Ulomoides dermestoides are used as a broad-spectrum medical insect in the alternative treatment of various diseases. Preliminary volatilome studies carried out to date have shown, as the main components, methyl-1,4-benzoquinone, ethyl-1,4-benzoquinone, 1-tridecene, 1-pentadecene, and limonene. This work focused on the production of metabolites and their metabolic variations in U. dermestoides under stress conditions to provide additional valuable information to help better understand the broad-spectrum medical uses. To this end, VOCs were characterized by HS-SPME with PEG and CAR/PDMS fibers, and the first reported insect essential oils were obtained. In HS-SMPE, we found 17 terpenes, six quinones, five alkenes, and four aromatic compounds; in the essential oils, 53 terpenes, 54 carboxylic acids and derivatives, three alkynes, 12 alkenes (1-Pentadecene, EOT1: 77.6% and EOT2: 57.9%), 28 alkanes, nine alkyl disulfides, three aromatic compounds, 19 alcohols, three quinones, and 12 aldehydes were identified. Between both study approaches, a total of 171 secondary metabolites were identified with no previous report for U. dermestoides. A considerable number of the identified metabolites showed previous studies of the activity of pharmacological interest. Therefore, considering the wide variety of activities reported for these metabolites, this work allows a broader vision of the therapeutic potential of U. dermestoides in traditional medicine.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the ways and objectives of the use of turmeric by Balinese, as well as the phytochemical content and antioxidant capacity of turmeric extract which is traditionally processed in Bali. Research methods: The method and purpose of utilizing turmeric were obtained through observation and interviews with 900 Balinese respondents. Quantitative phytochemical tests include starch, protein, flavonoid, tannin, phenol and vitamin C levels and qualitatively for the presence of triterpenes, steroids, alkaloids, and saponins. Antioxidant capacity was measured using the DPPH method. Findings: Through this research, we found there were only 36.8% of respondents had ever used turmeric as a traditional medicine. Utilization of turmeric was mostly in the form of loloh or traditional drinks. Phytochemical test results showed turmeric extract had 67.38% starch, 3.42% protein, 2709.39 mg/100 gr flavonoids, tannins 291.64 mg/100gr, phenol 1584.04 mg/100 gr, and vitamin C 0.06 mg/100gr. Qualitatively, turmeric extract contained triterpenes, alkaloids, and saponins, but did not contain steroids. The antioxidant capacity of turmeric extract was 70.9 mg/L GAEAC. Implications: Turmeric extract is a traditional medicine made from nature that is most commonly used by Balinese and very potential to be developed as an antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, or other benefits that still need further investigation.

Plants constitute a rich source of diverse classes of valuable phytochemicals (e.g., phenolic acids, flavonoids, carotenoids, alkaloids) with proven biological activity (e.g., antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, etc.). However, factors such as low stability, poor solubility and bioavailability limit their food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical applications. In this regard, a wide range of delivery systems have been developed to increase the stability of plant-derived bioactive compounds upon processing, storage or under gastrointestinal digestion conditions, to enhance their solubility, to mask undesirable flavors as well as to efficiently deliver them to the target tissues where they can exert their biological activity and promote human health. In the present review, the latest advances regarding the design of innovative delivery systems for pure plant bioactive compounds, extracts or essential oils, in order to overcome the above-mentioned challenges, are presented. Moreover, a broad spectrum of applications along with future trends are critically discussed.

Zingiberaceae (Order: Zingiberales) is recognized as the essential herbaceous species in the tropics. Several species of Zingiberaceae have shown potential in managing some Lepidopteran and Dipteran pests. Currently, there is no report in Malaysia explores the potential use of Zingiberaceae in managing cocoa pests, particularly the Cocoa pod borer (CPB), Conopomorpha cramerella. The study was conducted to evaluate the potential of Zingiberaceae as an adult emergence inhibition of C. cramerella using three locally grown species in Malaysia; Alpinia galanga (galanga), Curcuma longa (turmeric), and Zingiber officinale (ginger). Different ages of the CPB pupa (Days 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5) were selected and were sprayed with Zingiberaceae essential oils (EOs). Pupa was sprayed with EOs at four different concentrations; 100, 200, 400, and 800 ppm. Observations were carried out after 5 to 7 days, where the percentage of the unhatched pupa and healthy adult was recorded. The percentage of the deformed adults were examined based on the abdomen, the antenna, the wings, and overall deformities. The study was repeated four times for each EOs. Results denoted that the percentage of the unhatched pupa was the highest at C. longa (49.75 % a) and significantly different (p<0.05) with A. galanga (48.00 % b), Z. officinale (40.97 % c) and control treatment (13.59 % d). The highest healthy adult emergence was recorded under the control treatment (75.77 % a), and significantly different with all Zingiberaceae EOs. The overall results denoted that most of the deformities occurred after pupa were treated with the Zingiberaceae EOs at high concentrations (400 and 800 ppm), and engaged with the body and wing deformities. The symptom of adult deformities after treating with EOs may indicate the potential of Zingiberaceae as an adult emergence inhibitor of C. cramerella, and can be possibly used for the development of Zingiberaceae based botanical pesticide in the future.
