A planície costeira brasileira, em especial a do Nordeste do Brasil, apresenta um sistema morfológico que sofre diversas pressões do ponto de vista do uso e ocupação dos seus espaços. Logo, o entendimento da dinâmica natural e espacial desse ambiente requer a adoção de metodologias que contemplem uma abordagem em múltiplas escalas. Neste sentido, este trabalho tem o intuito de analisar as múltiplas morfologias associadas a praia das Fontes, em Beberibe-CE, em diferentes escalas taxonômicas. Esta análise auxiliou na realização de um prognostico das condições ambientais e de sua capacidade de suporte. Metodologicamente aplicou-se a proposta de Bertrand (1971), adotando-se apenas as unidades inferiores que inclui os níveis taxonômicos regionais e/ou locais, compreendendo os geossistemas, geofáciese os geótopos. Os resultados alcançados foram satisfatórios, uma vez que as unidades mapeadas foram validadas em atividades de campo para reconhecimento do produto cartográfico.Palavras-chave: Análise Multiescalar. Formação Barreiras. ABSTRACTThe Brazilian coastal plain, especially in the Northeast of Brazil, presents a morphological system that undergoes several pressures from the point of view of the use and occupation of its spaces. Therefore, the understanding of the natural and spatial dynamics of this environment requires the adoption of methodologies that contemplate a multi-scale approach. In this sense, this work has the purpose of analyzing the multiple morphologies associated to Praia das Fontes, in Beberibe-CE, at different taxonomic scales. This analysis assisted in the accomplishment of a prognosis of the environmental conditions and their support capacity. Context. CLEAN algorithms are excellent deconvolution solvers that remove the sidelobes of the dirty beam to clean the dirty image. From the point of view of the scale, there are two types: scale-insensitive CLEAN algorithms, and scale-sensitive CLEAN algorithms. Scale-insensitive CLEAN algorithms perform excellently well for compact emission and perform poorly for diffuse emission, while scale-sensitive CLEAN algorithms are good for both point-like emission and diffuse emission but are often computationally expensive. However, observed images often contain both compact and diffuse emission. An algorithm that can simultaneously process compact and diffuse emission well is therefore required. Aims. We propose a new deconvolution algorithm by combining a scale-insensitive CLEAN algorithm and a scale-sensitive CLEAN algorithm. The new algorithm combines the advantages of scale-insensitive algorithms for compact emission and scale-sensitive algorithms for diffuse emission. At the same time, it avoids the poor performance of scale-insensitive algorithms for diffuse emission and the great computational load of scale-sensitive algorithms for compact emission in residuals. Methods. We propose a fuse mechanism to combine two algorithms: the Asp-Clean2016 algorithm, which solves the computationally expensive problem of convolution operation in the fitting procedure, and the classical Högbom CLEAN (Hg-Clean) algorithm, which is faster and works equally well for compact emission. It is called fused CLEAN (fused-Clean) in this paper. Results. We apply the fused-Clean algorithm to simulated EVLA data and compare it to widely used algorithms: the Hg-Clean algorithm, the multi-scale CLEAN (Ms-Clean), and the Asp-Clean2016 algorithm. The results show that it performs better and is computationally effective.

Although no estimate of the aggregate length of granite rock coasts around the world is available, they surely make up quite a significant proportion of the total, especially around the Fennoscandian and Canadian Shield (Bird and Schwartz, 1985). However, in contrast to the vast amount of literature about inland granite landforms, granite coastal scenery has attracted significantly less attention, in spite of the fact that some of the most spectacular coastal landscapes are supported by granite (Plate 6.1). Detailed studies of granite coastal geomorphology are surprisingly few, although the structural adjustment of the coastline in plan at the regional scale is a recurrent observation (Bird and Schwartz, 1985). One probable reason for this discrepancy between the length of granite coasts, their scenic values, and scientific knowledge are the low rates of geomorphic change expected along them. Therefore they are poor candidates for any process-oriented studies, which dominate contemporary coastal geomorphology. It is probably because of this scarcity of information that contrasting opinions have been expressed about the specifics of granite coasts. Whereas Twidale (1982: 2) asserts that: ‘In coastal contexts, too, the gross assemblage of forms is due to the processes operating there and not to properties peculiar to granites. . . . Orthogonal fracture sets also find marked expression but, with few exceptions, granite coasts are much the same as most others’; Trenhaile (1987: 173) goes on to say: ‘Igneous coasts are usually quite different from other rock coasts’. On the one hand, many granite coasts consist of an all-too-familiar assemblage of cliffs, coves, joint-aligned inlets, stacks, and sea arches. From this point of view, no components of coastal morphology are likely to be demonstrated to be unique to granite. But this is also true for granite landforms in general, as was indicated in the introduction to this book. On the other hand, there seems to be enough observational material to claim that certain granite coastal landforms have developed specific characteristics, different from those supported by other rocks, as well as that there exist certain very specific sections of granite coasts which hardly have parallels in other lithologies.

Surface texturing has been frequently used for tribological purposes in the last three decades due to its great potential to reduce friction and wear. Although biological systems advocate the use of hierarchical, multi-scale surface textures, most of the published experimental and numerical works have mainly addressed effects induced by single-scale surface textures. Therefore, it can be assumed that the potential of multi-scale surface texturing to further optimize friction and wear is underexplored. The aim of this review article is to shed some light on the current knowledge in the field of multi-scale surface textures applied to tribological systems from an experimental and numerical point of view. Initially, fabrication techniques with their respective advantages and disadvantages regarding the ability to create multi-scale surface textures are summarized. Afterwards, the existing state-of-the-art regarding experimental work performed to explore the potential, as well as the underlying effects of multi-scale textures under dry and lubricated conditions, is presented. Subsequently, numerical approaches to predict the behavior of multi-scale surface texturing under lubricated conditions are elucidated. Finally, the existing knowledge and hypotheses about the underlying driven mechanisms responsible for the improved tribological performance of multi-scale textures are summarized, and future trends in this research direction are emphasized.

The electrocardiogram (ECG) was the first biomedical signal for which digital signal processing techniques were extensively applied. By its own nature, the ECG is typically a sparse signal, composed of regular activations (QRS complexes and other waveforms, such as the P and T waves) and periods of inactivity (corresponding to isoelectric intervals, such as the PQ or ST segments), plus noise and interferences. In this work, we describe an efficient method to construct an overcomplete and multi-scale dictionary for sparse ECG representation using waveforms recorded from real-world patients. Unlike most existing methods (which require multiple alternative iterations of the dictionary learning and sparse representation stages), the proposed approach learns the dictionary first, and then applies a fast sparse inference algorithm to model the signal using the constructed dictionary. As a result, our method is much more efficient from a computational point of view than other existing algorithms, thus becoming amenable to dealing with long recordings from multiple patients. Regarding the dictionary construction, we located first all the QRS complexes in the training database, then we computed a single average waveform per patient, and finally we selected the most representative waveforms (using a correlation-based approach) as the basic atoms that were resampled to construct the multi-scale dictionary. Simulations on real-world records from Physionet’s PTB database show the good performance of the proposed approach.

The high performance of industrial applications, requires increasingly technical functional surfaces, particulary from the point of view of topography and microtexture. To study the effect of abrasive finishing in a wide range of wavelengths of surface topography, we developed a multi-scale approach, based on the decomposition of surface topography by 2D continuous wavelet transform. This new approach made it possible to determine the multi-scale transfer function of machining by abrasion for each stage of finishing. The methodology can be extended to characterize abrasive wear in a wide range of scales.

Dispersal is one of the key mechanisms affecting the distribution of individuals, populations, and communities in nature. Despite advances in the study of single species, it has been notoriously difficult to account for dispersal in multispecies metacommunities, where it potentially has strong effects on community structure beyond those of local environmental conditions. Dispersal should thus be directly integrated in both basic and applied research by using proxies. Here, we review the use of proxies in the current metacommunity research, suggest new proxies, and discuss how proxies could be used in community modelling, particularly in freshwater systems. We suggest that while traditional proxies may still be useful, proxies formerly utilized in transport geography may provide useful novel insights into the structuring of biological communities in freshwater systems. We also suggest that understanding the utility of such proxies for dispersal in metacommunities is highly important for many applied fields such as freshwater bioassessment, conservation planning, and recolonization research in the context of restoration ecology. These research fields have often ignored spatial dynamics and focused mostly on local environmental conditions and changes therein. Yet, the conclusions of these applied studies may change considerably if dispersal is taken into account.

Damage initiation and evolution in NCF composites leading to final failure includes a multitude of mechanisms and phenomena on several length scales. From an engineering point-of-view a computational scheme where all mechanisms would be explicitly addressed is too complex and time consuming. Hence, methods for macroscopic performance prediction of NCF composites, with limited input regarding micro- and mesoscale details, are requested. In this paper, multi-scale modelling approaches for in-plane transverse strength of NCF composites are outlined and discussed. In addition a simplistic method to predict transverse tensile and compressive strength for textile composites featuring low or no fibre waviness is presented.

Este artigo aponta algumas reflexões sobre a ocupação do território e o processo de urbanização brasileiro, sob a ótica da sustentabilidade ambiental. Discute a aplicação do termo desenvolvimento sustentável e as formas usuais como ele tem sido interpretado, muitas vezes deixando de lado sua relação com o conceito de desenvolvimento econômico. Entendemos que as atuais dinâmicas socioespaciais, seja do ponto de vista regional seja local, estão desenhando novas territorialidades, nem sempre condizentes com os discursos acerca da sustentabilidade. Ao mesmo tempo, estão em curso inúmeras mudanças no que diz respeito aos valores ambientais, às práticas sociais e às novas formas de gestão pública. Palavras-chave: sustentabilidade ambiental; urbanização; gestão territorial. Abstract: This article reflects on issues of land occupation and the Brazilian urbanization process, with respect to environmental issues. It discusses the application of “sustainable development” and the usual ways in which this term has been interpreted, that often leave aside its relationship with the concept of economic development. It is understood that current socio-spatial dynamics, either from a regional or local point of view, are dictating new patterns of land use that are not always in accord with the discourse concerning sustainability. Nevertheless, various changes related to environmental values, social practices and new forms of public management can be observed nowadays.Keywords: environmental sustainability; urbanization; public management.

Breu Branco é um município do estado do Pará, localizado na microrregião do lago de Tucuruí. Ao longo dos anos o município experimentou um crescimento populacional acelerado, consequência da migração de pessoas oriundas de outras regiões em busca de trabalho e moradia próximos às obras de barragem. O crescimento espacial tem forte relação com a Hidroelétrica. Além do fator populacional, outros três fatores foram importantes para o crescimento espacial de Breu Branco: o preço da terra, a topografia da área de expansão e a falta de políticas de proteção ambiental no município. Nesse trabalho utilizamos ferramentas cartográficas e sensoriamento remoto para a construção de mapas em três períodos 1996, 2006 e 2016. Os resultados obtidos mostram novas dinâmicas espaciais, como a duplicação da área urbana, saturação do núcleo projetado da cidade em direção ao norte, conversão de áreas de floresta e preservação (APP) em ocupações, concentração imobiliária e especulação sobre novas áreas, do ponto de vista populacional um aumento de 58% da população em vinte anos.Palavras-chave: Hidroelétrica. Plano diretor.SPATIAL DYNAMICS OF USE AND OCCUPATION OF URBAN SOIL IN THE MUNICIPALITY OF BREU BRANCO-PAAbstract: Breu Branco is a municipality in the state of Pará, located in the microregion of Lake Tucuruí. Over the years, the municipality experienced an accelerated population growth, a consequence of the migration of people from other municipalities of Pará and the northeast region of Brazil in search of work and housing near the works. The spatial growth has a strong relationship with the implementation phases of the Tucuruí HPP. In addition to the population factor, three other factors were important for the Breu Branco spatial growth: the price of land, the topography of the expansion area and the lack of environmental protection policies the municipality. In this work, we used cartographic tools and remote sensing for the construction of maps in three periods 1996, 2006 and 2016. The results obtained show new spatial dynamics, such as the duplication of the urban area, saturation of the projected nucleus of the city towards the north, conversion of forest and preservation areas (APP) into occupations, real estate concentration and speculation about new areas, from the point of view. population view an increase of 58% of the population in twenty years. Keywords: Hydroelectric.Territory.
