Program pelatihan dapat meningkatkan pemahaman petugas puskesmas di Kabupaten Sleman terkait anemia defisiensi besi.KATA KUNCI pelatihan; puskesmas; pengetahuan; anemia defisiensi besi ABSTRACT The focus of the Sleman District Health Office in the prevention of anemia is not only on pregnant women anymore as it currently involves young women, long before they become pregnant. The government's step in overcoming anemia with iron supplementation is argued to fail to hit the target. So far the detection of anemia by health center officials is only limited to hemoglobin examination, indicating that the detection of anemia is still general and not specific to iron deficiency anemia. The subjects of this study were community health center staffs including doctors, nutritionists and medical laboratory technology experts who were picked by purposive sampling. The methods used were training with a series of activities: education with pre-test and post-test, case tutorials, and practicum. Paired t-test was performed to compare the difference of value between pre-test and post-test. P-value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. The total participants who took part in the activity were 71 people from the initial target of 75 people (percentage of arrivals = 94.67%). Training related to iron deficiency anemia for health center officers can increase the level of understanding by 32.82 points (p <0,0001). The methods chosen for training activities were considered appropriate with around three-quarters (74,7%) of the participants rated the training method effective or very effective. The training program can improve the understanding of health center staff in Sleman Regency regarding iron deficiency anemia.KEYWORDS training; community health center; knowledge; iron deficiency anemia

The goal of this study was to review published data on iron status among vegetarian adults. Thirteen original articles met the inclusion criteria. Among female vegetarians, the percentage of the sample with ferritin <12 µg/L or <12 ng/mL ranged from 12% to 79%. An inadequate hemoglobin concentration ranged from 6% to 30.3%. Among males, the range of ferritin <12 µg/L across studies was from 1.7% to 29%. The prevalence of hemoglobin below deficiency cutoff ranged from 0% to 15.3%. A higher percentage of vegetarian females, compared to nonvegetarian participants, had ferritin below deficiency cutoff in all but one study (34% vs 0%, 47% vs 42%, 18% vs 13%, 27.8% vs 6.5% among Catholic nuns and 19.4% among college students, 79% Indian, and 56% Caucasian vegetarian vs 27% of nonvegetarian). Serum ferritin was lower in male vegetarians than male nonvegetarians in each study (11% among vegans and 21% among vegetarians compared to 6% and 7% among high and moderate meat consumers, 3% of vegetarians, and 25% vegans vs 0% of nonvegetarians, 29% vs 7%, 9% vs 0%). Vegetarians have a high prevalence of depleted iron stores. A higher proportion of vegetarians, compared to nonvegetarians, had iron deficiency anemia. This is especially true for premenopausal vegetarian women.

Abstract Objective Different studies have reported contradictory results regarding the relationship between iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and febrile seizure (FS). The present study was conducted to determine the effect of IDA on FS in children. Patients and methods This case-control study was conducted among 52 children with FS (the case group) and 18 children with afebrile seizures and 51 children with fever without seizures in the age range of 6 months to 5 years admitted to the pediatric ward of Imam Khomeini Hospital in Ilam from March 2016 to January 2017. Patients were selected using the convenience sampling method. Red blood cell (RBC) count as well as measurement of hemoglobin (Hb), hematocrit (Hct), ferritin, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) levels were performed in all patients. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS16 software. Results A total of 34.6% in the FS group, 66.7% in the afebrile seizure group and 41.2% in the fever without seizure group suffered from IDA, which was not statistically significant between the three groups. Hb, Hct and RBC levels were higher in the case group and MCV, MCH, MCHC levels in the case group were lower than those in the control group. The odds ratio (OR) for FS compared to the febrile group was 0.756 [95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.34–1.68; p = 0.493] and that for FS compared to seizure was 0.265 (95% CI = 0.085–0.823; p = 0.022). Conclusions This study showed that IDA may have protective effects on the onset of FS, and based on the results, IDA is more common in children with afebrile seizures. Further and more comprehensive studies are recommended.
