Abstract The article presents a case study of how the use of multiple parallel texts may be employed as a useful research method in cognitive poetics, using the English version of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass and its four published Czech versions as the samples. In the analysis, we examine the language of space in alternative verbalizations of the same literary scene across languages (English and Czech) and within the target language (Czech), and the different mental images invoked by the different ways of verbalizing the same scene. Our analysis shows that the use of multiple parallel texts can be a helpful research method in cognitive poetics, in the sense that the method is capable of providing naturalistic and representative linguistic evidence of how languages systematically differ, even for a domain as basic as space.

The final case study explores children fathered by members of peacekeeping forces. It investigates the specific nature of peacekeeping societies and the gendered power relations within those, which have led to numerous more or less exploitative relations with significant numbers of so-called peace babies being conceived. The chapter critically analyses UN attempts at both regulating military-civilian relations in its zero-tolerance policies and at recognising the need for troops under UN flag to take responsibility for children fathered peacekeepers.

During Timor-Leste's political and security crisis in 2006, a seemingly latent regional division re-emerged between Timorese from its eastern region, lorosa'e, and those from its western region, loromonu. The conflict between lorosa'e and loromonu revealed critical weaknesses in nation-building. Only four years after independence in 2002, international peacekeeping forces, led by Australia, were redeployed to the new nation-state. This article argues that the enduring political significance of regionalism weakens nation-building in Timor-Leste. This case study revitalises traditional security paradigms by relocating identity-building from the periphery of nation-building to its centre. Identity-building supports the formation of a unifying national political community which transcends social divisions within post-conflict societies.

After decades of military reform, how does the Chinese military justify its persistent role in politics and social life? This mixed-methods study examines the discursive strategies used by military deputies to understand how a semi-professional military speak to its relations to the Party, its own organizational missions and goals, and potential conflicts between them. Computer-assisted text analysis is combined with targeted deep reading to identify and examine latent topics in comments made by military deputies between 2001 and 2017. The findings show that the military deputies simultaneously mobilize a political discourse and a discourse of professionalism. This duality of discourse constitutes a source of legitimacy for the military’s pursuit of corporate interests.

Na Plachtě is located at the south-eastern edge of Hradec Králové where over the past 20 years conflicts of interests between environmentalists and local developers have arisen concerning the development and commercial use of the site. This case study is concerned with the importance of public participation in  environmental issues and describes the specific opportunities for influencing environmental decision-making. The author refers to specific events which eventually resulted in the declaration of the Na Plachtě site as a “natural monument”; she also investigates opportunities for changing the landscape plan which would strengthen  protection against any construction on the site. Other possibilities for influencing decision-making about issues of concern to the general public and which have an impact on the work of regional representatives are also discussed.

This paper is intended to investigate one of the equivalences of the translation: grammatical equivalence. The study used descriptive qualitative method to analyze translation in the novel. The investigation is aimed to identify strategies used to translate three grammatical features: (1) pronoun, (2) number, and (3) voice. The writers take 100 data for each feature as samples of the study. To compare voicing systems in each version of the novel, all sentences in chapter 1 are taken as samples. Based on the findings, the writers conclude that there are five strategies used in translating pronoun: (1) omitting pronoun, (2) translating pronoun as it is, (3) changing pronoun into its reference, (4) making pronoun shift, and (5) adding pronoun. Furthermore, there are two strategies used to translate singular noun with articles: (1) translating articles with lexical addition, (2) translating articles by omission, and (3) changing singular nouns in the English version of the novel into plural nouns in its Indonesian version. In terms of voice, the translator tends to keep the original voice form of the English version of the novel in its Indonesian translation. Keywords: equivalence, pronoun, number, voice Abstrak: A Walk to Remember adalah salah satu novel laris karangan Nicholas Spark.
