Chapter one examines the formation of Asian American writers in the era of Asian exclusion through a comparative analysis of Younghill Kang’s and Carlos Bulosan’s responses to Orientalism in their works. As legal exclusion created the racial category of Asian in the United States, migrant Asian writers faced the challenge of creating modern Asian subjects in literary English. Cultural brokers between Orientalist images of their countries of origin and the modern experiences of Asian migrants in the United States, Kang and Bulosan tested the boundaries of English to represent migrant experiences lived in languages other than English. As a heterogeneous cultural epistemology, Orientalism placed different constraints on Kang, who contended with the Orientalist valorization of the Far East, and Bulosan, who resorted to the Filipino intellectual tradition of the ilustrado in the face of Orientalist primitivism.

The article is devoted to the issues of economic development of the Far Eastern territories of Russia. The Russian Far East occupies a rather advantageous economic and geographical position in Russia and the Asia-Pacific region since it borders with China, Japan and the United States. The purpose of the research is to determine the main directions for improving the economic development of the Far Eastern coastal territories, to compare the development of the coastal territories of the Far East, namely, the territory of Primorsky Krai with other countries, to provide a comparative analysis and draw certain conclusions. The area of the region makes up 36 % of the whole Russian territory while its population is only 4 % of the country’s population, which is due to severe weather conditions and weak economic development. The gross regional product to the Far East accounts for 5.7 % of the GRP of Russia. The paper features foreign experience in the development of coastal territories in the USA, China, Japan and Canada. It can be concluded that Russia significantly lags behind these countries in terms of GDP, exports, involvement in trade with the Asia-Pacific Region, and the sale of manufacturing products. A comparative analysis showed that the industrial structure of Russian coastal areas is similar only with those of Canada in raw material orientation of shipped goods, population of the port cities, whereas the indicators of the volume of Far Eastern cargo transportation in Russia lag behind all the countries examined. Apparently the main areas of development of the Far Eastern territories are: structural changes in the economy; attracting foreign investment in the creation of both mining, logging, and processing industries; development of transport infrastructure.

In recent years, European ports have, due to the increasing traffic between the Far East and Europe, become increasingly important. Large volumes of freight come to ships and it is important to have a link to the mainland via railway, which should have a functional overall system. This research compares three variants of possible routes for railway freight transport from the North Adriatic ports of Rijeka, Koper, and Trieste to Žilina, in the north of Slovakia. The methodology for calculating the minimum package of train access charges for the countries covered by these routes is presented. A comparative analysis of train access charges (TAC) for the minimum access package for the corridors between North Adriatic ports and City of Žilina has also been conducted. The result entailed in this research is the most favourable railway route for freight transport from the North Adriatic ports to the City of Žilina.

The article examines the measures and results of the implementation of government strategies, programs, concepts adopted in the period 2009-2019. and aimed at the development of the subjects of the Far-Eastern federal district for the period up to 2025. Monitoring of indicators of demography of the population, living standards and development of social infrastructure was carried out. A comparative analysis of the actual and program indicators of development, as well as the responses of the socio-demographic system of the region to institutional innovations in the period 2009-2019 has been carried out. It has been established that, despite the abundance of adopted documents and a significant number of developed and applied measures, the achievement of the set goals, in any case, to maximize the population, has not been achieved. It is shown that the intensity of reproduction of social infrastructure facilities remains low, which weakly contributes to overcoming negative migration dynamics. The necessity of adjusting measures of state regulation in the field of social development and creating a comfortable living environment has been substantiated

Leszek Karczewski, Czego warto się uczyć w zakresie zarządzania od Dalekiego Wschodu? [What is worth to learn in management from the Far East?] edited by W. Banach, M.A. Michalski, J. Sójka, „Człowiek i Społeczeństwo” vol. XLVI: Między Chinami a Zachodem. Pytanie o źródłachińskiego sukcesu gospodarczego [Between China and the West. An inquiry into the sources of the Chinese economic miracle], Poznań 2018, pp. 159–174, Adam Mickiewicz University. Faculty of Social Sciences Press. ISSN 0239-3271.The article emphasizes the need of learning from one’s own history mistakes and the success of other countries such as Japan and China. The author presented the current situation of Poland in both skeptical and optimistic perspectives. The transformation of 1989 is indicated as the genesis of current challenges of the country. In the next part of the article there are suggested actions that could be taken after the transformation in the field of state and organization management in order to realize the idea of Poland as the “second Japan”. The last part of the article is devoted to describing what can still be learned from the Far East countries in the field of economy and management.
