Durability of fingerprints in aquatic environment

The aim of the study was to determine the influence of environment of stagnant and flowing water on the durability of fingerprints. The fingerprints immersed in two stagnant water reservoirs and 2 flowing water reservoirs were researched. There were two dependent variables: the contrast between fingerprints ridges and valleys and the contrast between the print and space located beyond it. It was found that fingerprints in stagnant water reservoirs have average longer durability and there is a significant difference in durability within one type of water environment. The contrast between fingerprints ridges and valleys turned out to be the most suitable dependent variable for the research.

Empathy is an important social skill. It is believed to play an essential role in socioemotional and moral development. The current study aimed to explore empathy development during childhood especially among students in the primary and middle schools located in Southern Vietnam. Bryant's Empathy Index for children and adolescents was administrated on 403 children, including 210 boys and 193 girls. The results showed that there was no significant difference between boys and girls in affective empathy. The results further indicated that there is a significant grade difference on affective empathy with the fourth-grade students being placed higher than those of the second and the sixth grades. A separate analysis was conducted for each of the dependent variables. It was found that the fourth graders were significantly higher than the second and the sixth graders on Understanding Feelings, Feelings of Sadness and Bryant's Empathy Index respectively. The result also showed that the Vietnamese version of Bryant's Empathy Index has acceptable reliability and can be used for future research.

A 2 × 3 between-subjects design was used to determine the effects of modelling and aversiveness of a vicarious experience on perceived risk and self-protective behavior. Modelling and aversiveness of experience were manipulated using an instructional videotape. Unprotected model and protected model conditions were compared. Benign, slightly aversive, and highly aversive conditions were compared. The dependent variables were self-protective behavior and perceptions regarding the hazardousness of the product, severity of injury, likelihood of injury, likelihood of an accident, and familiarity with the product. More subjects in the protected model group exhibited self-protective behavior compared to the control group. There was no difference in levels of perceived risk between the two groups. Aversiveness had an effect on self-protective behavior. The slightly aversive group showed an incidence of self-protective behavior significantly greater than that of the control group and the highly aversive group. Examination of the nature of manipulation used in the slightly aversive condition suggests that an ambiguous portrayal of the consequences of a hazard while implying its potential to inflict harm causes people to behave cautiously. The incidence of self-protective behavior in the highly aversive group did not differ significantly from that of the control group despite a significant difference in perceived levels of hazardousness. This is explained as a manifestation of the so-called “self-protective attribution of responsibility.” Perceived hazardousness was found to be the primary predictor of self-protective behavior. Perceived severity and likelihood of injury were found to be the primary predictors of perceived hazardousness. A strong association was found between self-protective behavior and perceived personal susceptibility to injury.

Glass/polyester laminate coated with gelcoat layer of different thickness 0,5; 1,5; 3 mm was studied in terms of blistering behaviour and water sorption in hot water environment. Blistering was found to be accelerated for thin (0,5 mm) gel-coat layer compared to the thick (1,5; 3 mm), however no significant difference in blistering behaviour was observed between the laminates with gel-coat thickness 1,5 and 3 mm which may suggest that increasing the gel-coat thickness is effective only to a certain thickness limit. Microscopic studies demonstrated that blistering behaviour was related to the formation of subsurface cracks – longer and less densely distributed in thin gel-coat layers in contrast to numerous small cracks formed in the thick gel-coats.

In the present research paper, a biosorptive remediation practice for an aqueous medium sample polluted with manganese ions was implemented using the activated coastal waste of the Zostera marina plant. This is the first report in the literature on the utilization of current modified biological waste as a biosorbent substance for the removal of manganese ions from the water environment. The analyses of biosorbent characterization, environmental condition, kinetic, equilibrium, and comparison were performed to introduce the ability of prepared biosorbent for the removal of manganese from the aquatic medium. The biosorbent matter has a rough surface with numerous cavities and cracks and various functional groups for the biosorption of manganese. The environmental conditions significantly affected the manganese purification process, and the optimum working conditions were determined to be biosorbent quantity of 10 mg, pH of 6, manganese concentration of 30 mg L-1, and time of 60 min. The pseudo-second-order model best explained the kinetic data of biosorption operation. The biosorption equilibrium data were best described by the Freundlich isotherm. According to the Langmuir equilibrium model, the maximum purification potency was estimated to be 120.6 mg g-1. The comparison work revealed that the activated coastal waste of the Z. marina plant could be utilized as an effectual and promising biosorbent substance for the remediation of an aquatic environment contaminated with manganese ions.

Selama berabad-abad susu telah dikenal sebagai bahan pangan yang dibutuhkan oleh manusia, karena susu banyak mengandung semua komponen bahan yang diperlukan oleh manusia. Kandungan terbesar susu adalah air dan lemak. Penelitian ini melakukan pengujian kandungan lemak pada susu sapi murni menggunakan gaya sentrifugasi, dengan tujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh variabel berubah, berupa suhu yang digunakan dalam penimpanan susu yaitu 50C, 250C dan 300C, putaran yang digunakan selama percobaan yaitu 1772 rpm, 2080 rpm, 2455 rpm, 3266 rpm, dan 4080 rpm serta waktu yang digunakan yaitu 15 menit, 20 menit dan 25 menit terhadap pemisahan lemak dalam susu sapi murni. Uji analisa pada penelitian ini meliputi uji kandungan lemak, pH, densitas dan viskositas. Pada penelitian tersebut variabel paling optimal yaitu susu pada suhu 300C dengan kecepatan putaran 2455 rpm dan dalam waktu 25 menit mendapatkan hasil kandungan lemak sebesar 2,5ml. Sedangkan hasil pengukuran pH dari ketiga variabel mendapatkan hasil 6,5. Untuk densitas hasil yang didapat yaitu 1,014;1,052; 1,036 masing-masing pada suhu 50C,250C,300C dan untuk viskositas sebesar 1,46. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tidak perbedaan signifikan pengaruh kecepatan putaran sentrifugasi terhadap densitas, pH maupun viskositas. Namun terdapat pengaruh putaran kecepatan sentrifugasi terhadap kadar lemak yang terpisahkan. Semakin tinggi suhu penyimpanan disertai peningkatan kecepatan putaran sentrifugasi, maka semakin tinggi kadar lemak yang terpisahkan.    Fat Content Separation Analysis from Dairy Milk by using Centrifuge For centuries dairy has been well known as the food needed by humans, due to its benefits for growth. The major content of milk is water and fat. This study examined the fat content of pure cow's milk using centrifugation force, with the aim to know the effect of independent variables, such as the temperature used in milk storage (5, 25 and 30 0C), the rotation speed of centrifugation (1772, 2080, 2455, 3266, and 4080 rpm) and the centrifugation time (15, 20 and 25 minutes) against the separation of fat in pure cow's milk. The analysis was including fat content test, pH, density and viscosity. In this study, the most optimum variables of fat content separation from milk (2.5 ml) were found at temperature of 300C with the centrifugation speed of 2455 rpm rotation and within 25 minutes. While, there were no different of the pH (6.5) and viscosity (1.46) regarding to the dependent variables. For the density, the results obtained are 1.014, 1.052; 1,036 for each at 50C, 250C, 300C. The result showed that there were no significant difference in the effect of centrifugation rotation speed to density, pH and viscosity. However, increasing the centrifugation rotation speed increased the fat content. The higher the storage temperature along with the increased speed of the centrifugation cycle, were resulted the higher the separated fat content.

Objective To determine whether statistical differences occur in total cost, length of stay, ICU days, and surgical complications, depending on the volume of laryngectomy procedures performed. Methods Secondary laryngectomy data from 108 hospitals participating in the University Health System Consortium was examined. All laryngectomy surgical cases occurring from July 1, 2001, through June 30, 2005, with an ICD-9 code of 30.3 or 30.4 were analyzed (N=4,551). The cases were divided into 3 categories based on the number of surgical laryngectomy cases performed by hospital. Those volume categories were high, as defined by organizations with 100–233 cases (n=1712); medium, between 60–99 cases (n=1353); and low, between 4–59 cases (n=1458). 4 dependent variables were examined including total cost, length of stay, ICU days, and complications. Results The 4 dependent variables were analyzed for normality by performing a Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. All 4 variables were non-normally distributed. A Kruskal-Wallis test was then performed on each variable to determine if a statistically significant difference appeared between the 3 volume categories. Each variable was found to have statistical significant differences between the groups, with the high volume hospitals having the lowest cost, shortest length of stay, shortest ICU days, and smallest complication rate. Conclusions This study showed that hospitals with higher surgeon volume for total laryngectomies had reduced total cost, length of stay, number of ICU days, and complication rate for their patients.

This study examines the feasibility of using the text presentation method known as Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP) as a means of optimizing reading on small screen interfaces. Participants read text on a hand-held device in both the page-like format and at various presentation rates in RSVP. Reading comprehension, user satisfaction, and format preference were examined as dependent variables. Results showed: (1) there were significant differences in comprehension between the RSVP presented at 250 wpm and the higher speeds of 450 and 650 wpm; but (2) there was no significant difference in comprehension scores between the RSVP at 250 wpm and the page condition. Participants were able to comprehend text presented via RSVP at 250 wpm and the page format equally well. Despite this comparable performance between these formats, participants were generally less satisfied with the RSVP, and preferred 250 and 450 wpm presentation rates significantly more than 650 wpm.

Cognitive control plays a role in human behavior and mental processes, and paranormal beliefs seem to be affected. This study aimed to investigate the role of cognitive control in Paranormal Beliefs using the Go/No-Go Task. Ninety-two people were selected based on low, middle, and high scores in the Revised Paranormal Belief Scale(R-PBS) (Tobacyk, 2004) and were classified into three groups. This produced 30 Severe Paranormal Believers (13 females, mean age 25.3 years), 31 Mild Paranormal Believers (14 females, mean age 26.4 years), and 31 Skeptics (16 females, mean age 25.8 years). All participants were tested on the Go/No Go Task. A multivariate analysis of variance was conducted with the group (Severe Paranormal Believers, Mild Paranormal Believers, and Skeptics) as the independent variable and the Go/No Go subscales scores as dependent variables. The findings show that there is a significant difference between the mean scores in Errors( Go) (F2,89=7.20, p=0.01) , Errors(No- Go) (F2,89=11. 81, p=0.01) and Reaction Time (F2,89=21.46, p=0.01) between the groups. The Severe Paranormal Believers and Mild Paranormal Believers had lower accuracy and slower RT than the Skeptics group. Therefore, Severe Paranormal Believers and Mild Paranormal Believers had a weakness in all Go/No-Go subscale scores. This finding suggests that paranormal beliefs may related to poor cognitive control.

The paper presents the rationale for solving the problem of teaching the basics of applied swimming cadets of educational institutions of the Ministry of internal Affairs. The need for training these skills of cadets is high. Many students in the educational organizations of the Ministry of internal Affairs do not know how to assist and counteract the criminal in the water environment. Despite this, the future police during execution of official duties, the duty to assist, where appropriate, and within the framework of crime prevention, respectively, to the persecution, to oppose and delay in the aquatic environment of the offender. These circumstances determined the need to develop methods of teaching the basics of applied swimming cadets of educational institutions of the Ministry of internal Affairs. It was supposed to carry out the analysis of level of readiness of cadets in questions of knowledge of bases of applied swimming. To develop a program of training students in the basics of applied swimming and test its effectiveness. In the course of the study, pedagogical, practical, mathematical and statistical methods were used. In the course of the study it was found that the proposed program of practical training and methodology for teaching the basics of applied swimming is effective. This is indicated by the experimental data obtained as a result of testing of cadets. This fact allows us to recommend an experimental technique for use in the educational process of students.

Despite the provisions of the Land Use Act (LUA), cap L5 of 2004, to make land available for all stake holders, Federal Government has continuously found it difficult to access land in the states for her developmental projects. Does this influence successful implementation of her building construction projects in south-south Nigeria significantly? To what extent does the State where the project is domiciled influence successful project implementation? In order to provide answers to these questions a survey approach was used in three States (Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa and Cross River), randomly selected with two projects in each State. Structured questionnaire was used to elicit data from screened 179 respondents for the study. Two hypotheses were formulated to guide the research work. The dependent variables studied were land accessibility and successful project implementation while the State where the projects were domiciled was the independent variable. The analytical tools used included simple percentages, one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Least Significant Difference (LSD) test. The hypotheses were tested at .05 level of significance. Findings revealed that State where the projects were domiciled had significant influence on the two dependent variables of land accessibility and successful project implementation and that Cross River State was significantly different from the other States on land accessibility but only on Akwa Ibom State on successful project implementation. The research proffers that for land to be easily accessible for Federal Government projects, Federal Government should enshrine in the Nigerian operating Land Policy the customs, traditions, and beliefs of the locals, take centre stage in all levels of land administration and educate her land administrative personnel in respect of government rights in land matters.
