Present Scenario, Constraints, and Prospects of Vegetable Cultivation under Protected Structures in Haryana

The present study was conducted in the Sonepat, Karnal, and Hisar districts of Haryana, and the selection was based on the predominance of vegetable cultivation under protected structures. This study was based on both primary and secondary data. The study revealed that the total area under different types of protected structures in Haryana during 2017-18 was 756.99 ha, in which the highest area under a naturally ventilated polyhouse (403.84 ha) followed the net house (353.15 ha). The area under walk-in-tunnels (0.81 ha) was very less. It was concluded that major production constraints were nematode infestation, high cost of polyhouse material, a higher infestation of insect pest and diseases, short life of polysheet, higher cost of water-soluble fertilizer, fear of failure of technology, high cost of plant protection chemicals, higher seed cost and lack of latest package practice knowledge and application of pesticides. Marketing constraints in Haryana state were lack of minimum support price and fluctuation in produce prices was major marketing constraints followed by unorganized marketing and lack of scientific storage while lack of guidance for proper marketing place, suitable packaging material, and transportation facility were least problematic.

Abstract This paper reviews rice procurement operations of Government of India from the standpoints of cost of procurement as well as effectiveness in supporting farmers’ incomes. The two channels in use for procuring rice till 2015, were custom milling of rice and levy. In the first, the government bought paddy directly from farmers at the minimum support price (MSP) and got it milled from private millers; while in the second, it purchased rice from private millers at a pre-announced levy price thus providing indirect price support to farmers. Secondary data reveal that levy, despite implying lower cost of procurement was discriminated against till about a decade back and eventually abolished in 2015 in favor of custom milling, better trusted to provide minimum price support. We analyze data from auctions of paddy from a year when levy was still important to investigate its impact on farmers’ revenues. We use semi-nonparametric estimates of millers’ values to simulate farmers’ expected revenues and find these to be rather close to the MSP; a closer analysis shows that bidder competition is critical to this result. Finally, we use our estimates to quantify the impact of change in levy price on farmers’ revenues and use this to discuss ways to revive the levy channel.

Because of the rapid development of nanotechnologies, materials, in particular, solid dispersions (SDs), which are actively introduced into the life of modern man, have been obtained. Special progress in this area is observed in industry and medicine. The use of SDs in agriculture is lagging far behind, despite the growing number of scientific papers on this topic. At the same time, the prospects for the introduction of SDs in the agro-industrial complex are obvious. The review presents the results of research on the development of innovative preparations based on SD to protect plants from diseases and pests of cultivated plants, as well as parasiticides to protect animal health based on modern achievements of nanotechnology. One of these technologies is the methods of mechanochemistry, which improve the properties of poorly soluble biologically active substances by their joint mechanical treatment with water-soluble polymers and auxiliary substances.

Steroidal glycoalkaloids (SGAs) are major secondary metabolites constitutively produced in cultivated potato Solanum tuberosum, and α-solanine and α-chaconine are the most abundant SGAs. SGAs are toxic to humans at high levels but their role in plant protection against pests and pathogens is yet to be established. In this study, levels of SGAs in potato were reduced by RNA interference (RNAi)-mediated silencing of GLYCOALKALOID METABOLISM 4 (GAME4)—a gene encoding cytochrome P450, involved in an oxidation step in the conversion of cholesterol to SGA aglycones. Two GAME4 RNAi lines, T8 and T9, were used to investigate the effects of manipulation of the SGA biosynthetic pathway in potato. Growth and development of an insect pest, Colorado potato beetle (CPB), were affected in these lines. While no effect on CPB leaf consumption or weight gain was observed, early instar larval death and accelerated development of the insect was found while feeding on leaves of GAME4 RNAi lines. Modulation of SGA biosynthetic pathway in GAME4 RNAi plants was associated with a larger alteration to the metabolite profile, including increased levels of one or both the steroidal saponins or phytoecdysteroids, which could affect insect mortality as well as development time. Colonization by Verticillium dahliae on GAME4 RNAi plants was also tested. There were increased pathogen levels in the T8 GAME4 RNAi line but not in the T9. Metabolite differences between T8 and T9 were found and may have contributed to differences in V. dahliae infection. Drought responses created by osmotic stress were not affected by modulation of SGA biosynthetic pathway in potato.

Background: Pulses are one of the most important food crops grown globally owed to their higher protein content. It also accounts for larger financial gains of the agricultural sector by amounting for a large part of the exports. The present study was carried out to determine the factors affecting production of pulse crops in Rajasthan. Methods: This paper based on secondary data collected over the years i.e. from 2000-01 to 2017-18. The Cobb-douglas production function was used to the observation for the estimation of elasticity of selected variables contributing to the production of pulses in Rajasthan state, Cobb douglas type production function was employed to assess the effects of seed, fertilizer, manure, human labour, irrigation, bullock labour and plant protection measures on pulses production. Result: The results from the study have shown that fertilizer and plant protection measures were positively significant while the variable corresponding to irrigation water was negatively significantly affecting the gram production. The variables such as seed and irrigation water were found positive and significant, while plant protection measures had significant negative effect on black gram production. Only two variables namely, fertilizer and irrigation water were found positively significant out of estimating production function of green gram.

Sizing of the cotton yarn is essential to reduce breakage of the yarn due to abrasion during weaving process. The sizing agent on the woven fabric after weaving needs to remove completely before the next textile production process of dyeing and finishing. So, water soluble sizing agent is easy to handle and easy to desizing for pre-treatment of woven fabric. In this work, different types of water soluble tamarind seed kernel based sizing formulations (assigned by A, B and C) were made and applied on cotton yarn to investigate the effect on the tensile properties of sized and unsized cotton yarns. Cotton yarn treated with size B formulation shows the better tensile properties than the application of size A and size C formulation. The effect of lubricant has also been investigated and shows that the addition of lubricant decreases the tensile properties of the cotton yarn. The field experiment was undertaken at the District Seed Farm, Kalyani at Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Nadia, West Bengal during summer season of 2012 and 2013 to study the growth and yield of summer groundnut as influenced by application of water soluble foliar grade fertilizer. Application of liquid grade fertilizerat early growth stage up to 45 DAE did not influence the plant height and dry matter production significantly, but towards maturity varied significantly (P ≤ 0.05). Crop growth rate was faster at early part of the crop age and gradually slows at later part towards maturity. Foliar application of water soluble fertilizer along with RDF 85% had the significant (P ≤ 0.05) influence to increase the number of pods per plant, but shelling percentage and hundred kernel weight did not vary significantly. Liquid grade fertilizer either starter dose or booster dose or in both had the positive response to increased the groundnut pod yield up to 4-6 % over RDF only. The crop was equally responsive in increasing the pod yield, when RDF was reduced by 15% along with foliar application of liquid grade fertilizer. The foliar application of water soluble fertilizer was not the substitute to soil applied inorganic fertilizer. Instead, foliar supplementation of nutrients showed positive response to increase the pod yield, in addition to the fertilizers added to soil. Gross return decreased with reduction in amount of RDF applied for the crop, but gross return increased, when water soluble foliar grade inorganic fertilizer was supplemented with RDF. The maximum gross return of `150399 was obtained. The results obtained from correlation analysis carried out to examine the linear relationship between pod yields with different plant characters. Data obtained in case of dry matter of the plant was 0.995 and 0.997 in the respective years at 1% level of significance. Thus, it was concluded that dry matter content of plant is solely responsible over the yield increase in groundnut and foliar application of inorganic fertilizers in addition to that in soil has helped in better adsorption of nutrients in adequate amount by the crop.

In an assessment of the carbon footprint (CFP) of a tire product, embodied greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of its tread mold are usually disregarded due to the absence of available information. This study presents embodied GHG emissions of a winter tire tread mold and evaluates its significance. We also provide a comparative study between two types of mold, namely the sector and the element mold, which are not different in terms of the tread forming in the production process, but subject to the customer’s utilization. The assessment was performed according to the international ISO/DIS 14067 standard, requirements, and guidelines for the quantification of the CFP of products. Required input data of the processes were collected and allocated based on a tread mold production plant located in Thailand. Direct GHG emissions and indirect emissions were calculated according to the 2006 IPCC guidelines. In other indirect processes, secondary data from process-based and input-output-based data were assigned to match the best site specificity, and closer fuel mix in upstream inputs. The results obtained in this study show that the embodied GHG emissions were 5,033.36 kg CO2e for the sector mold, whereas 53.73% additional emissions were found in the dataset using the element mold. The embodied emissions estimated for the aluminum input were found to significantly influence the mold CFP. Disregarding the embodied GHG emissions during the production of a single conventional tire could result in an underestimation of 0.03% for the sector type and 0.05% for the element type. Furthermore, appropriate lifetime utilization of the tread mold could increase the contribution of the tread mold CFP.

Intelligent computing techniques have a paramount importance to the treatment of cybersecurity incidents. In such Artificial Intelligence (AI) context, while most of the algorithms explored in the cybersecurity domain aim to present solutions to intrusion detection problems, these algorithms seldom approach the correction procedures that are explored in the resolution of cybersecurity incident problems that already took place. In practice, knowledge regarding cybersecurity resolution data and procedures is being under-used in the development of intelligent cybersecurity systems, sometimes even lost and not used at all. In this context, this work proposes the Case-based Cybersecurity Incident Resolution System (CCIRS), a system that implements an approach to integrate case-based reasoning (CBR) techniques and the IODEF standard in order to retain concrete problem-solving experiences of cybersecurity incident resolution to be reused in the resolution of new incidents. Different types of experimental results so far obtained with the CCIRS show that information security knowledge can be retained with our approach in a reusable memory improving the resolution of new cybersecurity problems.
