This article reports on the experiences of 26 first year students as they record on Facebook snapshots of their experiences navigating social integration into university. There is still a substantial gap in student transition success research conceptually framed by the understanding that first year transition is about becoming. Transition as becoming expands current conceptions of transition by situating it within the real world rather than just within university. Facebook status updates were used as data because social media are integral to the life experiences of the young people and is a means to hypothesise where and how students were becoming university students. This article reports findings that acknowledge the tumultuous, cyclical, and chaotic experiences of first year students consistent with the idea that university is a part of a person’s becoming.

The idea of social integration and integration education is a great challenge not only for the Polish education system, but also for theoretical analyzes and systemic practical solutions aimed at building an integrated society. In relation to people with disabilities is not only an exemplification of the provisions contained in the “Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities” (UN, 2006). It also concerns the change in the social vision of the accessibility of these people to structures existing in contemporary, disability-opening civilized society. However, as demonstrated by the results of research reported in the article, there is still a lot to be done by implementing the postulates created by the ideas of integrating people regardless of their diversity, otherness, physical, mental, and social difference.

Does holding citizenship matter? Do countries reap benefits or face disadvantages from extending citizenship status? A “postnational” or “denationalized” view holds that citizenship’s saliency has decreased with the normative and legal extension of human rights and growth of more local or transnational identities. Others contend that citizenship is just a “hollow promise” of little substantive help to the disadvantaged. Surprisingly, the empirical evidence for citizenship’s significance is thin, in part due to significant data and methodological challenges in identifying effects. Nevertheless, existing research suggests that citizenship status may increase political and civic participation, carry economic benefits, strengthen identification with the national community, and improve social integration. Effects are modest, however, though stronger for non-Western immigrants living in liberal democracies. Moving forward, researchers must investigate not just whether citizenship matters, but for whom, in what contexts, and why. The chapter elaborates six possible mechanisms linking citizenship status to life experiences.
