NITRATE CONCENTRATION IN PLANT PRODUCTS OF ALBANIAN MARKET

This study presents a research done for nitrate concentration in fruits and vegetables purchased in Albanian markets and department stores.Recently media and television, investigative programs, newspapers, social networks and Association for the Albanian consumer have denounced the problem of the high nitrate content found in plant products.In this study, nitrate concentration available in vegetables and fruits, was determined and compared with standard limits.Thirty-seven fruits and vegetables were purchased in summer and autumn and tested with Green Test Eco 5 supply, a simple and portable apparatus that performs quick measurements with margin error about 10%. Photos of the checked products were made and each value was registered and calculated referring the margin error of the supply. Excel was used to draw diagrams and make statistical analysis.From the results obtained it was noticed a very high concentration of nitrate in vegetables and fruits like watermelon, melon, beetroot, marrow, cherry radish, red potato. These products tested accounted around 40% of the total quantity and were dangerous to eat.For other products it was noticed a lower nitrate content comparing with the dangerous one but again above allowed standard limit like white potatoes, eggplants, cherry radish. These products tested accounted around 20% of the total quantity and were still ok to eat.Of course, the products with nitrate levels below the permitted standard such as bananas, carrots, broccoli, apple, orange, green lettuce, cucumber, kiwi, pineapple, persimmon, onion, cauliflower were also found in the analyzed products. So about 40% of total quantity were safe to eat.The conclusions extracted from this study are such as to highlight the risk to the Albanian consumers and the lack of control of the responsible institutions.

This article deals with the actual problem of high nitrate content in vegetables and fruits. The literature review describes the consequences of increased nitrate concentration in the human body and the diseases associated with it. Different countries have different standards for the content of nitrates in agricultural products and the maximum permissible daily doses. The increased content of nitrates negatively affects human health, so it is necessary to maintain strict control over compliance with the concentration standards to the maximum permissible concentrations. Research was carried out on the content of nitrates in vegetables and fruits purchased in the trade networks of the two countries in Russia and Mongolia. The measurements were performed using a portable nitrate - tester SOEKS. As a result of the study, it was found that agricultural products purchased in the trade network of Ulan Bator (Mongolia) meet the established standards, in fruits purchased in St. Petersburg (Russia) in excess of tangerines 1.5 times and 1.6 times. The products that were found to contain excess nitrates were imported from China.

Growing NH4+ content of groundwater results in increasing exchangeable and fixed ammonium ion content of the soil. NH4+ bond in the soil may go again into solution parallel with the dilution of the soil solution but at a slower rate than fixing. This process influences significantly the NH4+ content of the soil. In settlements with no sewerage system the high NH4+ content of sewage flowing out of uninsulated septic tanks may increase the fixed NH4-N content of the soil that could have a significant effect on the quality of groundwater even after the potential disappearance of pollution sources.In this study the effects of the fixed NH4-N content of the soil around an uninsulated residential septic tank on the purification processes of the groundwater were investigated. The septic tank in the study area was dismantled in 2014 after 27 years of operation as a sewerage system was constructed. When the tank was still in operation in 2012 and 2013, very high, 55–75 mg l-1 NH4+ content was measured in the water of the monitoring well 1 metre from the tank in the course of seasonal sampling. When sewage outflow was terminated in 2014 concentrations decreased right away but even 5 years after pollutant supply was stopped, concentrations (35–57 mg l-1) highly exceeding the pollution limit (0.5 mg l-1) were measured. Considering this very high concentration, it can be assumed that great amount of NH4+ is still released into the groundwater.In order to prove this, the exchangeable and fixed NH4-N and NO3-N contents of the soil were determined by 20 cm down to a depth of 4 metres (2019). The measurements indicated the significant accumulation of exchangeable and fixed NH4-N in the zone between 220 and 400 cm. Highest fixed NH4-N concentrations of 457 mg l-1 were found between 220 and 240 cm suggesting that sewage outflow was most intense at this depth. Slow decrease in concentrations can be observed in deeper zones but concentrations higher than 350 mg l-1 were measured between 220 and 380 cm. Based on correlation analyses, the quantity of fixed NH4-N shows no correlation with the soil texture thus it can be stated that the vertical pattern of NH4-N content is determined dominantly by sewage outflow and its depth. In the unsaturated zone of the borehole a significant accumulation of NO3-N was also identified. The maximum of NO3-N was found in the zone between 100 and 140 cm. The peak nitrate calculated for NO3- ion with a value >1300 mg kg-1 is 2.5 times the limit set for the nitrate content of the geological medium.Based on the results, exchangeable and fixed NH4-N contents in the soil are still very high, 5 years after sewage outflow was stopped. The continuous solution of this component still contributes to the high NH4+ content of the groundwater. As a result, the contaminated soil in the immediate environment of the septic tank is still a pollution source.


High concentration of heavy metal content of fruits and vegetables may reduce their antioxidant properties. Therefore, the concentration of selected heavy metals such as Cr, Ni, Mn, Fe, Mg, Cu and Pb in vegetables (Colocasia esculanta and Abelmoschus esculentus) and fruits (Psidium guajava and Pyrus) was assessed using atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The highest concentrations of heavy metals in vegetables and fruits were found 0.019, 0.008, 0.072, 0.241, 1.754, 0.107 and 0.014 mg/g for Cr, Ni, Mn, Fe, Mg, Cu and Pb, respectively. Level of Cr was found higher in Colocasia esculanta (0.011 mg/g). The highest level of Ni was found in Pyrus (0.008mg/g) while lowest in the Soil of Abelmoschus esculentus (0.003 mg/g). The highest level of Mn was observed in Soil of Colocasia esculanta (0.072 mg/g) while lowest in Abelmoschus esculentus (0.007 mg/g). Maximum level of Mg was found in Soil of Psidium guajava while minimum in Colocasia esculant. Abelmoschus esculentus showed highest level of Cu while minimum level was found in Colocasia esculanta. Pb showed maximum amount in Psidium guajava and minimum in soil of Abelmoschus esculentus. The values of Cr, Ni, Mn, Fe, Mg, Cu and Pb in all samples are in the safe limit. However the study indicates that the vegetables, fruits and soil samples are contaminated by toxic heavy metals.

The aim of this monitoring is to evaluate the nitrate content in vegetables and fruits from the commercial chain in Bulgaria. The vegetables were purchased from the food chains in June and July. The measurements of NO3- ions were carried out with a Greentest appliance, Model ECO 5. Four samples from the conducted monitoring were with higher NO3- amount that is allowed for trade and accepted as healthy (potato, radish, and strawberries). The content of NO3- in fresh potato were 645 mg/kg at the accepted safety level 250 mg/kg. The level of nitrates also was higher in the both samples of radish 3700 mg/kg and 2934 mg/kg at accepted level as safety for consumption 1500 mg/kg. This small survey suggests that on the market in the country are still in the trade food products with not enough good quality.

Abstract Nowadays, thanks to greater awareness of society and development of restorative medicine, more and more attention is paid to preventive care. That is caused by the fact that there is little progress for both sexes in the frequency of healthy behavior: girls fall much worse than boys in terms of frequency of physical activity, they do not eat breakfast either; boys do not maintain a healthy diet and are reluctant to eat vegetables and fruits, they often drink high-calorie sodas and less frequently brush teeth. Though with age some improvements in oral hygiene and certain eating behaviors can be noticed. It has been determined that overweight and obesity is a serious problem, as they can contribute to developmental disorders. In this respect it should be the responsibility of teachers to provide individual physical education (according to medical qualifications), prevent various forms of discrimination and bullying among peers, provide individual counseling and health education, weight control of students. It has been defined that for modern teachers it is a difficult task as students rarely eat fruits and vegetables, do not care about hygiene and frequency of meals, have passive mode of leisure. The acquisition of health during puberty allows functioning smoothly in society. However, despite the continuous work on improving and introduction of new programs of health education classes into schools of Poland, children still suffer from health-related problems. According to epidemiological research most of children in Poland fall on obesity, overweight and accompanying disorders and allergies. Youth is also exposed to accidents and related injuries. The problem is that students do not receive assistance and necessary information.

The assessment of groundwater is essential for the estimation of suitability of water for safe use. An attempt has been made to study the groundwater of selected areas of Punjab (Sheikhupura & Sahiwal) and Sindh (Sindh, Jawar Dharki and Dharki), Pakistan. The results indicate that pH, color and odor were all within limits of WHO that is pH ranges 6.5–8.5, colorless and odorless, respectively. The high values of suspended solids were observed in the Sindh-1 and Dharki samples. Microbiologically only Sahiwal and Jawar Dharki were found fit for drinking purpose. Trace metals analysis of Sheikhupura-1 and Sindh-1 showed that values do not fall within limits of WHO for Iron. The ionic concentration analysis showed that high bicarbonate (HCO3-), ions are present in the samples of Sahiwal and Dharki; Sindh-1 and Jawar Dharki samples showed very high concentration for chloride ions, all samples were satisfactory level for sulphate (SO42-), sodium, magnesium and phosphate ions except samples of Sindh-1 and Jawar Dharki. High concentration of calcium and potassium ions was observed in samples of Sindh-1, while all other samples were found fit for drinking purposes in respect of nitrate, nitrite and ammonium ions. The high concentration of Fluoride was found only in Sheikhupura-2 samples.

Indonesia as an agricultural country has the potential to compete in the agricultural market in the international market, in line with the existence of the ASEAN / ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) Free Market. Ngawi Regency is a fertile area and is one of the buffer zones of the agricultural sector in East Java. Horticulture commodities are one of the main sources in the agricultural sector, because they have high potential and can contribute to the economy of a region. Horticultural commodities in the form of fruits and vegetables are an important food source to meet the nutritional needs of the community. Agriculture with a focus on horticultural crops in Ngawi Regency was developed with a cluster system based on the level of progress, harvest area and by considering agro-climate to map the superior horticultural commodities. The purpose of this study was to map the conditions of horticultural agriculture and analyze problems in the cluster of horticulture plants in Ngawi Regency. The research method is a mixed method using descriptive analysis, Geographic Information System (GIS), and using the Analysis Hierarchy Process (AHP). The conclusion of this study is that the potential development of horticultural clusters in Ngawi Regency requires structuring and developing the location of base commodities in accordance with the conditions of the agro-ecosystem. The development of existing commodities at these base points will make the commodity superior and support the creation of horticultural cluster centers and the development of existing agribusiness in an area. Development of horticulture base commodities for seasonal vegetables and fruits can be adjusted to the LQ results for each sub-district in Ngawi Regency. The results of the Indepth interview processed using AHP obtained results that in fact there were three main factors in the development of clusters, namely production consisting of four derivative factors namely research and development, superior seeds, fertilizers and anti-pest drugs and then marketing with derivative factors namely product standardization, packaging , traditional markets and modern markets. Then the third factor of the institution consists of training, networking, government support and assistance.

From a ‘farm to fork’ perspective, there are several phases in the production chain of fruits and vegetables in which undesired microbial contaminations can attack foodstuff. In managing these diseases, harvest is a crucial point for shifting the intervention criteria. While in preharvest, pest management consists of tailored agricultural practices, in postharvest, the contaminations are treated using specific (bio)technological approaches (physical, chemical, biological). Some issues connect the ‘pre’ and ‘post’, aligning some problems and possible solution. The colonisation of undesired microorganisms in preharvest can affect the postharvest quality, influencing crop production, yield and storage. Postharvest practices can ‘amplify’ the contamination, favouring microbial spread and provoking injures of the product, which can sustain microbial growth. In this context, microbial biocontrol is a biological strategy receiving increasing interest as sustainable innovation. Microbial-based biotools can find application both to control plant diseases and to reduce contaminations on the product, and therefore, can be considered biocontrol solutions in preharvest or in postharvest. Numerous microbial antagonists (fungi, yeasts and bacteria) can be used in the field and during storage, as reported by laboratory and industrial-scale studies. This review aims to examine the main microbial-based tools potentially representing sustainable bioprotective biotechnologies, focusing on the biotools that overtake the boundaries between pre- and postharvest applications protecting quality against microbial decay.

AbstractMacrocycles are unique molecular structures extensively used in the design of catalysts, therapeutics and supramolecular assemblies. Among all reactions reported to date, systems that can produce macrocycles in high yield under high reaction concentrations are rare. Here we report the use of dynamic hindered urea bond (HUB) for the construction of urea macrocycles with very high efficiency. Mixing of equal molar diisocyanate and hindered diamine leads to formation of macrocycles with discrete structures in nearly quantitative yields under high concentration of reactants. The bulky N-tert-butyl plays key roles to facilitate the formation of macrocycles, providing not only the kinetic control due to the formation of the cyclization-promoting cis C = O/tert-butyl conformation, but also possibly the thermodynamic stabilization of macrocycles with weak association interactions. The bulky N-tert-butyl can be readily removed by acid to eliminate the dynamicity of HUB and stabilize the macrocycle structures.

Abstract To cryopreserve cells, it is essential to avoid intracellular ice formation during cooling and warming. One way to achieve this is to convert the water inside the cells into a non-crystalline glass. It is currently believed that to accomplish this vitrification, the cells must be suspended in a very high concentration (20–40%) of a glass-inducing solute, and subsequently cooled very rapidly. Herein, we report that this belief is erroneous with respect to the vitrification of one-cell rat embryos. In the present study, one-cell rat embryos were vitrified with 5 μL of EFS10 (a mixture of 10% ethylene glycol, 27% Ficoll, and 0.45 M sucrose) in cryotubes at a moderate cooling rate, and warmed at various rates. Survival was assessed according to the ability of the cells to develop into blastocysts and to develop to term. When embryos were vitrified at a 2,613 °C/min cooling rate and thawed by adding 1 mL of sucrose solution (0.3 M, 50 °C) at a warming rate of 18,467 °C/min, 58.1 ± 3.5% of the EFS10-vitrified embryos developed into blastocysts, and 50.0 ± 4.7% developed to term. These rates were similar to those of non-treated intact embryos. Using a conventional cryotube, we achieved developmental capabilities in one-cell rat embryos by rapid warming that were comparable to those of intact embryos, even using low concentrations (10%) of cell-permeating cryoprotectant and at low cooling rates.
