Currently there are many methods of treatment with modern medicine and traditional medicine. Objectives: To investigate some clinical and paraclinical characteristics of sciatica due to herniated disc without surgery and to evaluate the effects of electronic acupuncture combined of with “Than thong truc u thang” remedy in the treatment of sciatica due to lumbar disc herniation. Methods: The sample is 27 patients diagnosed sciatica due to lumbar disc herniation. We examined and treated at Traditional Medicine Department of Hue Central Hospital. A prospective study, assess the results before and after the treatment. Results: Good level occupied 44.4%; fair good level occupied 37.0%; averge good level occupied 18.5%. Conclusion: This combination is effective treatment for sciatica due to lumbar disc herniation. Key words: Sciatica, lumbar disc herniation, electronic – acupuncture, “Than thong truc u thang” remedy

Introduction: Surgical wound infection in developing coutries is about 3%. Antibiotics prophylaxis may help to reduce the surgical site infection. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of antibiotics prophylaxis in patients with lumbar disc herniation who were treated with lumbar discectomy at Hue University hospital. Materials and Methods: A prospective study was conducted at Hue University hospital from March 2015 to May 2018 on 54 patients with lumbar disc herniation who were used antibiotics prophylaxis when undergoing discectomy. Results: The infection rate in our study was 0%. Antibiotics prophylaxis reduced the length of hospitalization as well as the medical cost. Conclusion: Antibiotics prophylaxis was effective in preventing surgical site infection despite the fact that the condition of operating rooms did not meet the standard rules. Key words: prophylaxis antibiotics, lumbar disc herniation

Background: During the last few decades the prevalence of lumbar disc herniation has been increasing constantly, thereby imposing a significant socioeconomic burden. Physiotherapy plays a crucial role in both surgical and conservative treatment of lumbar disc herniation, consequently the current COVID-19 pandemic with concomitant lockdowns has led to a shortage of physiotherapeutical care. In the light of these recent events publicly available physiotherapy tutorials may be a useful tool to address this problem. Aim: The main aim of this study was to assess the quality of online physiotherapy exercise tutorials for lumbar disc herniation. Materials & Methods: With YouTube being a widely known and used platform we screened 240 of the most viewed videos. A total of 76 videos met the inclusion criteria and were statistically analyzed. The videos were assessed using Global Quality Score, DISCERN Score and JAMA benchmark criteria and in regard to their applicability. Results: They displayed a wide range of views (44,969 to 5,448,717), likes (66 to 155,079) and dislikes (6 to 2339). The videos were assessed using Global Quality Score, DISCERN Score and JAMA benchmark criteria and in regard to their applicability. Neither the number of “Views”, “Likes”, nor “Dislikes” was found to have a significant association with any of the quality measures used in this study. Conclusion: Overall quality grade was determined as “moderate”. Based on the data examined in this study, the use of YouTube videos as a source of therapy advice for lumbar spine disc herniation cannot be recommended universally.

The anaerobic skin commensalPropionibacterium acnesis an underestimated cause of human infections and clinical conditions. Previous studies have suggested a role for the bacterium in lumbar disc herniation and infection. To further investigate this, five biopsy samples were surgically excised from each of 64 patients with lumbar disc herniation.P. acnesand other bacteria were detected by anaerobic culture, followed by biochemical and PCR-based identification. In total, 24/64 (38%) patients had evidence ofP. acnesin their excised herniated disc tissue. UsingrecAand mAb typing methods, 52% of the isolates were type II (50% of culture-positive patients), while type IA strains accounted for 28% of isolates (42% patients). Type III (11% isolates; 21% patients) and type IB strains (9% isolates; 17% patients) were detected less frequently. The MIC values for all isolates were lowest for amoxicillin, ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, rifampicin, tetracycline, and vancomycin (≤1mg/L). The MIC for fusidic acid was 1-2 mg/L. The MIC for trimethoprim and gentamicin was 2 to ≥4 mg/L. The demonstration that type II and III strains, which are not frequently recovered from skin, predominated within our isolate collection (63%) suggests that the role ofP. acnesin lumbar disc herniation should not be readily dismissed.

A clinical study was conducted in 72 lumbar disc herniation (LDH) patients and 40 asymptomatic subjects to evaluate the efficacy of Feng's spinal manipulation (FSM). FSM was performed twice a week for less than 20 days. Changes in the symmetrical index of spinal column (SISC) and quantified symptom index (QSI) before and after FSM in both groups were collected. The QSI consisted of the visual analogue scale (VAS), score of the Japanese Orthopedic Association, and straight leg raising test, for measurement of pain perception, dysfunction of lower limb extension or flexion, and symptomatic relief. A correlation analysis was conducted to compare the difference in protruded nucleus pulposus size using computerized projection grating profilometry, SISC, and QSI before and after the therapy. The results showed that the SISC and QSI significantly decreased after treatment in the LDH group (p < 0.01). The SISC before and after treatment was closely correlated with the improvement of QSI, although there was no change in protruded nucleus pulposus following the therapy. Among the five components in SISC, the LR was found to be an ideal indicator for evaluation of the real circumstances in LDH patients. Our data suggested that FSM achieved satisfactory therapeutic effects in relieving the symptom of LDH while no effects were observed in asymptomatic subjects.
