According to the opinion of certain specialists - who would consider themselves outstanding experts the canning industry has passed the stage of maturity and entered a declining phase of lifecycle within the industry. We, on the contrary, maintain the view, as supported by evidence in the present study, that the above position in not suitably grounded. This viewpoint may be further confirmed by considering the issue at hand through the angle of regional development and the current situation of Hungarian national economy. While refraining from giving a detailed account of the reasons underlying the world economic crisis, we would like to point out that the crisis is likely to affect economies with a well-established agriculture and, on that basis, a highly developed food industry, to a lesser degree. The situation in Hungary would have developed in a different way if we had treated the Hungarian agricultural line of business and, in particular, canning industry, as an industry of strategic importance. An attempt is made in this study to support the above view.

Franchising has gained popularity over the last decades. From a franchisor point of view, expanding a franchise network depends on several key aspects, one of which is the franchisee candidate recruitment and appropriate selection. This paper develops a theoretical franchisee selection model, which is based on an extensive international literature review and then discussed with 33 German-speaking franchise experts, in order to result in an improved and practically oriented model. The findings of this research are numerous and include the closely oriented opinion between academics around the world and interviewed franchise experts in Germany and Austria. Qualitative interviews give an insight in the many facets necessary to consider when evaluating a franchisee candidate. Nevertheless, the complexity of the topic limits the validity of the analysis made in this single paper.

Deserted Devices and Wasted Fences is acaptivating critique on consumer culture and the role technology plays, and canplay, in our understanding of the world around us and ourselves. Dani Ploeger’scollection of essays offer a guided tour of items and memories, like a livingmemory box. These writings probe our relationships with devices and what they representin our culture; from mobile phones to projectors, from smart fences to strap-ondildos. Ploeger’s provocation unravels from the journey of a device; to theintertwining of the human and non-human technology, shifting gears to the symbolismand mythology of military and state devices of control, closing with thecultural interaction with architectural decisions made in urban landscapes.Although seemingly grand, and without a doubt ambitious, in subject matter,Ploeger evokes the tone of memoir, incorporating reflections of his travels andpersonal happenings, with philosophical and political deliberation; bringing inkey thinkers to ratify and expand his unique perspectives.
