The introduction elaborates the key claim of the book, namely that Robinson was the most pioneering comparative critic in England during the early Romantic period. He developed a revolutionary theory of literature’s cross-cultural ethical relevance from his unrivalled understanding of Kantian and post-Kantian thought, the Anglo-French philosophical tradition, as well as his broad reading across English, German, and French literature, primarily. Robinson’s prescient 1802 critique of Wordsworth and Coleridge’s Lyrical Ballads as generating non-didactic moral discourse emerges as the exemplary manifestation of his critical approach, according to which a poet’s aspiration to artistic disinterestedness, though never to be fulfilled entirely, may function as a catalyst for moral disinterestedness. The introduction further places this claim in its historical and present-day contexts – from Hazlitt, Schiller, and the Schlegels’ critical schools to Walter Benjamin’s dissertation on German Romantic criticism to the present ‘ethical turn’ in literary studies – before parcelling it out by means of chapter synopses. It also clarifies the terminology that Robinson applied, for instance ‘literator’ for his career choice of cross-cultural literary critic and disseminator – or comparatist, in today’s terms.

Machiavelli, one of the most famous of political writers, wrote a play which many critics regard as one of the best comedies of the Italian Renaissance. The question which inevitably arises is whether there is a connection between the serious and the comic works of Machiavelli, whether the Mandragola stands alone, a tribute pure and simple to the versatility of Machiavelli's mind, or whether the themes of the Mandragola are an extension of the themes found in the bulk of his writings. Is there, in short, a political message, cleverly disguised, in the Mandragola? Some of Machiavelli's commentators think so, but they flatly contradict one another. Alessandro Parronchi regards the Mandragola as an “allegoria del ritorno dei Medici in Firenze,” while Theodore Sumberg interprets the play as a call to overthrow the Medici. Not surprisingly, then, the literary critic is apt to insist that students of politics should mind their own business: literary studies should be left to literary critics, political studies to political critics.

In regard to poetry criticism, the hidden artist inside Le was totally released. His exquisite talent was sublimated.

In the article the Shevchenko studies of the famous Romanian scientist-Ukrainist Ivan Reboshapka are analyzed. The scientific visions of the literary critic on the poetic universe of Taras Shevchenko are commented. The purpose of the article is to analyze the Shevchenko studies of the famous Romanian Ukrainianist, professor of the University of Bucharest Ivan Reboshapka, who makes up a large array of the scholar's literary studies. The relevance of the study is due to the need for a systematic analysis of the reception of T. Shevchenko's creativity in the literary discourse of a foreign scientist. The novelty of the article lies in the fact that there is no comprehensive analysis of T. Shevchenko's art in the assessment of the Romanian-Ukrainian scholar in contemporary Shevchenko studies. In the article biographical, descriptive and comparative research methods are used. Conclusions. Ivan Reboshapka's Shevchenko studios represent deep scientific observations at the intersection of cultural studies and literary studies. They are characterized by a multivector approach, a deepening into the individual style of the writer. Interdisciplinary parallels, many of which we observe in the literary works of Professor Ivan Reboshapka, are the basis for a modern rethinking of creativity of T. Shevchenko, and also offer the ways for further Shevchenko studies
