The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility of x Fe 2 O 3·(100-x)-[ P 2 O 5· CaO ] glasses with 0<x≤50 mol % have been investigated. These data revealed that the valence states and the distribution of iron ions in the glass matrix depend on the Fe 2 O 3 content. For the glasses with x≤1 mol % only Fe 3+ ions are evidenced. In the case of the glasses with 3≤x≤35 mol % both Fe 3+ and Fe 2 ions co-exist in the P 2 O 5· CaO glass matrix, the Fe 2+ ion content is higher than that of the Fe 3+ ions for glasses with x≥10 mol %. For the glasses with x>35 mol %, the evaluated values of the μ eff indicate either the presence of Fe + ions or the coordination influence on the magnetic moment of iron ions, but the presence of small quantities of the antiferromagnetic or ferrimagnetic interactions between iron ions in studied temperature range cannot be excluded. The high temperature susceptibility results indicate that the iron ions are isolated or participate in dipole-dipole interactions for glasses with x≤35 mol % and are antiferromagnetically coupled for higher contents of Fe 2 O 3.

We have prepared a set of polycrystalline samples of La 0.8 Sr 0.2 Co 1 − x Al x O 3 ( 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.2 ), and have measured the magnetization as functions of temperature and magnetic field. We find that the average spin number per Co ion ( S Co ) evaluated from the room-temperature susceptibility is around 1.2–1.3 and independent of x. However, we further find that S Co evaluated from the saturation magnetization at 2 K is around 0.3–0.7, and decreases dramatically with x. This naturally indicates that a significant fraction of the Co 3 + ions experience a spin-state crossover from the intermediate- to low-spin state with decreasing temperature in the Al-substituted samples. This spin-state crossover also explains the resistivity and the thermopower consistently. In particular, we find that the thermopower is anomalously enhanced by the Al substitution, which can be consistently explained in terms of an extended Heikes formula.

Bitumen is used worldwide in the construction of flexible pavements and because of its wide applicability its performance is needed to be improved in all regards like, Chemical, and thermal stability, fatigue life, moisture susceptibility, mechanical strength, temperature susceptibility, rutting resistance, ageing resistance, tensile strength, viscosity, stiffness etc. In this connection, researchers have used various modifiers to improve the pavement performance. The present paper provides a brief review of different modifiers in road making industry. Some popular polymer modifiers like low density polythene, high density polythene, polypropylene, ethyl vinyl acetate, styrene butadiene styrene and industrial waste are reviewed in terms of their role in bitumen modification. It also discusses enhancement in properties of bitumen after modification in order to improve properties of pavement. Through the reviewed literature, it is found that the addition of the polymers to bitumen tends to enhance fatigue and cracking resistance mainly. The future development and recommendation in modifiers for bitumen modification are also suggested in the end.
