Assessing the level of improvement of students' writing competency during a semester is becoming increasingly important for business communication instructors. When conducting an assessment, instructors need to be aware of issues that will affect reliability and validity. They need to develop cleargoals at the beginning; for example, good assessment strives to improve instruction and to develop students' communication skills. Because different schools have different missions and operate in different environments, a custom-made instrument will ensure that the assessment fits the local conditions. Before con ducting the assessment, the instrument needs to be validated for specific use, and scorers must be trained in holistic scoring to reach an overall assessment.

Literature revealed that the patterns/methods of scoring essay tests had been criticized for not being reliable and thisunreliability is more likely to be more in internal examinations than in the external examinations. The purpose of thisstudy is to find out the effects of analytical and holistic scoring patterns on scorer reliability in biology essay tests inEnugu Education Zone of Enugu State. Post-test only control group design was used. All the 212 Biology teachersfrom the thirty one secondary schools in Enugu Education Zone of Enugu State were used. The researcher constructedBiology essay test (BET) with scoring guide on biology essay tests (SGBET) for data collection. The research questionwas answered using Pearson’s Product moment correlation coefficient (r). The hypothesis was tested using t-test. Theresults showed that the use of the holistic scoring pattern was found to be the most reliable followed by analyticalscoring pattern. Recommendations were made based on the findings of the study.

The study examined the process of identifying and rewarding faculty members for teaching excellence in a university setting. A holistic scoring procedure was developed to screen candidates and to facilitate the decision process. Improvements in measurement are required before a statistical approach can replace a collegial approach based on consensus among academic peers.

<p>This research paper introduces a model of translation evaluation called Logistic Calibrated Items method. The aim of LCI method is to maximize a translators’ performance and to identify top competent translators through detecting all parsing items within a source text. Parsing items are extracted by the application of Brat software. The purpose of LCI was to identify parsing items having optimal item difficulty and item discrimination values. LCI method involves six stages: (1) holistic scoring; (2) the application of Brat software to extract all parsing items; (3) the calculation of item difficulty; (4) the calculation of item discrimination; (5) the identification of items with optimal item difficulty and item discrimination values; and (6) the recalculation of scores. 125 translation students and 4 professional translation evaluators took part in this research. The final results showed that LCI method was more consistent when compared to holistic method. Limitations and implications were also discussed.</p>
