One of the main tasks in the study of historic buildings is the need to identify the original materials and extensions, which often have historic character. The next task concerns the determination of the composition and structure of the historical, diagnosis technique to develop original paint. The article presents the preliminary results of paintings. Methods were used with the scanning electron microscope was equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (SEM-EDS).

The oxidation behavior of steel and pure copper has been investigated in the temperature range of 500-700°C at various oxygen pressures. The rate of oxidation was measured using thermal gravimetric apparatus (TGA). The morphology, composition and structure of the oxide scale were determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD).

<p>An energetic co-crystal consisting of the most promising military explosive 2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitro-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaazaisowurtzitane (CL-20) and the most well-known oxidant applied in propellants ammonium perchlorate has been prepared with a simple solvent evaporation method. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the morphology of co-crystal differs greatly from each component. The X-ray diffraction spectrum, FTIR, Raman spectra, and differential scanning calorimetry characterisation further prove the formation of the co-crystal. The result of determination of hygroscopic rate indicated the hygroscopicity was effectively reduced. At last, the crystallisation mechanism has been discussed.</p>

AbstractDisputes on the painting methods of Goguryeo murals can mainly be categorized into whether the murals adapted eastern secco or western fresco; however, the murals have their own unique methods as well. There are different viewpoints among experts on interpreting the painting methods. This study involved the creation of research samples to discover the painting methods under dispute and may help discover the methods based on scanning electron microscopy energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) studies. Goguryeo murals introduced pseudo-fresco rather than buon fresco methods. Unlike fresco techniques in the West, Goguryeo painters mixed traditional soft binders and adapted typical secco painting techniques for paintings, borders, and corrections after drying. The disputed issues may be resolved by these techniques, and samples may be produced based on the analyzed data. Therefore, many questions can finally be answered through SEM-EDX elemental mapping.

A cheilostome bryozoan Tobolocella levinae gen. et sp. nov. is described from a late Maastrichtian outcrop located on the right bank of the Tobol River in northern Kazakhstan. Its morphology is investigated in detail using combined scanning electron microscopy and X-ray micro-CT data. These studies reveal that colonies of this new genus generally consist of regularly arranged but morphologically different zooids: autozooids, T-zooids, and vicarious avicularia. The T-zooids first established in T. levinae gen. et sp. nov. are zooids with a modified cystid and can be interpreted as autozooidal polymorphs, if its polypide was identical to that of regular autozooids, or heterozooids, if its polypide was modified. The T-zooids probably can increase the distance between autozooidal polypides to improve their feeding efficiency.

A rapid method towards nanoPbS on peacock feathers was reported and this is inspired by a hair-dyeing technology used in Ancient Egypt thousands of years ago. Original peacock feather was sulfhydrylated by 2, 3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) dissolved in alcohol to enhance reaction sites, and then was immersed in the saturated PbO solution in calcium hydroxide and got the PbS peacock feather. The whole process is only two steps and could be completed within two hours. The morphology and structures of the sample were measured by the X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscope (TEM) and results showed that the structure of original peacock feather was well duplicated. Compared with previous works, this method is faster and more efficient and thus has potentials to fabricate other functional sulfides.
