Neuroscience 2016; Vol. 32 (2): 85-90

Background. The increased morbidity and mortality rates in children under five in developing countries are mostly attributed to poor availability and failure of prescribing lifesaving medicines. This study was aimed at evaluating the availability and utilization of the WHO-recommended priority lifesaving medicines for children under five in public health facilities. Method. A cross-sectional survey complemented with a qualitative method was conducted in 14 health centers and four hospitals in the Jimma Zone, Ethiopia. In the facilities, we assessed the availability within the last half year and on the day of the visit. Utilization of the medicines was assessed through a review of patient records of the last one year. Twelve in-depth interviews were carried out to collect the qualitative data, and the analysis was executed using thematic analysis. Results. For treatment of pneumonia, amoxicillin dispersible tablets and gentamycin injection were available in 94.4% of the facilities. For treatment of malaria, artemether/lumefantrine was available in 61.1% of the facilities. For pain management, paracetamol tablets were available in 94.4% of the facilities. AZT+3TC+NEV for HIV/AIDS management was available in all facilities. At least one essential medicine was out of stock in the past six months with the average duration of 33.6 days in health centers and 28.25 days in hospitals. Oral rehydration salt and zinc (84.7%) and AZT+3TC+NEV (100%) had better utilization. However, for almost all cases, other nonpriority medicines were highly prescribed. Lack of administrative commitment, supply of near expiry products, complexity of diseases, and lack of customized child formulations were among the challenges of availability and utilization of those medicines. Conclusions. The overall availability of lifesaving medicines on the day of the visit was fairly good but with poor utilization in almost all facilities. Some products were not available for considerable length of time in the past six months.
