With an electrical grid shifting toward Distributed Generation (DG), the emerging use of renewable energy resources is continuously creating challenges to maintain an acceptable electrical power quality thought-out the grid; Therefore, in an energy market where loads are becoming more and more sensitive in a distributed generation filled with polluting nonlinear loads, power quality improvement devices such Active Power Filters (APFs) have to evolve to meet the new standards, since theirs conventional control strategies can't properly operate when multiple power quality problems happens at once, even the one using AI based control as it will be proven in this paper. In this paper a neural network based Active Power Filter will be tested in a DG environment where both current and voltage harmonics, along with fast frequency variation occurs, we will see how the PLL can downgrade its performances enormously under such hostile conditions, We propose to solve this problem by replacing the conventional PLL with a nonlinear least square (NLS) frequency estimator, this novel NLS-ADALINE SAPF is immune in high DG penetration environment, as it will be tested and validated experimentally on an Opal-RT OP5600 FPGA based real-time simulator.

A new control strategy for active power filters is proposed, modeled and implemented in order to improve the power quality of a line commutated converter High voltage DC link. The ability of reactive power and harmonics reductions are generally met by using passive and active power filters. In this paper, modified active power filter with a modified harmonics pulse width modulation algorithm is used to minimize the source harmonics and force the AC supply current to be in the same phase with AC voltage source at both sending and receiving sides of a line commutated converter high voltage DC link. Therefore, it is considered as power factor corrector and harmonics eliminator with random variations in the load current. The modified harmonics pulse width modulation algorithm is applicable for active power filter based on a three-phase five-level and seven-level cascaded H-bridge voltage source inverter. Simulation results show that the suggested modified multilevel active power filters improve total harmonics distortion of both voltage and current with almost unity effective power factor at both AC sides of high voltage DC link. Therefore, modified active power filter is an effective tool for power quality improvement and preferable for line commutated converter high voltage DC link at different load conditions.

This paper presents the use of a three-phase four-wire shunt active power filter to improve the power quality in the Department of Industrial Electronics of a large enterprise from Romania. The specificity is given by the predominant existence of single-phase consumers (such as personal computers, printers, lighting and AC equipment). In order to identify the power quality indicators and ways to improve them, an A-class analyzer was used to record the electrical quantities and energy parameters in the point of common coupling (PCC) with the nonlinear loads for 27 h. The analysis shows that, in order to improve the power quality in PCC, three goals must be achieved: the compensation of the distortion power, the compensation of the reactive power and the compensation of the load unbalance. By using the conceived three-leg shunt active power filter, controlled through the indirect current control method in an original variant, the power quality at the supply side is very much improved. In the proposed control algorithm, the prescribed active current is obtained as a sum of the loss current provided by the DC voltage and the equivalent active current of the unbalanced load. The performance associated with each objective of the compensation is presented and analyzed. The results show that all the power quality indicators meet the specific standards and regulations and prove the validity of the proposed solution.
