Introduction: Studies show that blood lead level (BLL) is higher in hemodialysis patients than in healthy people. Lead can disrupt iron metabolism and hemoglobin synthesis and therefore it is regarded as a cause of anemia. Objectives: This study investigated the relationship between BLL and anemia in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) undergoing maintenance hemodialysis Patients and Methods: This case-control study was conducted on 70 patients who had received hemodialysis at least for three months. The participants were selected randomly among eligible patients considering the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Based on their hemoglobin levels, the participants were divided into two groups, namely patients with anemia (case) and those without anemia (control). Results: The mean age of the participants in the case and control groups were 63.8±11.02 and 55.4±13.34 years, respectively. There were significant differences between two groups regarding hemoglobin, C-reactive protein (CRP) and erythropoietin (EPo) levels (P < 0.05). There was a significant correlation between hemoglobin and ferritin levels in the case group and between the length of dialysis and serum iron level in the control group without anemia (P < 0.001). Conclusion: Our results showed no correlation between BLL and anemia, however the BLL was higher in those undergoing long-term maintenance hemodialysis. Our findings require further investigation with larger studies.

Abstract Background and Aims Around worldwide population, 10% are affected by chronic kidney diseases (CKD); hemodialysis is the common choice of renal replacement therapy. Cigarette smokers have higher Lead level than non-smoker population. As Tobacco leaves are grown on polluted soil, it is proven that Mercury poisoning depends on dose and duration of exposure. Aim of the study was to determine two important toxic heavy metals elements Lead and Mercury concentrations in regular hemodialysis patients smoker and non-smoker by comparison with normal subjects and its correlation to anemia. Method Blood samples were collected from CKD patients on maintenance hemodialysis for more than 6 months divided into non-smoker and smoker to be compared with samples from a control group of non-CKD, non-smoker persons. This study was conducted in September 2019 in Al Mokattam Insurance Hospital – Cairo and involved 60 persons of both sex. They were divided into 3 groups: CKD stage 5 patients on hemodialysis 40 patients and sub-divided into 2 groups; (smoker) 20 patients and (non-smoker) 20 patients and the history of eating fish and seafood was taken. The third group was a control group included 20 healthy non-smoker participants. Lead and Mercury were analyzed by electro thermal atomic absorption spectrophotometer in Al Borg central Laboratory. The complete blood count (CBC), kidney function tests and Iron parameters were also detected. Results duration on hemodialysis did not raise Lead or Mercury level in blood, while smoking raises Lead level in blood, and eating fish and sea food more than once per week increased Mercury level in blood. There was a relation between raised Lead level and anaemia in hemodialysis patients. Conclusion Lead Prolonged and Mercury measurement is important in hemodialysis patients with possible symptoms of heavy metal toxicity. Lead level monitoring is recommended in resistant anemia in hemodialysis patients.

<p>Increasing accumulation of lead in body causes serious health problems. Chelation is widely used to decrease lead level in body. This research aims the effectivity of chitosan in chelating lead and their protective ability toward liver and kidney for lead acetate-induced rat. Thirty rats were divided into 6 treatment groups. All groups, except control group, were administered by 175 mgkg<sup>-1</sup> BW lead acetate. Positive control group was treated using EDTA 50 mgkg<sup>-1</sup> BW. Treatment group 1,2, and 3 were treated using chitosan in dose of 64, 32, and 16 mgkg<sup>-1 </sup>BW dissolved in 2% acetic acid, respectively in 30 days. The effectivity of chitosan was compared to blood lead level. ALT and AST level were measured to determine the protective ability of chitosan. Normal function of kidney was assessed using creatinine level. Results showed that blood lead level from all treatment groups, except negative control group, had no significant difference from control group. EDTA and chitosan ability in chelating lead were proven by low level of AST, ALT, and creatinine in treatment groups. This indicated that there was no significant difference from control group. Chitosan capable of chelating lead and protecting kidney and liver from heavy metal. </p><p> </p>

Background: Cholelithiasis is a common abdominal disorder resulting in increasing hospital admissions. About 10-12% of adults develop gallstones. Aim of this study was to find out any association of serum iron and ferritin levels in patients of cholelithiasis. Subjects and Methods: Present study was conducted at the department of surgery, tertiary care institute of for the period 1 year. For the study purpose 70 gall stone cases and 70 normal healthy matched controls were taken as study participants. After explaining about the study to the subjects, an informed consent will be obtained, followed by a detailed history with clinical examination with more emphasis on the parameters given below in outcome variable (ultrasonography finding, serum iron level, serum ferritin level, serum cholesterol). Results: The mean age in the case group (gallstones present) is 43.12 years, as compared to the control group the mean age is 41.05 years, The study shows in the case group 64% of patient was female and 36% was male and in the control group 76% of patient was female and 24% was male. In this study 46 (65.7%) patients with gallstones have the value of serum iron less than normal (normal value: >40 µg/dl). Our study shows, there are 35 female patients with gallstone disease who have serum iron levels below the normal value Most of the patients with gallstone disease whose serum iron levels are subnormal are females. Our study shows that the mean serum iron between cases and control was statistically significant p 0.05. There is no effect of anemia on serum cholesterol. In this study the mean serum cholesterol between cases and control was statistical insignificant (p>0.7)) In the case group, 20 of male and 36 of female patients have normal serum ferritin levels. The number of females having normal serum ferritin levels (in both case and control groups) is more. Conclusion: Gallstones are more prevalent in female population than males. Serum ferritin association is insignificant as it increases other condition with inflammation also. Low serum iron level associated with high risk of cholelithiasis as this may lead to super saturation of bile.

Lead is found in the printing ink, it gets into the human body through skin absorption and ingestion. Blood lead level > 10 μg/dL causes health disturbances. The purpose of this study was analyzed blood lead level and healthy complaints in printing worker of Unipress Surabaya. This research was observational analytic with cross sectional approach. The subject was printing production process employees and administration employees. Population of production process employees were 10 people and administration employees were 7 people. Whereas, sample of production process employees were 9 and administration employees were 6. The determination of the sampling used simple random sampling. Data analyzed with chi-square test and t-independent test. Blood lead level of production process employees have  ± SD = 6.16 ± 0.37 μg/dl, whereas the blood lead level of administration employees have ± SD = 6.0±0.18 μg/dl. Based on the results by t-independent test (p = 0.371) which indicated there was no difference blood lead level of production process employees and administration employees. Based on the test results by chi-square (p = 0.005) which indicated there was difference in central nervous system disturbances of study group and control group. It is concluded that blood lead level in printing worker of Unipress Surabaya are normal. Though it can suggested to use gloves while working, increase hygiene and sanitation behavior, reducing smoking habit, as well as routine health check up to see the blood lead leve

There are no common recommendations regarding electrocardiographic monitoring in occupationally exposed workers. Therefore, the present study was designed to investigate whether exposure to lead results in an increase of selected electrocardiography (ECG) pathologies, such as QT interval prolongation and repolarization disorders, in occupationally exposed workers. The study group included 180 workers occupationally exposed to lead compounds. The exposed group was divided according to the median of the mean blood lead level (PbBmean) calculated based on a series of measurements performed during 5-year observation period (35 µg/dl) into two subgroups: low exposure (LE, PbBmean = 20.0–35.0 µg/dl) and high exposure (HE, PbBmean = 35.1–46.4 µg/dl). The control group consisted of 69 healthy workers without occupational exposure to lead. ECG evaluation included the analysis of heart rate (HR), QT interval and repolarization abnormalities. Mean QT interval was significantly greater in the exposed population than in the control group by 2%. In the HE group, mean QT interval was significantly greater than in the control group by 4% and significantly different from those noted in the LE group. Positive correlations between QT interval and lead exposure indices were also reported. Besides, there was a negative correlation between HR and blood lead level. Increased concentration of lead in the blood above 35 μg/dl is associated with the QT interval prolongation, which may trigger arrhythmias when combined with other abnormalities, such as long QT syndrome. Therefore, electrocardiographic evaluation should be a part of a routine monitoring of occupationally exposed populations.

Представлены результаты изучения влияния растительных адаптогенов на основе облепихи крушиновидной, боярышника обыкновенного, рябины обыкновенной и каштана конского на уровень железа при его дефиците, оксидантно-антиоксидантный статус и молочную продуктивность коров, содержащихся в условиях промышленного комплекса. Были сформированы 5 групп животных по 10 голов. Животные I (контрольной) группы получали основной рацион (ОР) II ОР измельченные семена каштана конского 50 г на 1 голову в сутки III ОР измельченные семена каштана конского 30 г высушенные плоды рябины обыкновенной 20 г на 1 голову в сутки IV ОР цельнозамороженные плоды облепихи крушиновидной 200 г на 1 голову в сутки V ОР цельнозамороженные плоды облепихи крушиновидной 130 г высушенные плоды боярышника обыкновенного 40 г на 1 голову в сутки. В опытных группах II, III, IV и V обнаружено увеличение содержания железа в сыворотке крови к 20-му дню эксперимента на 87, 78, 41 и 58, соответственно. Наблюдалось постепенное снижение уровня свободно-радикального окисления к 30-му дню опыта у коров этих групп. Уровень малонового диальдегида (МДА) снизился на 37,5, 13,4, 20 и 20, соответственно. Увеличение среднесуточного удоя отмечено у коров, получавших комплекс растительных средств из семян каштана плодов рябины (на 7,4) и плодов облепихи плодов боярышника (на 7,5).The resalts of impact studies of plant-based adaptogens (sea-buckthorn, hawthorn, mountain ash and chestnut) on serum iron level in cows, oxidative-antioxidant status and milk production of cattle contained in the industrial complex were shown. 5 groups were formed with 10 animals each: 1st control group (I) - animals received the main diet (MD) 2nd group (II) - MD chestnut seeds (50 g per 1 animal) 3rd group (III) - MD chestnut seeds/ mountain ash (30 g/20 g per 1 animal) 4th group (IV) - MD sea-buckthorn fruits (200 g per 1 animal) 5th group (V) - MD sea-buckthorn fruits/ hawthorn fruits (130 g /40 g per 1 animal). In experimental groups II, III, IV и V, an increase in the content of iron in blood serum by the 20th day of the experiment by 87, 78, 41, 58, respectively, was shown. There was also a gradual decrease in the free radical oxidation level by the 30th day of the experiment in cows of experimental groups II, III, IV и V, the malondialdehyde level (MDA) decreased by 37.5, 13.4, 20, 20 respectively compared to the initial values. The highest average daily milk production was observed in cows receiving a complex of herbal remedies from chestnut seeds mountain ash fruits (an increase by 7.4) and sea-buckthorn fruits hawthorn fruits (an increase by 7.5).

AbstractLead is a heavy metal without a biological role. High level of lead exposure is known to be associated with hypertension, but the risk at low levels of exposure is uncertain. In this study, data from US NHANES 1999–2016 were analyzed. Adults with blood lead and blood pressure measurements, or self-reported hypertension diagnosis, were included. If not already diagnosed, hypertension was defined according to the AHA/ACC 2017 hypertension guideline. Results were analyzed using R statistics version 3.5.1 with sample weight adjustment. Logistic regression was used to study the association between blood lead level and hypertension. Odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) were estimated. Altogether, 39,477 participants were included. Every doubling in blood lead level was associated with hypertension (OR [95%CI] 1.45 [1.40–1.50]), which remained significant after adjusting for demographics. Using quartile 1 as reference, higher blood lead levels were associated with increased adjusted odds of hypertension (Quartile 4 vs. Quartile 1: 1.22 [1.09–1.36]; Quartile 3 vs. Quartile 1: 1.15 [1.04–1.28]; Quartile 2 vs. Quartile 1: 1.14 [1.05–1.25]). In conclusion, blood lead level is associated with hypertension in the general population with blood lead levels below 5 µg/dL. Our findings suggest that reducing present levels of environmental lead exposure may bring cardiovascular benefits by reducing blood pressure.
